CINCINNATI - A charter school near Cincinnati will start paying its students on Monday for showing up to class and being productive throughout the day.

Students at Dohm Community High School who are on time everyday, avoid trouble and show they're working in class will get a Visa gift card at the end of each week.

Seniors will be paid $25 and underclassmen will get $10. An extra $5 will be put in a savings account they can redeem after they graduate.

The school's principal Ramone Davenport said that the goal of the new incentives is to reduce dropouts, improve attendance and keep students off the street.

Damn. Really?

'Bout damn time.
Giving High School kids an extra $25 each week?

I'll make the leap and assume that Cincinnati school districts are having the same troubles as pretty much everywhere else: money. Schools are always asking for more money. Money for teachers, supplies, operating costs, athletics.. who knows what all they do with this money.

Pre-submit edit: I went into a paragraph with operating costs and whether it was worth it. But it's in the article:

An anonymous donor offered $10,000 and Easter Seals Work Resource Center said that they would match that amount.

The program will cost about $40,000 this school year, but Principal Davenport said that it's worth it if it means students will graduate.

If the program proves successful, Easter Seals said that it could receive a grant that could extend the program through next year.

I can see the school districts in my area starting this, and asking the taxpayers to fund it. Great.
