Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

It is very frustrating to have to be around Eagles fans all day as that teams stays busy. Meanwhile, all I can come back with is that the Bengals will...............um.........let's see.............Oh yeah, match the 15 million dollar deal for their #4 wideout.

Over/Under on Dalton's first pick-six of the season? I say third quarter of game 1.

Last I heard we weren't matching Hawkins? I think it would be ludicrous to pay him that much. Let him go to Cleveland and draft someone like Cooks in the 2nd or get Ellington in rounds 3 or 4. I am more than ok with Green and Jones on the edge, with Sanu rotating in, but it would be nice to have a true slot guy.

As for the offseason...I'm only keeping my eye on the free agency market to see who we lose...Collins and Johnson were not fun to watch leave but there is no way we could pay them and I think we will be fine at those positions if we stay healthy (BIG if). Still, we will need to take an OL or two at some point in the draft now with Cook and Collins gone. Would like to see us get Linsley later on in rounds 5-7 to bulk up the interior.

Definitely not excited about Dalton but since they are hell-bent on him being the starter, I say no way in hell we take a QB. I already think Johnson is a good backup and we don't need a backup. My draft analysis remains the same mostly...first round I would be fine with a safety, offensive lineman, corner, or linebacker. Depends on who is there...Shazier may be available late first and perhaps Mosley but no other LBs will be worth a 1st rounder (Mack and Barr will be gone by then). Plus I wouldn't mind waiting until the 2nd or 3rd round for Borland or Skov. Corner is pretty deep this year with many borderline first rounders available late. I like our corners in Hall, Newman, Pacman, and Kirkpatrick is coming along. But we are aging there, Hall's health is questionable, you never know when Pacman could get suspended, and Kirkpatrick is far from proven, plus we just lost Ghee. The more I think about it, corner might make sense...I thought Iloka came along nice last year to compliment Nelson at safety. And as for offensive line, I would not mind seeing us draft Yankey...that would make for a killer guard combo with Yankey-Zeitler.

Marvin Lewis signs 1-year extension

Marvin Lewis has been with Cincinnati since 2003, the longest tenure of any coach other than Bill Belichick, who was hired by New England in 2000.
His previous contract, renewed after the 2010 season, was set to expire after 2014.

Two things: 1) I guess we have until Tuesday to match Hawkins' offer sheet, so no firm decision yet; and 2) We signed Dontay Moch off waivers from Arizona...hooray, we got the guy who we drafted years back who was on our IR his entire time here!

shefter originally tweeted that the bengals would match hawkins, but apparently the browns frontloaded the first two years of the deal, and since cinci has so many extensions to deal with for 2015, they don't want a $5 million cap hit for hawkins, so they won't match. so, i wouldn't be expecting much from cinci in free agency. what i don't get is why they didn't slap a 2nd round tender on either hawkins or vincent rey. the cost isn't that much higher (about $500k?) and it would basically eliminate any chance of them getting poached like cleveland apparently is doing.

Agreed. Even with the free agency hits, I still think we almost have the right pieces as long as we add depth on the OL and secondary, and have a productive draft. Of course all right pieces didn't seem to work last year for Dalton & Lewis.

The Bengals might be moving too slowly for some tastes on other contract fronts, but they’re working to keep their strength strong.

According to Geoff Hobson of the team’s official website, the Bengals have reached a two-year contract extension with defensive tackle Domata Peko.

That will keep Peko under contract through 2016, as he was entering the final year of his deal, at $3.965 million.

So we pick up Jason Campell at QB(:smash:) and Marshall Newhouse at tackle...love the Newhouse pickup (former starting left tackle for the Packers) though. Gives depth at tackle and he can play inside too, which means drafting an OL high is no longer necessary. Plenty young too.

I would for sure. I think we absolutely go defense with out first pick after getting Newhouse at tackle. I would prefer a safety but only if one of Clinton-Dix or Pryor is available (only two worth it at #24 imo). If not, I think Nelson is solid and Iloka really looked promising last year, plus Mays gives some depth. I would like Shazier because we could certainly use someone with his coverage skills and sideline-to-sideline speed to go along with Burfict and Mauluga. That would really make our front 7 extremely strong and gives us an additional pass rusher, in addition to an every down backer.

I wouldn't mind Roby because I think his struggles this year had way more to do with coaching (which won't be an issue in the NFL) and I know he has the talent. There is no guarantee Hall rehabs well and he is appearing more and more injury prone. Newman had a great season but has to be aging. Adam Jones is great but also getting older and you never know what he will do next off the field. Ghee, who didn't play a whole lot but provided depth and promise, got traded. Kirkpatrick showed some promise but is far from a sure thing. I think we have alot of talent at corner but even more question marks. We have had a bunch of issues with injuries recently at the position and adding young talent would be huge.

Bengals signed former Texans strong safety Danieal Manning to a 1 year contract today. Good pickup at a position of need and he could potentially get the start over Iloka. At the very least, he gives us good depth there and potentially changes my mind about taking a safety with the first pick. He had injury issues in Houston but hopefully he can stay healthy here.

The more I think about it, I would love to see us take Shazier if he is available. Shazier at WILL, Burfict at SAM, and Mauluga at MIKE would make a great LB corp behind a great DL. I also would not mind see us taking a corner with the first pick considering all the question marks I mentioned above. Shazier is still my first choice though.
