Cincinnati Bengals 2014 Thread of Frustration

I was going to do some elaborate review but I can sum it up quick: We are good at everything. I really like this team because of the balance...even when we won in the past, I felt we were on the brink of busting every game. I hope nobody in this club gets complacent, but I feel extremely comfortable with this team. If something falters, we have a backup. There is depth all over and very good coaching. We will hit a stretch of difficulties because this is the NFL, but I think there is talent that will find longevity here. There are so many veterans that are still playing high quality football. And there are so many young guys (I am looking at you Bernard, Hill, Hunt, etc.) that provide thunder.

I know this was just Tennessee but in the NFL, there is no easy win and we beat them like we should have...pure dominance. The Bengals of yore would have let the Titans back in it come 4th quarter and we would have limped to a win. Now we march through and do our business. For the first time in my life, I actually feel confident in this Bengals club.

Thought this was interesting: The OL still has not given up a sack...both the Titans and Ravens had good DLs with a pro-bowl DT against our rookie center in Bodine. Then you consider Zeitler was out...Pollak came in and had the highest grade, along with Bodine, against a pro bowl DT in Casey. Obviously we can't have many more injuries there but Pollak has proven again and again he is vital depth inside for us at center and guard.

Also, in reviewing the game, Iloka is playing his ass off...if he keeps this up, he is looking at the Pro Bowl.

I am watching the Atlanta-Minnesota game and I am laughing at how much they keep bringing up the Week 2 game against us....they keep saying "that awful game against the Bengals." Did it ever occur to these announcers that maybe our defense is just bad-ass? Because they are.

Looking like Burfict, Marvin Jones, Zeitler, and Brandon Thompson are all out for Sunday...shit. I still like us but NE is going to play pissed off at home after their performance last week and Dalton plays awful in primetime. The Pats can't stop the run this year, which would bode well for us but my guess is they will force us to throw the ball...I just hope with Jones and Eifert out we have enough weapons to bring them out of the box. Really hoping we get a couple of those guys back this week, this is a big game.

Edit: How sneaky would it be if we do not practice Jones all week and then feature him Sunday night? (maybe Burfict?) Likely wishful thinking though, the NFL does not usually work that way.

My thoughts:

  • Brandon Tate needs to be cut. I get it, fumbles happen, but the bigger issue is the continuous terrible decision making to bring the ball out when he catches it 7 yards into the end zone. He did it multiple times last night, but the one that stood out the most to me as WTF ARE YOU DOING was the one right at the end of the first half. 1:08 on the clock, Bengals need to drive to get some momentum, catches it 7 yards deep and instead of kneeling on it to save field position AND time, he brings it out and gets tackled at the 12. Not his fault AJ Green fumbled, but still a terrible decision. Some of that is also on the ST coaches but Tate brings nothing to the team besides terrible returning.
  • Andy Dalton had one of his best games as a pro in my opinion. He missed Gio early on a wheel route that would have been a touchdown, but for the most part was fitting the ball into really tight windows consistently. His throw to Sanu down the seam which Sanu dropped, his TD to AJ on the back shoulder, his floater to Gio where he dropped it right over the linebacker whose head wasn't turned were all truly excellent throws. If anyone else had bothered showing up to play this might have been a really good game.
  • Jermaine Gresham... when the announcers reminded us that we took Gresham over Graham and Gronk in the same draft, I wanted to go play in traffic. Biggest play of the game by far was the dropped TD in the end zone. No excuse for that whatsoever. Just an atrocious play that really turned the momentum.
  • In general no one wanted to help out Andy Dalton. AJ's fumble, Sanu's drops, Gresham's atrocious drop, Dane's fumble, if our WR had come to play, with as well as Andy was spinning it, who knows maybe we even overcome the defense.
  1. DL has looked ok, was especially worried about Gilberry because Johnson was such an underrated run-stopper and Gilberry wasn't great last year, but he is playing reasonably well. Still disappointed in the lack of production from Hunt but he's still a little raw and has some time. Geno doesn't have it yet but goodness when he does, I don't know how you attack this defense if Burfict is healthy. All of that being said, we have to figure out how to get some pressure on the quarterback. Geno's return to form will help certainly but need someone else to step up there IMO.
  • I mean FFS Tom Brady had pressure on maybe 2 of his throws all night. An OL that got obliterated by KC just stonewalled us all day in the passing game and demolished us in the run game. Geno is clearly not anywhere near 100% yet, which is to be expected, but we have NOTHING else in terms of generating pressure. Turns out you can't give a guy who has 50,000 career passing yards all day to throw and expect to be successful. This to me is the scariest thing because there's just no way this improves at all this year except Geno or Guenther dialing up some more creative ways to get pressure, which as bad as our LBs were in coverage yesterday doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence.
  • Clearly missed Burfict last night to an absurd degree, all those stretch plays they ran where Ridley gets the corner don't happen with Burfict blowing up the middle and keeping the CBs clean.
  • I don't know if the rest of our LBs can ever recover from this game. Hopefully. Just fucking torched up the seam repeatedly. Not that our CBs or Safeties were any better.
  • Coaches have to have the team ready to play. We came out in primetime and looked lost, especially on defense. They were obviously super fired up and I don't know if we could match that intensity but at least look like you knew there was a game on Sunday. Offense's issues getting set were a bit concerning but we likely won't play in a more amped environment all year and communication issues in our first intense road game are to be expected so I'm not too concerned about that.
Ultimately, it's one game (and the same thing happened to the Patriots last week and now no one is worried about them at all now). Panthers next week looks scarier after our inability to cover TEs but they'll be starting Darrin Reaves at RB so hopefully that relieves some pressure on the DL. Assuming we get Burfict back next week, I can still see us going into the Week 16 game against the Broncos at 11-3, which at least puts us in play for home field in the AFC.

Your thoughts mirror mine, especially Tate...I have wanted him cut for a very long time. He is an awful returner that just dances around and gains 2-3 yards. And that is aside from the idiotic decisions to bring those kicks out last night and the fumble. He adds nothing to this team. But when it rains, it pours...everything that could go wrong went wrong and we just were not going to win that game. We clearly missed Burfict without doubt and he has to be healthy for us down the road or this defense will be average at best. We also will benefit greatly when we return Jones and Eifert in the passing game, plus Zeitler back at guard. Agreed 100% on Dalton though...everyone is going to point to his 2-5 primetime record but this one can in no way be pinned on him. He was literally the only player that showed up for us last night.

End of the day though, it counts as one loss. We'll finally be healthy for the most part by the time we host Carolina next week and hit a stretch of very winnable games. As long as they use this as motivation and don't fall into a drought, I think they'll be fine.

Just got an alert - AJ Green carted off the practice field.

Re-aggravated his toe injury...my guess is we are going to be forced to sit him 2-3 weeks and not re-risk an injury, hopefully I am wrong. Then you look at the practice report and Marvin Jones was a no-show and Eifert is out at least until Week 9, and you realize Dalton basically has no weapons left to throw to aside from Sanu and Gio. It is frustrating that by far the toughest stretch of our schedule will be presumably our least healthy...Green, Jones, Burfict, Eifert, Zeitler, Thompson, etc. are essentially the core of our team and the majority of them have been out/will be out through New England, Carolina, Indianapolis, and Baltimore...we might be lucky to escape 2-2 through that stretch. Then we look to finally be healthy, only to face the likes of the Jaguars, Browns, Texans and Buccaneers. Only positives are that Burfict and Zeitler will be back this week and are likely to be full-go.

Nugent needs to be on the chopping block as well.

Not sure about that yet. He had one awful game this year, sure...possibly an outlier though. In his previous 4 years, he averaged over 80% (82.5) and hit some big FGs along the way. Tate should be on the chopping block because he has always sucked and contributed nothing but 3-4 yard punt returns where he jukes East and West, yet gets nothing...then after Sunday night he just solidified why he should have been long gone. He is a non-factor at WR and does nothing for us in the return game. Sanz is a better overall player and likely a better kick returner and Pacman is clearly the better punt returner...no need for Tate anymore. Nugent has a reliable record here though, so I am willing to wait to see if he is past his prime yet. He's earned the benefit of the doubt so far.
