Just sayin': Yeah, I agree, he is a"selfish douche". I believe that when he accepted the "full ride" scholarship to Stanford (which is probably worth a couple hundred thousand dollars) he (at least de facto) agreed to see the season through.

The next step is for the star players to stop playing after their team is mathematically eliminated from the conference championship. Stanford finished 2 games behind Washington, so basically the game against Cal and (non conference game) against Rice were meaningless games too, etc.

However, not necessarily career ending yet; the example they are throwing around is Jaylon Smith.

i think it's a bit harsh to call him or fournette quitters. first, they're running backs. given that they face extreme contact nearly each time they carry the ball, they are prone to injuries. second, they've been injured this season. they are more likely to be re-injured. third, at least in mccaffrey's case, the sun bowl is a glorified exhibition game. nothing more. it's not a playoff game and it's not a ny6 game. he's not going to raise his draft stock by facing north carolina.

if mccaffrey is going to be compared to previous players who competed in their bowl games, then at least compare him to previous 1st/2nd round draft picks who are coming off of injuries.

That's in fact what they are doing - quitting. They aren't retiring. They aren't being sat down, suspended, or removed. They are indeed quitting before the season is complete. imagine if a university decided to not give him the last semester of college so they could save the money.

Or imagine if he was dinged up, could play, but his NFL team held him out an extra week so he could get a little bit healthier before hitting the grind again.

Since no fans are getting hit, paying their bills or risking their injuries, I think it's selfish for any fans to chime in and pass judgment on kids who choose not to play in glorified exhibition game to risk further injury. Jaylon Smith is the most high profiled name, and there could be more if the kids continue to play in games that in the end only benefit the big name sponsors and their schools names. I doubt their teammates would look at them as quitters, as the only reason that people honestly watched Stanford and LSU were because of McCaffery and Fournette.

say ohio state goes 8-4 next year. the bowl game would be underwhelming, obviously. coombs gets offered a job as head coach at a decent program (for a substantial pay increase) and accepts. if he chooses to leave before the lackluster bowl game, would you guys call him a "selfish douche" and a "quitter"?

No and I don't have a problem with what McCaffrey is doing because he finished the regular season out, played all other bowl games every other year and now has one meaningless game left between him and a nice paycheck. It isn't my place to bash him over this decision that he has made. His decision wasn't to hit a woman or do drugs or rob a liquor store. It is a decision with his future in mind...the opposite of most decisions that players make that I would possibly bash them for. I remember when Jadaveon Clowney contemplated sitting out his entire junior season to avoid the risk of injury. I don't know what the BP take on that was but I know that nationally, it was met more with intrigue than it was with people bashing him for it. I could be wrong.

As far as the comparison to Coach Coombs. I don't necessarily see a valid comparison. McCaffrey is risking injury and could see a drastic decrease in his first NFL contract by getting hurt. Coombs wouldn't be risking as much by choosing to finish out the season coaching for Ohio State. That isn't to say that there isn't still risk on Coombs' part. The longer he waits to join his new team, the less time he spends recruiting for his new team before the signing period, which in the long run, could impact his teams record a couple years down the line if he misses out on some key players. I would still have no problem if Coombs accepted a job and wanted to get started right away.

Then why can't the bowls take out insurance on the kids who will play in their games, which, let's face it, most are set up to provide money for the tourist industry?

Brian Kelly is a shit-bag mother fucking douche bag whether he stayed to coach Ohio's BCS team in a BCS bowl or not. He was already a head coach though. Coombs would be leaving a job as a position coach for his chance to be THE coach in this hypothetical. Coombs would be getting an opportunity he has never had at the collegiate level. Kelly left his team for the same position he already had, just with a different school. If a coach accepts a position at another school, then I have no problem with his first and foremost loyalty being that school...unless you're Brian Kelly. If you're Brian Kelly, it doesn't matter what you do. Douche is gon' douche.
