Bears say they reassured Andy Dalton he will start at QB in 2021 despite move up for Justin Fields in draft

The Chicago Bears made one of the headlining moves of the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, sending four draft picks to the New York Giants in order to select quarterback Justin Fields No. 11 overall. But don't ask them to commit to Fields as competition for the starting QB job, let alone Week 1 duties. Addressing reporters Thursday night, general manager Ryan Pace reiterated that veteran Andy Dalton remains the Bears' No. 1 QB entering 2021, and not only that, but said coach Matt Nagy has personally reached out to Dalton to reassure the former Cowboys backup of his starting role.

"Matt has spoken to Andy Dalton tonight," Pace said, per the Chicago Sun-Times. "That communication and clarity for us is really important. Andy is our starter, and we're gonna have a really good plan in place to develop Justin and do what's best for our organization and win games."

Ready or not: Bears' next QB dilemma is when to play Justin Fields

It’s not an overstatement to call quarterback Justin Fields’ arrival in Chicago the city’s most celebrated sports moment since the Cubs won the World Series in 2016.

The Bears -- almost universally panned for their spotty Day 1 draft record over the past decade -- administered a shot of adrenaline to the fan base when they pulled off a draft-night blockbuster trade with the New York Giants in order to move up nine spots and select Fields 11th overall.

Fields is no Mitchell Trubisky, who sat on the bench at North Carolina for years until a very good junior season (the 8-5 Tar Heels lost the Sun Bowl to Stanford in Trubisky’s final collegiate game) convinced the Bears to take him with the second pick in 2017.

Rather, Fields played at Ohio State -- one of the nation’s preeminent college football powerhouses.

In two seasons as the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback, Fields passed for 63 touchdowns with nine interceptions as Ohio State went 20-2, won two Big Ten Championships and made two College Football Playoff appearances. Fields, a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, threw for 385 yards and six touchdowns in a brilliant semifinal performance against Clemson.

The resume checked every box, at least for the Bears.

“It’s the arm talent, it’s the accuracy, it’s the athleticism,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said of Fields. “When you see a guy with that kind of arm talent, with that kind of quarterback makeup that he has, with that kind of work ethic that he has, that’s played in really big games and really big moments and performed in big moments, that’s extremely tough.

Justin Fields Rumors: Bears Won't Sit QB 'Just for Fun or Posterity' to Play Dalton

The Chicago Bears have repeatedly said Andy Dalton is their starting quarterback heading into the 2021 season.

That stance may be changing.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on Get Up on Monday that Fields will have a chance to earn the starting job if he's impressive in camp:

"This offseason the Bears assessed their situation and said, 'Look, we've been an 8-8 team, we just need an upgrade at quarterback that can get us closer to 10 wins.' They felt Andy Dalton did that. They said, 'Hey, we can win 10 games with this guy, he's a slight upgrade at the position.' But then they had the chance at Justin Fields, crazy athlete, great ability. They said, 'OK, this is the long-term play.'

"Now, if Fields is just undeniable over the next three to four months in training camp, they're not going to just sit him just for fun or posterity just to play the veteran. So they're going to give him the best chance, but they're OK sitting Fields if Dalton has a good grasp on the job and they feel like they can win with him. So, they believe they're going to be better regardless. It just depends on whether Fields is ready Week 1."

The Bears signed Dalton to a one-year contract in March to serve as their starter. Their social media team labeled him QB1 in a widely mocked tweet soon after the agreement, and both general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy have said they're sticking by Dalton despite moving up to draft Fields a month later.

"Matt has spoken to Andy Dalton tonight," Pace told reporters last month. "That communication and clarity for us is really important. Andy is our starter, and we're gonna have a really good plan in place to develop Justin and do what's best for our organization and win games."

Chicago Bears could soon be for sale: Owners having internal discussions about maybe selling team, per report

The Chicago Bears have been in the NFL since the league's first year in 1920 and in that time, the team has only been owned by one family, but that could soon be changing.

According to Jim O'Donnell of the Daily Herald in Chicago, there could be a sale coming in the near future and that's because there's some "internal strife going on among family members to sell ... now."

The principal owner of the team is 98-year-old Virginia Halas McCaskey, who is the daughter of Bears founder George Halas. The NFL legend ran the team until his death in 1983 and at that point, Virginia took over as the head of the franchise.

At this point, selling the team would basically serve two purposes. First, it would allow the McCaskey family to cash-in on their investment. The Bears are worth an estimated $3.5 billion and if that's what they end up selling for, it would create a huge profit for the family. To put the team's current value in perspective, just consider this: George Halas only paid $100 for the team in 1920.

Adjusted for inflation, $100 in 1920 is equal to $1,378 in 2021.

https://www.dollartimes.com/inflation/inflation.php?amount=100&year=1920#:~:text=What is $0.1k in 1920 worth in today's money?&text=Adjusted for inflation, $100 in,over this period was 2.63%.

Just sayin': Not a bad return on a $100 investment in 1920. I'd like to go back to 1920 and buy a NFL team, does anyone know how to build a flux capacitor?

Here's proof that the Vikings tried trading up for Justin Fields

Landing former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft was already a sweet victory for Chicago Bears fans across the country, but the fact that they stole him from a division rival makes it that much better.

.
.
Naturally, teams do their best to deny any suggestion that they were looking to move on from their incumbent starter, in this case, Kirk Cousins. But those denials become somewhat complicated when there’s video evidence.

ESPN’s Courtney Cronin reported on May 3 that the Vikings were making an effort to land Fields when the Panthers were on the clock. This video proves it:

And just like that, the Bears already have a 2021 victory in the NFC North.
