Cheap place to purchase Microsoft Office?

If your school doesn't offer it cheap, go thru a college student. Microsoft wants to get students hooked on their products so they sell their software (w/o all of the product marketing) for about 20% of what you would pay at compusa. You usually have to have proof that you are a student so you have to get a student to buy it from the campus computer store.

i use ms office all the time at work becuase everyone else does too, but i prefer openoffice.org and use that at home. open office is basically a clone of ms office and it is totally free.

http://www.openoffice.org/

sun microsystems made most of this as a big fuck you to microsoft mostly. it works really well, is stable, and all my open office org documents open all ms office products and i can save open office documents with ms office file extensions and open them in ms office with no problems at all at work.

Thump, you can get this discount as a teacher, too. My mom's a school counselor and just bought it pretty cheaply. I think the discount rate is around $150.

Is that what you did?

The current version I have on my old computer is a pirated one but the guy who put in on my computer kept the installation CD and lives out of town so that's not an option.

I would just go with Open Office until you can find a pirated copy. My office moved to open office for a while and we didn't have any problems. It has word, excel, and powerpoint that all work the same as MS office.

Thump,

Since your wife works at OSU, you may want to have her check if she is eligible for a discount. I never looked myself when I worked at OSU, but I was able to get Windows XP, MS Office and Front Page for $100 from the bookstore in Central Classrooms when I was a grad student . There might be a similar discount for employes.

As a MS business partner I am shocked!:wink2:
Actually you could spend the rest of your life trying to get a P2P copy to work as MS will blacklist the frequently used serial numbers. They are also going to prevent you from upgrading/updating unless you have a legit copy.

If you are a teacher you should be able to get an educational copy cheap.

If you have more than one computer and want a complete set of MS software you may want to consider the MAPS program.

You have to indicate you are a business partner and you intend to develop on the software. It is around $300-$400 per year but you get multiple licenses of WinXP, office, project, visio and media center I believe. Now if you stop paying the $300-$400 a year you are supposed to stop using the software. I do not know how stringently they enforce that.

Open Office is OK, as a teacher it should not be a problem but in business there are compatibility issues.

In the long run you are better just to get an education version.
