CG John “Juni” Mobley, Jr. (Official Thread)

John Mobley Jr. Already Eager to Get to Work for Better Close to Next Season for Ohio State Basketball

“It's definitely fuel to the fire, and it's going to be motivation for me every day for the summer coming up and the work I'm ready to put in to make sure we get back in this position and go further next time,” Mobley said.

Ohio State is looking to the future much faster than it wanted after making its first NCAA Tournament in four years. But with Bruce Thornton off to start his professional career after setting the school’s all-time scoring record, Mobley will be the most seasoned returning guard heading into 2026-27 for the Buckeyes. And he’s already motivated to make that year a better one.

John Mobley Jr. Declares for NBA Draft While Maintaining Eligibility, Will Return to Ohio State If He Remains in College

It's either the NBA or back to Ohio State for the Buckeyes' sharpshooter and second-leading scorer in 2026-27.

John Mobley Jr. announced that he will test the NBA draft waters on Tuesday, but if he stays in college, it will be at Ohio State.

Nothing wrong with finding out the 'missing piece' in obtaining a NBA draft number. Gives one something to work towards. Unlike football, don't see many NBA ex-players returning to coaching (relatively speaking). So, who gives these kids the secret sauce to get drafted? No, don't believe Mobley is NBA-ready yet, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but declaring for NBA (w/o signing with an agent), is not the same as declaring for the portal. Ergo, portal is closed, so it's NBA or return to former team, am thinking. Only brighter and wiser as to what is needed in order to advance. On another issue, wouldn't want to waste Mobley's energy bringing the ball upcourt. Would rather see him go downcourt, set up, look to break, and then turn and shoot, rather than all the dribble stuff a PG needs to be good at. Anyway, just a thought on a Tuesday morning.

Ohio State basketball announces the return of John Mobley Jr.

Having Mobley back is a massive boost for an Ohio State team that lost a lot of talent at the guard spot. They lost three guards to the portal, which left them desperate for talent. With Mobley returning, the Buckeyes have the best volume 3-point shooter back.

Mobley is able to stretch the defense because of his in-the-gym range. He is someone who can make shots off the dribble, as well as off the catch. That makes him a dangerous player, and the Buckeyes need more dangerous shooters. Bringing Mobley back helps them do just that.

With Mobley back in tow, he will likely start next to transfer guard Justin Pippen. Those two players will lead the backcourt, while freshman Anthony Thompson will be the best player in the frontcourt. Amare Bynum returns at the power forward spot, so the starting lineup is almost set.

And it's with a sigh of relief, I step away from the ledge. Never believed he would jump to NBA, but now it's official. So Diebs can take this piece, and look for a final rook/knight/bishop to put on the board. Getting Mobley back is the best portal get we could make.

John Mobley Jr. Went Through NBA Draft Process “With Both Feet In,” But His “Heart Was Always at Ohio State”

John Mobley Jr. didn’t just test the NBA draft waters, he dove in headfirst. Now back at Ohio State, he returns with a clear blueprint to improve, both as an individual and as a teammate.

Mobley loves being a Buckeye, but he knew that what's best for both his future and the Ohio State men's basketball team was for him to go through the NBA draft process while maintaining his eligibility. And not just go through it half-heartedly, but to go all in, both for him to get the best feedback and to develop and craft his game to figure out the things he must improve on the most.

"Go in with both feet in," Mobley said on June 19 while speaking to the media for the first time this offseason, words that Jake Diebler said earlier in the offseason. “Going in to do everything with the intentions of going to the NBA. Got good feedback."
Mobley didn't receive an invite to the NBA Scouting Combine, but he still had private workouts with NBA teams, all of whom gave him feedback. Although his shooting ability received rave reviews, he was told he needed to improve his defense and physicality. At 6-2 and 190 pounds, Mobley is smaller than most NBA guards, but he can make up for that to some extent by being more physical.

Now back at Ohio State for his third season with the Buckeyes, Mobley has already started to apply the feedback he received to his game.
