OHIO STATE'S TEMPO ON OFFENSE REPRESENTS KEY TO OFFSETTING POWERFUL TIGER DEFENSIVE FRONT

78519_h.jpg,qitok=y7dQ1UBp.pagespeed.ce.swHQn-LSNT.jpg

The most important conversation before Ohio State and Clemson square off in the Fiesta Bowl might happen before the game even starts and between a coach and the men wearing stripes.

“I know some of our coaches do, the refs and coaches have a little powwow before the game,” Ohio State guard Billy Price said Tuesday. “I don't know what goes on in that meeting but I'm assuming it's said then.”

"It" is Ohio State's desire and plan to use tempo within its offense. "It" is a conversation with Urban Meyer or any other member of Ohio State's offensive staff and the referees for the College Football Playoff which entails the Buckeyes informing those with the whistles how they want the ball set hastily so as to not allow the Tigers to substitute fresh bodies up front. "It" could be the difference between an Ohio State victory and one for the Tigers.

Price and Ohio State's offensive line often tell their coaches they feel confident in how they are moving bodies in the trenches to just run the ball every play, score points and win games. The Buckeyes ran wild against Wisconsin, Alabama and Oregon in the postseason on the way to the national championship. Cardale Jones complemented things nicely with his ability to stretch the field vertically. But the reason Ohio State won it all was Ezekiel Elliott and the offensive line.

An uptempo approach sat absent often last year, until the Buckeyes trucked Michigan and then Notre Dame to finish the season 12-1. Taylor Decker, Pat Elflein and Price said after it all ended that their success came from wearing down the Wolverines and Fighting Irish by getting up to the line of scrimmage quickly play after play and whipping their counterparts to the tune of 254 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in those two games.

It is on Ohio State to let the officials know they plan to use tempo and thus set the ball at the new line of scrimmage rapidly. An offensive plan can backfire should the offense not get first downs and in return force its defense back on the field without much rest. But Price also brought up two teams that had success with tempo this year against Clemson.

“We watched NC State do it, we watched Pitt do it and some other teams that had some success with it,” he said.

MEET BRENT VENABLES: CLEMSON'S ‘UNORTHODOX’ DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR IS TASKED WITH SLOWING DOWN OHIO STATE'S OFFENSE

78520_h_0.jpg,qitok=INjK_uhB.pagespeed.ce.aULrKNdyJt.jpg

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Brent Venables knows how to work an audience.

Clemson’s defensive coordinator entered the media room at the J.W. Marriott Camelback Inn and Resort on Tuesday morning sporting a crisp navy blue suit with a striped orange and purple tie. He flashed smile after smile and confidently answered questions on an array of topics: Ohio State’s offense, defending Curtis Samuel and J.T. Barrett and his overall defensive philosophy just to name a few.

There wasn’t a single question thrown Venables’ way he didn't handle.

And this is precisely what it’s like when you’re one of the top assistant coaches in the country.

“Intense is the word I would use,” Clemson defensive tackle Carlos Watkins said of Venables. “He don’t change. He’s always going to be intense. He’s a perfectionist and he wants to be the best and he challenges us to be the best and that’s why I love him as a defensive coordinator.”

Five reasons why No. 3 Ohio State will win the College Football Playoff

There's only one team in the field that's beaten Alabama in a playoff game

The Buckeyes are a team that can win their second national title in three seasons, and I'm here to tell you why.

1. They have the talent: Here's all you need to know about Ohio State and its depth. After last season, the Buckeyes had 12 players chosen in the NFL Draft with three taken in the first 10 picks, five in the first round and none taken after the fourth round. It's safe to say that just about any other program in the country that suffers those kind of losses will need a year to rebound, but not Ohio State. No, when it comes to the depth chart, only Ohio State can challenge Alabama when it comes to talent on the roster.

In the five years between the 2012 and 2016 recruiting classes, Ohio State put together classes in the top seven every season. Using the 247Sports Composite rankings, Ohio State has landed five five-star players and 80 four-star players in that five-year span. Aside from Alabama and Florida State, there just aren't many other programs that have recruited on such a high level in recent years. So no matter who the Buckeyes are playing, they're usually better than the players they're lined up against.

2. J.T. Barrett doesn't turn the ball over: Over the last three seasons, Ohio State's quarterback has thrown 807 passes and carried the ball 480 times. In those 1,287 touches, he's turned the ball over a grand total of 22 times (19 interceptions, three fumbles lost). Of those 22 turnovers, 11 of them came in 2014, Barrett's first season as a starter, and the year the Buckeyes won a national title.

This year he has seven turnovers (five interceptions, two fumbles). He's also accounted for 100 touchdowns over the last three seasons, so that's a pretty good touchdown-to-turnover ratio -- particularly for somebody who has the football in his hands so often.

Turnovers can play a key role in any game, but in a playoff game like the one Ohio State will play against Clemson, and a possible national title game after that where you're playing another great team, they take on even more importance. Barrett's ability to take care of the ball has been a major boost to the Buckeyes over the last three seasons.

Just wanted to let you know I'm still alive. Thankfully (?) I've been distracted with my husband's three sisters and their drama.

But, everyday I have a little heart attack. So, things are still on track.

Stupid random bitch of a relative gave us an orange Lands End bag and Matt a BRIGHT ORANGE hat for Christmas. They're not Clemson fans...just dumb.

This hasn't been talked about but could there have been a worse player to call out in the media than JT? Not because it'll piss JT off to have a great game but because he is without a doubt our leader and captain.

He's so revered to our team that when you take a jab at him it's almost like you took a jab at the entire team. Yeah the kid from clemson also called out Jackson from Louisville but Jackson isn't that teams heart. Nor is he their voice and identity which is exactly what JT is to us.

That was the wrong kid to call out because I think that kid from Clemson just gave every unit on our team motivation. Motivation that quite frankly we already didn't need but will use ruthlessly nonetheless.
