The final score was bad, but it really wasn't an ass kicking for 3/4th of the game thanks to the superb effort and execution of the defense. Valiant, even, in the face of the absolute disaster that was the offense.
Even a mildly competent offensive performance and that is a close game. A good offensive performance and that was a win, possibly even a comfortable win, given how well the defense was playing.
It's a shame such an effort against an elite opponent was wasted.
It's also pretty amazing that Meyer lost to Clemson in '13 because his defense was a disaster while his offense was amazing. Now he lost to them in '16 because his offense is a disaster and his defense is amazing.
I'm curious, in the four weeks leading up to the game, what the conversations between Meyer and Warriner/Beck were like.
Meyer: Hey guys, what are you seeing on tape? What are you working on?
Warriner/Beck: Well, their DTs are really good, so we've got this genius plan to get rid of the ball quickly while also attacking the edge... wait for it... we're going to throw the ball quickly to the flats.
Meyer: Okay, that sounds... like a decent... complementary play to sprinkle in with some sort of base package that really attacks their weak LBs and DBs vertically and/or in the middle of the field.
Warriner/Beck: Oh, well... no, we were just planning on throwing it quickly to the flats all day.
Meyer is too good of a coach for that to be the case. Which makes me suspect the offense comes up with a plan and then Warriner/Beck just absolutely shit down their leg when a defense throws something at them they weren't expecting and is utterly incapable of adjusting on the fly.
This explains the "good" games they've managed to put together in the past... when the defense didn't throw anything at them they weren't expecting causing them to completely abandon any semblance of a strategy.
This also explains why teams like Indiana and Northwestern have managed to make the offense look so bad. You don't even need to be talented- just do something unexpected and OSU will struggle literally the entire game to adjust.
Once again- I recognize that JT has arm limitations and the WRs and OL were incredibly inconsistent all season. But which came first, bad coaching and incompetent play calls? Or poor execution from the players?
Good coaching mitigates issues like a young OL and a QB with throwing limitations... bad coaching make it a million times worse.
