The 46-year-old OSU Ice Rink was a fitting setting for the kind of hockey played last night by Ohio State and Northern Michigan in the opener of their first-round Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series, won by the Buckeyes 6-2. The victory gives Ohio State a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, which resumes at 7:05 tonight.

Re: Ohio State, forced out of Value City Arena because of the state high school wrestling tournament, was cautious early in its first playoff game in its former home since 1998. Although Northern Michigan (13-22-2) had the better of the play in the first period, Ohio State (15-15-5) countered with some old-fashioned hitting worthy of the aromatic old barn and the 779 hard-core fans who occupied it.

That sucks!!! :mad2:

Embarrassing for the program labelled by SI as THE preeminent sports university in the country. Pathetic.

Lucky Number: NMU Forces Game 3 With OT Win At OSU

Yesterday's game: Final in OT Northern Michigan 3 - Ohio State 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Apparently, the 10th time is the charm.
The Northern Michigan Wildcats played their 10th game in Columbus since rejoining the CCHA and earned their first win in Ohio's capital city when it counted, beating Ohio State in overtime, 3-2, to force a third game in this best-of-three CCHA first-round playoff series.

The Wildcats (14-22-2) and the Buckeyes (15-16-5) face off at 7 p.m. Sunday for the deciding game in the OSU Ice Arena, and Kyle said that the'Cats will need all the intensity and desperation they displayed in Saturday's third period and overtime.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Four of the five games Ohio State had played before a first-round Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff loss last night to Northern Michigan were decided by one goal. Last night?s, won 3-2 by the Wildcats, was an overtime affair and a nail-gnawer right up until the moment senior Dusty Collins potted the winner with 3:15 elapsed in overtime and tied the best-of-three series.

It's time for a change!

Markell has utterly failed to turn our Frozen Four appearance into consistent, long term success.

Right now, Paul Pooley is the hottest young coach in college hockey. He's a Buckeye, and it's time to bring him home.

</IMG> KYLE ROBERTSON DISPATCH Ohio State?s Joseph Palmer stops a Northern Michigan shot during the first period of the CCHA playoff game.

The puck appeared seemingly from nowhere, but that was of little concern. Crucial to the matter at hand was that Nick Sirota emerged from a scrum in his own end with puck at the blade of his stick and Northern Michigan teammate Zach Tarkir at his left hip. The pair took off, a lone defender and Ohio State goaltender Joseph Palmer between them and a tying goal and a head of steam that would not dissipate until the 10 thseeded Wildcats had secured a 3-2 win and ousted the Buckeyes from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs.
