B4 I get to the offensive breakdown I want to make a couple comments about the D.
- We got beat up front in the first half, keeping the game close. Minny's O-line is very good. It was a different story in the second half.
- We tryed to force them to throw and they were able to, that opened up the running game in the first half.
-I think Youbouty was hurting, b/c he was trying to break on balls too early leaving him getting beat.
- Our second half adjustments have been great all year, I just want to give Minny some credit that they were able to move the ball on our D. I didnt see it coming, I think they had a great game plan. Hopefully we get back to form this week and close out the season good.
Now on to the offense.
We had 12 total drives for the game and our offensive avg. starting point was our own 40 yd. line. Our offense had decent field position most of the day. The last 2 drives were just drives to kill the clock so we actually had 10 drives were we actually tried to move the ball and score. Out of those 10 drives we scored points on 6 of those. That is pretty damn good.
Once again I really liked the balance of the offense.
We ran basically 3 formations.
We ran the I, singleback, and base shotgun
We lined up in the I 16 times
We ran 12 times for an avg. of about 3.0 yds/carry. 9 of the runs were on the last two drives and 7 of the carries were to Mo Wells. I run I liked the best was the statue of liberty play to Pittman that went for 15 yards.
We tried to throw 4 times, once Smith was sacked, once was the 1st td to holmes, once was the 35 yd. pass to Ginn and the other was the deep out to Holmes that was jumped and almost picked off.
I really liked how we came out throwing out the I formation on the first two drives and went down the field.
We lined up in Singleback 26 times, we threw 9 times and ran 17. We scored 3 td's.
Of the 9 times we threw the ball we went over the top to Ginn and were both incomplete. Smith completed 3 outs 2 to Holmes and 1 to Ginn. 2 balls to Gonzo that went up the seam, one for 11 yards and the td for 27 yds. They were both great reads, I loved how he checked off on the td pass. We also ran a screen for 15 yds. and a boot pass were Smith hit White in the flat for 1 yd. I like the boot and hope that we keep it in the playbook. Smith was 7/9 for 86 yds, 1TD.
Of the 17 times we ran the ball Pittman went for 150 yds and 8.8yds/carry and 2 tds.
Pittman only had once run that went for negative yards and that was only for -1. He had long runs of 67, 15, 14, 13 which is really good.
I really liked the play where we faked the end around to Ginn and pitched it to Pitt, and he went for 13 yds, at first it looked like he was going to throw it.
We lined up in shotgun 21 times Tried to throw 10 times and ran 11 times.
We scored 1 times out of this formation On the play where Smith rolled out and threw to Holmes for 31 yds.
Of the 10 times we attempted a pass play, one time Smith was flushed and ran for 2 yards and another he stepped up and made a nice pass to Gonzo which was negated by a holding penalty. So Smith was 5/8 for 72yds.
We ran the fake option pass twice, one complete to Frost for 6 yds. and one to Gonzo for 14 yds. Smith ahd a couple bad throws, one underthrow to Ginn on an out, one behind Holmes on a crossing pattern and one that was tipped at the LOS. The best play tho was the play that was called back b/c of holding where he moved around in the pocket and stepped up and kept his eyes downfield and hit Gonzo.
Of the 11 runs we ran for 3.7 yds/carry.
We ran the option 7 times. Smith kept it 2 times for 5yds. = 2.5yds/carry. He pitched it 1 time for 1yds.
We ran one qb draw for 9 yd.
We handed off to Pittman 1 times for 6 yds and Wells once for 1yd.
We ran 5 QB keepers for 19 yds = 3.8yds/carry
Overall pretty balanced and Smith made good reads and Pittman made some nice runs.
Overall out of the 10 drives that we were actually trying to score we were forced to punt 3 times (once we went to kick a fg, but there was a false start), 1TOD, 1fg, and 5 drives ended with a td.
Of the 3 drives that ended in a punt.
1. We had a bad series, it was 3rd and 5 and Smith Underthrew Ginn on an out. We went 3 and out, our only one of the day.
2. First we had a sack that moved us back 9 yds. and then we picked up the first down on the pass to Gonzo, but there was a holding penalty, and on 3rd and 24 we ran a qb draw.
3. We were ready to try a 50 yd. fg, which I think Hu would of made in the dome, but One of the lineman jumped and we decided to punt. On the 3rd down play of the drive, Smith had a guy open, but the ball was tipped at the LOS.
Also the one fg drive.
1. We had a good drive going, but on 3rd and 7 Smith threw it behind Holmes who couldnt catch it, if caught he probably runs for the first down.
The TOD we also had a great drive going, but we were unable to get a push on the 4th and 1 qb sneak ending the drive.
Overall we scored on 60% of our drives and the other 4 we shot ourselves in the foot.
The 5 td's were 2 for Pitt, 2 for Holmes, 1 for Gonzo All were great examples of executed plays.
Overall I thought our O' played a really good game with exception of the drive killed by a penalty and the no push on the 4th and 1.
I give our O' and A for the day.
Good Things:
-Smith is continued to improve this week and you can just see it in the way he has been going through his reads and trying to get the ball int he hands of the playmakers. He only tucked the ball and ran one time in this game. He had a couple check down reads that I liked and he was really feeding the ball with accuracy. I liked the audible at the line of the td for Gonzo, and I like the fact that when he is flushed from the pocket he is not just tucking it and running, he is looking to find open recievers.
-Pittman continued to show us something. He runs very hard and he is turning into a very good back. I believe he had 186 yds. For his career high. He was Co Big Ten offensive player of the week, and he finally got a td. what more could we ask for.
- Once again Wells got some key pt and while he didnt have any big runs, he had a couple nice runs of 4 and 5 yds. that show, what he can do.
-We continue to have the big plays, and I hope they can continue.
- I like the offensive gameplan and the playcalling. I like what I have seen the last 3 weeks, with the screens, draws, sweeps, pa, and just good execution. Tress keeps adding new wrinkles everyweek and they are really paying off.
-I thought the O-line play was exceptional today, besides the sack Sims gave up and the holding which were on the same drive, they were opening up huge holes and Smith had some good time to look and see the field.
- I loved the way the O' came out in the second half and just ran it down their throats, and then hit them over the top. It was great to see.
- No To's
- Those couldnt of been big ten refs out there, b/c they actually called a good game.
Negatives:
- Besides the 4th and 1 play and the penalty and sack, there are not many things I can find wrong.
- Smith is vastly improving, but there were still a couple balls that were underthrown and overthrown, but he had a great day, so no reason to nitpick.
Take what you want from this analysis but I give the offensive performance an A for the day.
Misc. Notes.
For the peole that were calling for Jt's head as the OC, I think he is showing that he is better suited for calling plays out the I and singleback than the gun. I the love the balance of his playcalls and they have not been predictable. If there is anyone that can honestly sit here and say they saw the PA pass over the top on the first play of the game they are kidding themselves. We also see how much better the day goes without TO's and good exectution.
- We got beat up front in the first half, keeping the game close. Minny's O-line is very good. It was a different story in the second half.
