CBF40's breakdown of the Illinois game.

crazybuckfan40

Head Coach
We had 11 total drives for the game and our offensive avg. starting point was our own 33 yd. line. Our offense had decent field position most of the day. The last drive of the first half was were we just took a knee and the last drive of the game we were just handing the ball off basically so I don't consider it to be a drive where our first string O' was driving to score a td. So we actually had 9 drives where we tried to score and and we scored on 7 out of the 9 and 7 in a row. That is 78% of our drives.

Once again I really liked the balance of the offense.

We ran basically 3 formations.

We ran the I, singleback, and shotgun

We lined up in the I 17 times

We ran 14 times for an avg. of about 4.0 yds/carry. 6 of the runs were on the last drive and Haw had 2/9, Wells 1/4, Franzinger 1/3, Daniels 1/4. Pittman had 6/28, we seem to use this a lot in short yardage. There was also one run called back for holding.

We threw 3 times, all were the same play, twice Smith hit Frost on crossing patterns for 17 yds each and once Zwick hit B. Smith for 5 yards.

Overall I think we mainly use this formation to pick up short yardage and to run the clock out, and also to try and catch the D off guard with a pass play.

We lined up in Singleback 20 times, we tried to throw 3 times and ran 17 times. We scored 3 td's.

Of the 3 times we tried once Smith was forced to tuck it and run and picked up 20 yds. The other two times, one was overthrow to Holmes over the top, and one was the 4 yd. TD pass to Holmes.

Of the 17 times we ran the ball 5 were on the last drive to run out the clock Haw had 2/5, Wells had 6/15, and Pittman went for 43 yds on 8 carries = 4.8yds/carry and 2 tds.

We basically just lined up and powered it right at them besides the one pitch to Pittman where he went for his 16 yd. td.

We lined up in shotgun 34 times Tried to throw 23 times and ran 11 times.

We scored 2 times out of this formation On the deep out to Holmes that he took to the house for 41 yds. and the fly pattern to Ginn for 73 yds.

Of the 23 times we attempted a pass play, there was one PI call 2 throw aways by smith under pressure, and he tucked it twice running for 22 yds.

Smith was 10/17 for 264 and 2 tds.
Zwick was 2/3 for 22 yds.

The two tds were things of beauty, the first one to Holmes was great timing by qb and wr and then Holmes made a great move. Then the Fly pattern was great and Smith put it in there perfectly.

Smith started off shaky, but then got hot(I will get to this later)

It was nice to see Dukes and Harden catch passes from Zwick.

Of the 11 runs we ran for 4.0 yds/carry.

We ran the option 5 times. Smith kept it 3 times for 8yds. He pitched it 1 time for 5yds to Pitt and Zwick pitched it one time for 7yds to Wells.

We ran one qb draw for 4 yd.

We handed off to Pittman 3 times for 13 yds and Wells once for -2yds.

We also lined Teddy up at QB and he ran a QB draw for 8 yds.

Overall out of the 9 drives that we were actually trying to score we were forced to punt 2 times, 2fg, and 5 drives ended with a td.

Of the 2 drives that ended in a punt.
1. We had 3rd and 4 and Smith threw it a little behind Gonzo.
2. We had 2 false start penalties and on 3rd and 11 Smith had pressure and was forced to throw it away.

Also the two fg drives.
1. We had a nice drive going we were inside the 5 and then we had an illegal sub., then Smith overthrew Holmes on a fade route and on 3rd and goal from the 10 Smith tried to Hit white in the flat, but he dropped it, he might of got in.
2. We once again had a nice drive going, but stalled in the redzone when on 3rd and 8 Smith missed Holmes.
Overall we scored on 60% of our drives and the other 4 we shot ourselves in the foot.

The 5 td's were 2 for Pitt, 2 for Holmes, 1 for Ginn All were great examples of executed plays.

Overall I thought our O' played a pretty good game with exception of the first two drives and then stalling in the red-zone for fgs. But we once again put up 40 pts, so I would give the performance a B+/A-.

Good Things:

-Smith continues to just improve and improve some more. He came out very shaky for whatever reason. I watched him in warmups and he was missing recievers then overthrows, underthrows, and just not coming close. Once he got settled in, he hit about 10 straight passes and he finally hit that deep ball to Ginn. There were 2 times were he made great decisions to throw the ball away, one time when he could of hit Gonzo for a big gain, but Gonzo was held so he took off for 17 yds. and one time when he was flushed out of the pocket and hit Gonzo for about 15 yds. On the day Smith was 13/21 for 298yds. It was a career day for his passing yardage.

-Pittman continued to show us something, while not a whole lot, we ran basic Iso and Dives and he put up 22/96 yds 4.4avg. There was nothing flashy, but he once again found the endzone 2 times and he was running hard once again. He also had one screen for 20 yds. and another pass play for 21 yds.

- Once again Wells got in and and a couple nice runs.

- We continue to have the big plays, and I hope they can continue.

- I still like the playcalling even know at times it was very vanilla, but I don't think Tress wanted to waste showing anything leading up to NW and scUM. Overall Tress was very happy with the O' besides the first couple drives and so was I.

- We scored on 7 straight drives, what more could we ask for.

-I thought the O-line played decent, the holes were not huge, but there were some creases and Smith was only hurried about 5 times all game and there were no sacks.

- I loved the way the O' came out in the second half and just ran it down their throats, and then hit them over the top. It was great to see.

- Those couldnt of been big ten refs out there, b/c they actually called a good game.(Same as last week, what is going on, that is twice in a row we have had good officiating.)

Negatives:

- I thought we came out flat, a little shaky, I know it was windy early and I think that had a little effect on the first couple drives, but I think it just took our guys a little time to get settle in, they were playing Illinois.

- TO's we need to create them and not have any.

Misc. Notes.

- When I got on here I was so suprised at what some of the people were saying about how we didnt perform up to where we should have. I don't know what you guys want, for us to score on 100% of our drives. Not even USC does that. Some of you guys are too hypocritical one week you say all I want is an avg. offense in terms of national rankings and then the next you want a million yards of offense. We had 526 yds. of total offense. We had balance 202/324, we scored 40 pts. What else can we do.

- Some people thought that Illinois was just going to show up and we were going to just score 100, well they are d-I athletes while not as good as us they are still out there and they came fired up to play, like they always do against us, and we came out flat causing our O' to struggle early, but once we got going it was fun to watch.

Season outlook:

Just some things for the O' haters to chew on, who have been saying about the lack of competition:

1. We scored more points against Minny than anyone else they have played and that included scUM(Home), PSU(Home), and Purdue(2OT). Also the most against Iowa and Okie St. is the only team to score more against Texas.

Only MSU and Minny scored more against IU than we did and that was just by a total combined 6 pts.

Only PSU, MSU, Wisky scored more against Ill. than we did and I am sure they had some TO's, I didnt break those games down, but I am sure that they had more than 9 drives for the game, like we did.

2. We have punted 5 times in the last 2 games.

3. We have scored on 21 of our last 44 possessions we have tried to score and not run out the clock. That is 47%.

4. We have scored 40 or more pts. in 3 straight games and 35 or more in 4 straight. That last team to score 40 or more in 3 straight games, I believe they said was 1995. Not even the 98 team did that.

So anyone who wants to say that the O' is not vastly improving and playing great please contend these statements and don't just tell me that the D's arent that good.

And by the way fuck the BCS.

CBF40 really did his homework here. The stats were great. At the beginning of the game we were shooting ourselves in the foot but we settled down nicely which i figured would happen. It just a matter of time.

i would just like to say fuck the BCS as well...

Nice breakdown CBF..As usuall..

The highlight of the game, when Teddy popped his jersey after his TD..Loved it..

And correct me if im wrong..But wasnt Hawks first sack a freakin safety?? I dunno if i missed his knee hitting the one, but damnit it looked like a safety to me..

Our offense is fantastic...God damnit i wish we could start the season over playing the way we are now..

This team has so much talent, so much pride..They are absolutely fantastic to watch..I always get sad around this time of year, cause i know we are gettin to the end of the season..Its a bummer..

if he had two throw aways he should have been 10/19 on passes

zwick was 3/4 for 27 yards in the game

other than that great work 40

Those are just out of the Gun, and we att. 23 throws. one PI call 2, times where he tucked in and ran. So that leaves 17 for smith and 3 for Zwick, unless Imissed something.

Hawks first sack wasnt a safety. They go off of contact when the player is starting to be pulled down, which was the 1.5 yd. line.
