CB Shaun Wade (1st Team All American, Los Angeles Chargers)

Kiper’s No. 6 prospect — and top defensive back — is cornerback Shaun Wade. Wade was outstanding as a slot corner last year and everyone is excited to see him on the outside this year, including Kiper. Wade is one spot ahead of Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr.

“On a defense that just had two first-round corners in Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette, Wade played mostly in the slot, but his athleticism popped when I studied the Buckeyes. He’s going to move outside in 2020, but the versatility to move inside or outside is an asset as he transitions to the NFL. Wade has four interceptions over the past two seasons, and he also picked up two sacks in 2019. He is going to be the man in the new-look Ohio State secondary this season.”

Three Buckeyes among top 25 players that returned to school

Every year, dozens of underclassmen make the decision to forgo their final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft. For the most part, those players ultimately end up being selected.

However, on some occasions, players that left school early do not ultimately hear their name called over the course of the three-day, seven-round draft. Those underclassmen probably would have been better off sticking around campus for another year of seasoning.

With that in mind, Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus recently published a list of the top 25 college football players that decided to return to school for the 2020 season.

Three Ohio State Buckeyes standouts appear on the list: guard Wyatt Davis, cornerback Shaun Wade and running back Trey Sermon.

.
.
Coming in at No. 10 is Wade, who played opposite first-round pick Jeff Okudah last season and held his own. For the season, Wade had 26 tackles (four loss), two sacks, one interceptions, seven passes defended and two forced fumbles.

“What Wade needs to prove in 2020 is simple: show he can hold up at outside corner,” Renner wrote. "He’s played a grand total of 55 snaps on the outside in his career with the vast majority of his snaps coming from the slot for the Buckeyes. While he has the tools, that doesn’t mean the transition will be an easy one.”

SHAUN WADE - CORNERBACK
Redshirt junior Shaun Wade is a no-brainer for this list based on his first-round NFL talent and Ohio State's lack of proven players in what will be a retooled secondary following the departures of Jeff Okudah, Damon Arnette and Jordan Fuller.

A third-team All-Big Ten selection as primarily an inside/slot corner in 2019, Wade tied Arnette for second place on the squad with eight pass breakups in 13 games.

Wade moves to the outside as Ohio State's No. 1 corner this fall and Day is counting on him a big way. There's little reason to believe Wade won't successfully make the transition based on his experience and talent.

While Wade's elite play is basically at expectation at this point, the same can't be said for the rest of the secondary. The talent is there but most of it hasn't proven enough yet to assume it's a lock which only increases Wade's importance.

Sevyn Banks, Cameron Brown, Tyreke Johnson and Marcus Williamson will all make their case for playing time opposite Wade and in his vacated slot spot and while gifted, none have logged extensive time in meaningful games.

My money would be on Banks and Brown to seize the two starting spots or, at minimum, rotate on the outside.

At safety, Josh Proctor will start and could be in line for a big season if his discipline and tackling take the next step. Marcus Hooker should also see rotational time.

Assuming Banks, Brown and Procter join him in the starting lineup, those three combined played just 18 more snaps than Wade logged by himself last season.

6. SHAUN WADE, CB (1,042 SNAPS)
After playing both slot cornerback and safety in his first playing season in 2018, Wade became a full-time starter at the slot cornerback position last season, when Ohio State moved to a three-cornerback base defense. Now with two years of playing experience under his belt, Wade is by far the most proven defensive back in a Buckeye secondary that is replacing its three other starters from 2019.

Set to play as an outside cornerback in 2020, Wade’s decision to stay at Ohio State for another year provides a crucial boost to a position group that might otherwise be the biggest question mark on the team. Expected to be one of the best cornerbacks in all of college football this fall, Wade is now the biggest star of the Buckeyes’ defense and will be expected to step into a leadership capacity on the back end.

Ohio State right guard Wyatt Davis was selected as a first-team preseason All-American while quarterback Justin Fields and cornerback Shaun Wade were selected as second-team preseason All-Americans by the Walter Camp Football Foundation, one of the five voting bodies that determines consensus All-Americans at the end of the season.

Wade was only a third-team All-Big Ten selection last season, but he's widely recognized as one of the best cornerbacks in the country and is now set to be the star of Ohio State's secondary following the departures of Jeff Okudah, Damon Arnette and Jordan Fuller. If Wade plays up to his potential in 2020 while moving to the outside cornerback position, he's more than capable of following in Okudah's footsteps and earning first-team All-American honors this fall.

Recently, Pro Football Focus ranked Wade the second-best cornerback prospect ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft behind only Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley. PFF’s Michael Renner wrote that Wade has the chance to push his draft stock “into the stratosphere” with a productive season for the Scarlet and Gray.

NFL.com analyst and former NFL scout Daniel Jeremiah also believes a big year is in store for Wade. During his evaluation of top prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft, Jeremiah wrote the following on the Ohio State cornerback:

Wade has ideal size/length and he plays with tremendous awareness. He primarily aligns in the slot, but he will roll back to the deep middle in some of Ohio State's coverage schemes. He's very disciplined as a zone defender, showing the ability to quickly read pattern combinations and position himself to make plays on the ball.

In man coverage, Wade is patient and avoids false steps. He's a smooth, fluid mover and he can build speed to catch up down the field. He's also a very dynamic blitzer from the slot. He disguises well and displayed the ability to dip and bend around the offensive tackle in the Cincinnati game. He earned a sack and forced a fumble on that play. He's also a very reliable tackler. I love his overall toughness and demeanor.

...

Wade has some areas where he can improve, but he likely would have been a first-round pick had he declared for the 2020 NFL Draft. He'll have an opportunity to prove he can hold up outside at cornerback this fall and that should only increase his value for the next level. He could emerge as the premier player at his position in the country. Ohio State knows how to develop defensive backs. He's next in line.

This fact was confirmed once again when Sporting News named its 2020 college football preseason All-American teams. The Buckeyes were one of only six teams to have multiple players on the first team, as well as one player on the second team.

The Scarlet and Gray's other Sporting News preseason first-team All-American representative is cornerback Shaun Wade. Another former five-star prospect on Ohio State's roster and the second-ranked corner in the 2017 recruiting class, Wade had to redshirt his freshman season due to an injury. As a redshirt freshman, Wade played nickel and safety for the Buckeyes, recording 31 total tackles and three interceptions.

With the Scarlet and Gray moving to three cornerbacks last year, Wade played the slot position for Ohio State. He managed 26 total tackles, seven passes defended, two forced fumbles and one interception and was named a third-team All-American.

Urban Meyer names his top-5 defensive players

Meyer then chose a player he both recruited and coached, Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade. With Jeff Okudah and Damon Arnette departing for the NFL, the No. 17 overall player in the 247Sports Composite from the class of 2017 will be the No.1 cornerback for the Buckeyes. Wade recorded 26 total tackles, four tackles for a loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception last season.
