CB Marshon Lattimore (2017 NFL Def ROY, 3x Pro Bowl, Washington Commanders)

SEEMINGLY OUT OF NOWHERE, OHIO STATE'S MARSHON LATTIMORE EMERGED AS A POTENTIAL FIRST-ROUND PICK THIS SEASON

Marshon Lattimore was home for the holidays and he finally had some time to reflect.

Ohio State’s redshirt sophomore cornerback thought about all he had been through the last two years to get to this point and how much of a relief it was to finally be out on the field contributing.

“When I was home with my family, we talked about it a lot,” Lattimore said Thursday at Fiesta Bowl media day. “The past two years I’ve been injured and now that people are getting to see what I can do and they know what I can do.”

“They know I can play football and that’s a great feeling.”

It’s important to first understand why Lattimore feels such a sense of relief.

A once highly-touted four-star prospect out of Glenville High School in Cleveland, Lattimore came to Ohio State with rather lofty expectations. He was a top-50 player coming out of high school from a powerhouse program that produced plenty of NFL-caliber players and he was expected by many to be the next big thing.

But just a few days into his freshman season, Lattimore tore his hamstring and had to shut things down for the year. For a player who expected to contribute from Day 1, the setback was obviously frustrating.

Lattimore thought he was healthy heading into the 2015 season and was ready to be part of a cornerback rotation with Gareon Conley and Eli Apple, but the hamstring injury lingered. He never felt right and wound up appearing in just seven games with limited snaps. Again, frustration set in.

But after countless hours spent working on a number of different things — a change in diet, yoga, constant treatment and more — Lattimore finally got himself to 100 percent prior to this season.

Ohio State certainly reaped the benefits.

“That’s like my best friend and I know he deserves it for all the hard work he put in when he was hurt and going through rehab,” Conley said. “It’s finally paying off and I’m happy for him.”

THIS would be the biggest news out of them all. Losing 2 lockdown corners worries me more than other positions. This was such a talented secondary- probably one of the best I've seen at OSU.

Still not getting hopes up too much. He can get his degree at any time with the millions he'd get 1st round.

Couple of G'ville kids making TGSr a proud man... not that he isn't already, but that kinda statement makes a youth coach feel good about the work they put into a kid in terms of making a good man off the field.

Congrats to him if he does stay for the sheepskin.

Nice get for us too.

Geez I honestly feel like he's coming back... he will be rested in the spring no doubt and in fall ball. Really he can be in a class of its own if he comes back next year. Lock top 5 pick

If he does... it would be a ENORMOUS disappointment if we don't win it all (assuming Wilson is our OC)

Dude honestly needs to go given his injury history and if he's truly the top corner in the draft. It'd be irresponsible of the coaches to push him to stay.

All that said, plz come back, Marshon!

I think it's pretty clear by now the coaches don't push any kid to stay

Different people put different value on different things. Rumors would seem to indicate Lattimore puts a lot of value on the degree (and not just the earning power it represents the first 4-5 years out of school).

So take that into account and figure he still gets a second bite of the apple as it were with a very reasonable chance to get drafted highly next year PLUS the school pays for an insurance policy if he gets injured.

I'm not saying that is the ideal decision in my mind but it does make a lot more sense if you highly value the degree-right-now part of the equation.

Have loved this kid since Glenville days... but he has to go

Look how many won't play a bowl game... let alone a whole season... and with his injury history...
let alone he's generally considered the #1 or at worst, #2 CB.. going in round 1.. maybe top 15
ya gotta go

that degree will be there.. NFL career is a limited time offering

Lastly, to quote @Systems_id "All that said, plz come back, Marshon!"

I think this day and age is a little different......he can take out a nice insurance policy to at least partially cover himself, but some kids are different. He's what, 20 or 21? A chance to lead the secondary, go for personal awards, aim for a national championship and the reality is the NFL is all work and no play. He's at OSU, he gets to remain a 'kid' or at least not a full fledged your on your own adult....people enjoy college, people make promises to parents to stay until they graduate, etc.

We had a boatload of guys leave last year and we've heard plenty of former players say they miss playing for OSU, they wish they would have stayed, etc. On the flip side to the above, the NFL is always there, college is gone once you leave. Today's environment is more conducive and protective of players in Marshon's situation.......maybe his main dream is to win a title at OSU and not play in the NFL, and for that I say....."plz come back, Marshon!"

Marshon and Eric Smith came in together. Smith looked to grab a starting safety job and Marshon was dogged by injuries.
Then the situations for both changed.
Lattimore finally got healthy and starred. Smith blew out his knee and is finally getting back now.
I think Lattamore goes Pro.
Smith will make a move at safety in the Spring. He could be outstanding.
