Jeff Okudah injury: Detroit Lions CB out for rest of New York Giants game after entering concussion protocol

Okudah has played and started in all 10 games for the Lions this season after dealing with numerous injuries his first two seasons in the NFL. The former Ohio State star tore his Achilles in the team’s season-opening game in 2021 and played in nine of the team’s 16 games in 2020, missing the opening game with a hamstring injury and the final six with a core muscle ailment.

In nine games entering Sunday’s game at the Giants, Okudah has combined for 50 tackles (42 solo), five passes defensed, an interception that was returned for a touchdown and a forced fumble.

Falcons traded a 5th round pick for Jeff Okudah this morning. Ideally thinking a fresh start in a new place might revitalize his career a bit. Will have a much more talented secondary around him with Jessie Bates and AJ Terrell as well. He does have an 11mm option for 2024 and the birds have until May 1 to pick it up (which I assume they will do).

5th round is an absolute steal. If he stays healthy this year they will have a very good secondary. Not Dolphins good but very good otherwise.

Jeff Okudah undoubtedly stood out as one of, if not the premier cornerback in the 2020 NFL Draft class, going No. 3 overall to the Detroit Lions. The former All-American from Ohio State faced adversity early in his professional career, which affected his ability to stay on the field. After being traded to the Atlanta Falcons in April, Okudah’s coaches hope a change of scenery helps the former Buckeye to return to top form.

“I always talk to him about what he did at Ohio State because whatever he did there he had 31, 32 teams saying that this is the third best player in the NFL Draft. If I can get that guy to think like that? That's the guy I want,” Falcons assistant head coach Jerry Gray said. “Whatever we need to do that, I want that guy. I am always trying to get that guy back because I want that guy.”

After three seasons in Detroit, Okudah was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in April.

“I don’t care about Detroit. No offense to Detroit, but I don’t coach him there. I coach him here in Atlanta, but I want the guy that I’ve seen at Ohio State,” Gray said. “And if I can get that guy’s mindset back, we’ll have a great football player here in Atlanta and that’s really what we’re trying to do.”
