Jay Timmons’ status for Saturday’s game against Iowa will be determined by how much he’s able to practice this week.
“We’ll see how this week goes,” Ryan Day said Tuesday when asked about Timmons’ status for Saturday’s game.
Timmons left the Illinois game in the third quarter with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. After going into Ohio State’s medical tent, Timmons spent some time riding a stationary bike before returning to the sideline without his helmet, indicating he had been ruled out for the game.
If Timmons is unable to play against Iowa, either Jermaine Mathews Jr. or fellow freshman cornerback Jordan Thomas would take his place in the lineup at nickelback, Day said. Against Illinois, Mathews moved to the slot when Timmons left the game, with Cam Calhoun replacing Mathews at outside cornerback.
The lone freshman who’s started for Ohio State this season, Timmons has rapidly become one of the stars of the Buckeye defense, recording nine tackles with four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a tackle for loss in Ohio State’s first four games.
As the Buckeyes look to bounce back defensively after giving up 462 yards against Illinois, it would certainly help to have Timmons in the lineup against the Hawkeyes. But that will depend on how quickly he’s able to recover from his injury.

Yeah and that's the issue caused by mediocre DL play - the next level is under pressure and you can't lose guys like Timmons on the back end. I know he's a frosh but I think he is a pretty damn important piece of this defense moving forward.
