BIG FISH: St. Vincent-St. Mary's Doran Grant (center) scampers to the end zone for first quarter touchdown against Walsh Jesuit on Friday, Oct. 8. (Phil Masturzo, Akron Beacon Journal)

Doran Grant might be a mere 5-foot-11, 178 pounds, but in the realm of the undecided still out there among the 2011 recruiting prospects, he is considered a mighty big fish.

That is certainly the case for the anglers at Ohio State, who have been trying to reel him in for a while. The cornerback from Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary remains elusive, even as he tightens his focus on a landscape that includes at least 25 scholarship offers from schools across the country.

"Right now I have eight schools I am still considering, and I am working to get it down to five so I can set up my official visits," Grant said.

The eight, in no particular order, are Ohio State, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, USC, North Carolina, Penn State, Cincinnati and Iowa. It was difficult, he said, to whittle the list even to eight, which meant dropping Michigan, UCLA, West Virginia and many others.

"It was very tough, because all the schools are basically offering me the same thing, which is they are going to give me the opportunity to come in and play early," Grant said. "Now this is the hard part, because all of those are really good schools with great atmospheres, good coaching staffs and good people."

Webb: What about Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary cornerback Doran Grant? I know Ohio State is accustomed to locking up the five-star prospects in its state, but in my conversations with him I didn't get the feeling that he was a lock for the Buckeyes. Furthermore, his dad makes no bones about his desire to see his son follow in his footsteps to East Lansing.

Trieu: "I think it comes down to Michigan State and Ohio State. I think Ohio State has been the leader, but I think the season and the family ties have allowed Michigan State to gain a lot of ground. I would still say that Ohio State is the favorite there, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if he ends up at Michigan State."

Greene: "I think the Spartans are definitely elevated in his eyes. Is it going to be enough to land him? I do not know. They've got his attention — there is no doubt about it. I think his decision is down to two. I think it is Ohio State and Michigan State and the rest are all just window dressings — nice official visits. A couple of months ago, I would have thought Ohio State was the easy, runaway choice. I've talked to him in the past two weeks and now I do not know. His dad played (at Michigan State), which certainly has some attraction for him. If I had to handicap it, I would say 55 percent to 45 percent with Ohio State over Michigan State, but with Michigan State closing on the outside fast. I think if they were 2-6 right now, or 4-4 and losing games the way they have in the past, I think this would be over. I think this season has gotten his attention."

With an endless energy supply and a fearless attitude, Doran Grant treated his home like a playground when he was young. These days, the senior defensive back at St. Vincent-St. Mary (Akron, Ohio) runs wild on the gridiron instead. Photo By: RIKU+ANNA

Grant has been listening to Michael Jackson since he was 6 and lists ?Dirty Diana? as his favorite song by the King of Pop. ?He was just so smooth and a great performer,? says Grant. ?He?s the greatest entertainer of all time. His work ethic was ridiculous.?

Pre-Game Song: ?Cosmic Slop? by Funkadelic
Athlete: LeBron James
Sneaker: Air Force 1?s

As a kid, Doran Grant was a daredevil who gave his mother, Tonya, plenty of reasons to worry.

When he was 2, he regularly attempted to scale the fireplace and kitchen cabinets at his house. At 4, he started doing back flips in the backyard. Then at 7, he began imitating Superman by clearing his home?s 12-step staircase in a single leap with a towel tied around his neck like a cape.

He clearly had an endless amount of energy. He just needed to find a way to channel it ? other than working on his Michael Jackson dance moves, which he also loved to do as a kid ? before he hurt himself or drove his mom crazy. Enter organized sports.

Free Rivals - Top 10: Physical specimens

10) CB Doran Grant

School: Akron (Ohio) St. Vincent-St. Mary
Buzz: Grant is the smallest player to make this list but he looks much bigger than his listed 5-foot-10, 171 pounds. Grant is thickly muscled, especially in his upper body, and looks as if he could easily carry 200-plus pounds as a cornerback. Grant has the size of a small linebacker with the hips of a cornerback and packs weight tightly on his frame.

Free Rivals - Ask Mike: Tennessee losing ground

Grant and Michigan State

What do you think are the chances of Doran Grant signing with Michigan State? Is Ohio State going to be too hard to overcome or will the idea of walking in his father's footsteps push MSU over the edge?

- Chad from Detroit

I don't see it happening and if it does, it will be a surprise despite his family ties to the Spartans. According to almost every source I talk to, Ohio State has a large edge here and has for quite some time despite the terrific season Michigan State is having on the field. Grant is a fit for either program and I think he sees the field early either way, but it's been an uphill battle for the Spartans to overcome the early OSU lead.

SN 100 players have talent on and off the field - Sporting News

Sometimes college football fans get caught up in a prospect's height and weight, or his 40-yard dash time, or how many yards he rushed for his senior year in high school. Most importantly, they want to know where he's going to play college football.

But when asked, members of the Sporting News Top 100 said they want fans to know more about them; they don't just want to be a part of the meat market of recruiting. They want fans to see inside the helmet, so to speak.

Doran Grant, an uncommitted SN100 DB out of Akron (Ohio) who has Michigan State and Ohio State out in front of several top schools, wanted fans to know-Buckeyes, Spartans or any other-that he has a talent off the field, too.

"I'm a Michael Jackson impersonator," Grant told Sporting News. "Michael has been my favorite ever since I really started listening to music when I was 5. Billy Jean and Invincible were my favorites. I didn't take his death so well. It was kind of a shock and I didn't believe it."

We haven't had an outstanding voice since Cie Grant was crooning Carmen Ohio! Oh yeah, when you're not singing, you can be playing CB for the top ten Buckeyes.
