CB Devon Torrence (official thread)

I expected an offer real soon and this doesn't surprise me. I would expect a verbal very, very soon. I would think we bring him in thinking CB but he has some serious skill on offense for a possible WR as well. Either way he is a great pickup in the speed category.

Torrence is the real wild-card in this class. Tremendous physical talent, that probably could project at three positions (CB,WR,S) at the collegiate level. But the baseball issue is one that we, and especially the coaching staff, will all sweat out until the next draft. Of course, he still has to choose to be a Buckeye. :wink2:

more offer confirmation from the Canton Rep

TORRENCE GETS THE OFFER

Devon Torrence attended Ohio State’s senior advance camp last week. On his way home Friday, he received a text message from Buckeye Head Coach Jim Tressel.

Ohio State offered Torrence a football scholarship. OSU is thought to be Torrence’s top choice, and he likely will accept. However, Torrence could opt to go through the process and take his three official visits and accept during the fall. He would play baseball for the Buckeyes as well.

Has there been any expert speculation as to how high he may go in the MLB draft?

I thought I had read where he mentioned if we was drafted in the top 3 rounds he may opt for baseball.

How rare is it for a position player to be drafted this high out of HS?

2006 draft - high school non-pitchers selected by round (my quick count):

1 - 8
1s - 3
2 - 8
2s - 0
3 - 5

total = 24/106 or ~25%

I've heard (though seen nothing credible) that Torrence slipped a little in his junior year, compared to how he played as a sophomore. Not sure if that's true. But there aren't many players with the athletic ability of Torrence that can also play baseball, so I wouldn't be surprised to see someone take him early.

Singing bonuses in the 1st round are usually anywhere from $1 mil up to around $4 mil. 2nd round normally around $750k - $1 mil. 3rd round normally $400k - $500k.

In Torrence's case, I wouldn't be surprised to see him slip into a little lower round because of signability. It all depends on what he tells the scouts about his desire to play baseball over football. He might get drafted in the 5th round but get 2nd or 3rd round money.

He would be able to play football as well as baseball, but not all teams are okay with that, and a lot of players aren't either.

BSB $

6/25

Petty article where Devon says he did not have an offer on friday or saturday morning, but does have one now.

I'll take Bill Greene's word for this one. Nobody is closer to the situation than BG and this article is nothing more than sour grapes.

Torrence's upside is so high as a cornerback it's incredible. He has enough speed to cover almost any receiver, has great hips and change of direction, hits like a safety or linebacker, and has the height you need to shut down the bigger guys.

It'll be fun to watch him at OSU.
