The training wheels were snapped off with a vengeance for Devin Sanchez against Illinois.
With starting nickel Lorenzo Styles Jr. out vs. the Illini due to injury, the Buckeyes bumped regular outside cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. to the inside while Sanchez made his first career start in Mathews’ place. Against the No. 10 passing offense in yards per attempt in college football, no less.
There were some bumps along the way. But it was a great first experience for the five-star freshman out of Texas.
“Devin graded out well,” Ryan Day said on Tuesday. “Certainly it wasn't perfect, there was things he could do better. But for a young player to play with that type of confidence in that environment was a great sign. Early on, made a nice play on a PBU and then continued to compete the entire game. So we do need to continue to build depth.”

Isn't just the stem. Dev knows his help is inside and attack the negative break.

Football IQ and situational awareness has been raised even further since Patricia took over and it's obvious watching these players in their assignments.

AJ Hawk and that 2005 defense was 20 years ago. I'd like to think this group is doing them proud.

One key player to watch during Ohio State football spring practice

This player has a shot to become an underrated contributor this season if he has a strong spring.

Ohio State cornerback Devin Sanchez has a huge opportunity this spring

If Sanchez has a solid spring, he has a real shot to become the other outside cornerback opposite of Jermaine Mathews Jr.

Mathews Jr. is a really good player, and he needs someone with equal skills on the opposite side of the field. Sanchez certainly has the talent to do that.

Sanchez needs to show this spring that he has improved his technique so that he doesn't get beaten off the line of scrimmage as easily as he did last season. He let the receiver have too easy a release, and that hindered his ability to break up passes and force incompletions.

Matt Patricia loves the size and the speed that Sanchez has at the cornerback spot. It's all about him having some development as a second-year player in the program. Spring has a chance to really instill some confidence in him, especially going against a really good Ohio State offense.
