CB Denzel Burke (All B1G, All-American)

Denzel Burke Records Ohio State's First Takeaway of 2024 With Spectacular Interception Against Akron

Denzel Burke recorded Ohio State's first takeaway of the season in style.

In the second quarter of the Buckeyes' game against Akron, Burke dropped into zone coverage as Zips receiver Adrian Norton ran a curl route underneath him. Burke sprinted forward and ripped the ball from Norton's hands as he caught it for an interception.

Land-Grant Holy Land: The most egregious call by far was the targeting call and subsequent ejection of Denzel Burke late in the first quarter. Western Michigan running back Jaden Nixon ran towards the sideline and lowered his helmet into contact as he was hit by both Burke and Caleb Downs. There was no flag thrown on the play, but the booth buzzed down to call for a review, and Burke was then ejected for targeting despite there being no intentional helmet-to-helmet contact.

Just sayin': I was in the stadium and there was minimal reply and no commentary. What did the B1G announcers say about it and what was you take on the call?

Neither the announcers nor the network rules expert felt targeting was warranted by any of the 3 potential players being considered. That included a color commentator Michigan alumnus. The retroactive targeting call also negated the only real penalty called on Western Michigan the entire game.

Editing to add: my wife also pointed out that Burke was pushed by a Western Michigan player from behind.

Announcers and their in studio official all said it was side of the helmet contact which was not targeting. It certainly was not targeting in the spirit of the rule. This is the largest penalty and most inconsistently called rule - they need some better guidelines.

There are two things that are called targeting

One is where you hit them. Forcible contact to the helmet of a defenseless player. This half of the rule is there to protect the defenseless player

The other has only to do with the part of your body that you hit them with. Contact with the crown of your helmet, regardless where you hit them. This half of the rule is there to protect the player doing the hitting

Recall the targeting against Justin Fields by the Clemson LB in the playoffs? Crown of the helmet into Justin’s ribs. It was a textbook example of the second type of targeting, but ignorant Clemson fans lost their minds.

It was the second kind of targeting that Burke was charged with.

My only gripe is that the rule is enforced by people who never played the game, who are watching replays in slow motion. Football is a low-man-wins sport. When the ball carrier goes that low, for you to get as low, you can keep your head up with all the strength in your body, it still will look like your face is pointing mostly toward the ground. To be more specific, my biggest gripe is with fans who have never played the game who scream and cry about how players can’t do this simple thing. Such people are invariably those who’ve never played. If it’s so easy to keep your head up AND HAVE IT LOOK LIKE you’re keeping your head up (when you have to go as low as Burke did), you go out and demonstrate for us. Otherwise, shut all the way up

I have to be real here… I want to see a bit more from Burke. I know he has the INT but to me it seems like teams are avoiding Iggy more so than Burke.

You really forget how good our secondary is when teams think throwing at Burke is a good idea.
Akron was attacking Iggy and the LBs, with a bit of success. Of course, they have a great OC/HC. They just didn’t have the talent.

WMU didn’t attack anything because they couldn’t block anyone.

One of the most lopsided games of line play I’ve seen (both offense and defense).

I mean they aren’t attacking anyone overall lol… let’s see Burke compete with Iggy.

Denzel Burke Thought Targeting Penalty in Western Michigan Game Was “Bullcrap Call”

When Denzel Burke sat down for his interview session following Wednesday’s practice at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, the Ohio State cornerback initially told reporters that he wasn’t going to talk about the targeting call that got ejected from the Buckeyes’ most recent game against Western Michigan.

When a reporter asked Burke if it was hard not to say what he really wanted to say about the call, however, the always-honest senior opted to throw caution to the wind and say what was on his mind.

“It was a bullcrap call,” Burke said. “I really didn't understand it. And it's kind of been going around the country, really … It's kind of just getting out of hand. And then the fact that you're out the whole game and the player is not even hurt or anything like that, and I was kind of like the last one in. I guess I could see the perspective the refs were looking at. But yeah, it sucks.”

Burke was ejected from Ohio State’s 56-0 win over the Broncos late in the first quarter after officials determined he led with the crown of his helmet as he hit Western Michigan running back Jaden Nixon at the end of the run.
