CB Cameron Brown (Arlington Renegades)

“I want to develop as a player, as a leader,” Brown said Tuesday, the first time he’s addressed reporters since announcing his return to Ohio State for a fifth season on Dec. 16. “I feel like the leader role has been slowly growing on me. I really don't consider myself a leader yet, but eventually over time I think I'll get there.”

“I want to win the game,” Brown said. “I want to win the Rose Bowl. That's really a big thing for me. My freshman year I didn't get a chance to play in it, so this time is the first time I get to play, so I'm excited.”

Just sayin': IMHO, he made the right decision to return for 2022. A strong year in 2022 could elevate him to being drafted in 2023.

“Is anyone more overlooked on our team than Cam Brown?” the former OSU player asked. “It’s not like fans dog him, but you don’t hear them talk about him much. Or when they do, they’ll say he’s solid but won’t be surprised if he gets passed up by some younger guys. Here’s the thing though: Cam has always been a baller here. He looked great in camp and for the first two games of that 2020 season, then of course went down with the season-ending Achilles. Then last year – not even a full year removed from the injury – I thought he played very well overall. Especially considering the garbage scheme we had, the fact that Sevyn (Banks) went MIA and we had to thrust a true freshman (Denzel Burke) into a starting role. Granted, he played well, but I just think Cam Brown is going to surprise some folks this season.”

I think that is a really fair analysis. Cam may have initially been overlooked because of the injury, but when he is on the field I think he gets overlooked because he simply does his job and doesn't get beat often, kind of like the solid OL that is never mentioned because he is doing his job. I feel really comfortable with Burke and Brown at corner this year...the rest of the spots will shake out but if Cam is healthy, he is most definitely a guy we can rely on and look forward to as a core piece of this defense.

BROWN, JOHNSON SPLIT FIRST-TEAM REPS AT CORNERBACK
Two days after Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expressed concerns about the Buckeyes’ cornerback depth, we got a glimpse at why on Thursday.

Ohio State had only four scholarship cornerbacks on the field during team drills Thursday as sophomore Jordan Hancock did not practice at all due to his injury while freshman Ryan Turner was a limited participant. Redshirt freshman safety Jantzen Dunn, who has been cross-training at cornerback during camp, also did not participate in any full-speed drills on Thursday. Fifth-year senior Cameron Brown did not participate in the 7-on-7 portion of practice, though he was on the field during 11-on-11 work.

Day said after practice that Cameron Brown, who has battled injuries throughout his Ohio State career, remains on a “pitch count” in practices as he was during the spring. As for Hancock, Turner and Dunn, Day said he does not expect any of the cornerbacks’ injuries to be long-term injuries, though he acknowledged that cornerback depth is one of his biggest concerns right now.

“It's top three,” Day said. “Yeah, we need to make sure we’re building depth there. We certainly have some candidates there. Some guys are bumped and bruised, but hopefully we’ll get them back soon and keep working.”

A total of six NFL draft prospects from Ohio State are currently set to participate in pre-draft all-star games. Offensive tackle Dawand Jones and defensive end Zach Harrison have both accepted invitations to the Senior Bowl while cornerback Cameron Brown and defensive tackle Taron Vincent have accepted invitations to the East-West Shrine Bowl. Defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste also accepted an invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl but has since entered the transfer portal, indicating he plans to play another year of college football at another school rather than enter the 2023 NFL draft.

Six former Ohio State football players are on the initial rosters for the United Football League.

The UFL held its initial player dispersal draft on Friday, allowing each of the eight teams in the new spring league for professional football – resulting from the merger of the XFL and the USFL – to protect 42 players from their 2023 rosters while adding up to 20 players from the rosters of teams within their previous league that will not be a part of the new league.
The initial rosters selected by each team in that draft were announced Monday, and those rosters include six former Ohio State football players:
  • CB Cameron Brown, Arlington Renegades
  • TE Marcus Baugh, Birmingham Stallions
  • WR Binjimen Victor, Birmingham Stallions
  • CB Gareon Conley, D.C. Defenders
  • DT Taron Vincent, San Antonio Brahmas
  • DT Antwuan Jackson, St. Louis Battlehawks
