Gooden is a really good offensive PF especially since Brown doesn't design any plays for him. He has also become a much better rebounder as well. I just don't know if Gooden is capable of becoming a good enough defensive PF for what the Cavs need out of that position. Personally I think they will let him walk after this season and try to pick up a cheaper defensive minded PF.

I dont know about letting him walk unless he demands too much money. I also am a big fan of keeping the core of the team around for a couple years, just to form chemistry, and one would think that Drew is big part of that.

I think if Drew can get stronger he could be a force on the Defensive end.

I think they'll offer Gooden a contract, but by "let him walk" I mean like how the Indians let Thome walk. I don't think the Cavs will offer him as much as some other teams will. If he feels loyal to Cleveland and wants to continue to play here they will probably want him to take less money than he will be offered elsewhere. If Gooden wants to win he should stay with the Cavs because any teams that will offer him more money are probably going to be bottom dwellers. Hopefully he'll remember that the Cavs took a chance on him and let him start when no other teams that he has played for have. Lebron makes everyone else better than they actually are.

Yeah I know that I would take less money and play with LBJ.

I'm not sure exactly how NBA contracts work, but I think the hometown team can offer the player an extra year on the contract. That might help if say [bottom dwelling team] will offer Gooden 4 years for 30 mil and the Cavs could offer him 5 years for 32 million. Of course from my perspective what is 5 million really worth when you are talking about the difference between 30 and 35 million?

Yeah that one year is for a restricted free agent I believe.

I don't think Redd was restricted last year and the Bucks were able to offer him an extra year. The Wizards came back to Hughes with a bigger contract with an extra year, but he was pissed at them for lowballing their first offer so he went to the Cavs anyway. I think that was a rule they put in to help all the teams keep the players they have. That is one of the reasons Lebron will be staying in Cleveland for a long time.

Ok I really am not that sure, but I think that is how the nfl works, when a guy is not under contract but he is restricted free agent means that you get to give him a year contract.

Who would the Bulls trade for Gooden?

Injuries force Ferry to add rookie guard
Oklahoma State product will fill in with Hughes, Newble, Jackson ailing
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND - Decimated by injuries at the wing position, the Cavaliers took action to thicken their ranks Monday.

The team signed rookie Stephen Graham to a 10-day contract shortly before it took on the Milwaukee Bucks. The former Oklahoma State player has had stints with the Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls this season.

Once the deepest spot on the team, the Cavs have lost three of their shooting guards/small forwards. Larry Hughes has been out for five weeks with a broken finger. Ira Newble has been out for a week with what the team has termed a facial abscess. It was learned Sunday that Luke Jackson had fractured his left wrist in Saturday's loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Jackson will have surgery soon and will then miss six to eight weeks, which will nearly knock him out for the rest of the regular season.

``It is very disappointing,'' Cavs coach Mike Brown said of the latest loss. ``We have a couple guys injured. It was a good time for Luke because he was going to get some minutes.''

Graham is the lessor known player in his family, his twin brother, Joey, was a first-round draft pick of the Toronto Raptors last summer. Stephen has bounced around trying to make an NBA team and had played nine games with the Bulls and Rockets, averaging 2.4 points and 1.1 rebounds.

The 6-foot-6 wing is known as a solid defender who can handle the ball a little but mostly relies on hustle. He worked out with the Cavs last month, and they saved his number.

``He's really worked on his shooting and is improved,'' Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry said. ``He'll be able to help us now with his athelticism and the way he plays hard.''

Graham had been playing with the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Sky Force of the CBA, where he averaged 21 points in 16 games. He didn't get the call from the Cavs until around midnight Sunday and hopped on a 6 a.m. flight to make it into town.

``I'm hoping this will be a good fit for me,'' Graham said. ``I'm optimistic. I'm going to do my best and hope I can stick.''

With all the injuries Graham might get some playing time, but Brown said he'll use Damon Jones more at shooting guard and Donyell Marshall some at small forward.

Gooden rumors swirl

Several media outlets reported that the Cavs and Bulls were in talks about a trade involving Drew Gooden on Monday. League insiders said the Cavs have made calls around the league to gauge Gooden's value but they are not in any active trade thoughts. Gooden, a restricted free agent at season's end, is the Cavs' most tradeable asset, and rumors will likely continue to emerge until the trade deadline later this month.

Newble still out

Newble spent a seventh night Monday in the Cleveland Clinic. Brown said he was improved, and that his fever had come down. He was suffering from a migraine headache, a bad tooth and an infection in his nose that has spread.

``They want to be very cautious, it came up all of the sudden,'' Brown said. ``They did not think he'd have to be in the hospital so many days.''

Hey I was right on the Restricted free agent.

I wonder if Azubukie is out there, I believe he played real well in the summer league for the cavs or maybe I am mistaking him for someone else.

To put a good spin on the injuries, when the guys return their legs arent going to be dead, b/c they have missed some games, but to go the opposite way the guys that are playing are goign to have to pick up more minutes.

I figured instead of hijacking Dials thread I would place this in here.

If the Cavs are thinking about dealing Gooden, while I am not sure what they woud look for in return, but I think we need a strong PF that can rebound and play D to go along with Z.

I would really love to land a guy like Josh Boone next year in the draft, but they have him going tenth, but they have Baby shaq going below our pick. I wouldnt be very happy with a first round SG. Either PG or PF.

We have Hughes locked up at SG and we have Sasha and Newble as backups. No reason to waste a first rounder on a position where we have nice depth.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

I agree the draft should be PG or a physical PF/C (I think that's called an FC like Varejao). It would be nice if there was a Steve Nash in the draft this season. I like Luke Jackson, but looking at performance to date I wish the Cavs had drafted Jameer Nelson instead.

The Gooden to Bulls rumor was for pg Chris Duhon.

Just like Gooden will always be mainly an offensive player, Wild Thing will always be mainly a defensive player. They seem like the perfect complement
for the team.

There is no way Duhon has the same value as Gooden.

As for Nelson, I was screaming for them to draft Nelson 2 months b4 the draft. I was actally suprised he dropped to number 20 or so. Not sure on teh exact number.

Orlando really cleaned up in that draft with Howard and Nelson.

Didn't they also draft Varejao in the second round that year before trading him to the Cavs? Someone's doing their job in that front office. Too bad for them they traded Wild Thing. :p IMO Varejao would be a better starting center for them than Battie.

Well Battie has some experience over Varejao, so I would say at this stage it would be a push, but based on potential I would go with WIld Thing.
