Cavs 2010-11 season (official thread)

i think the cavs can offer more for jawad then miami can...and i would think jawad would get more PT with us but i guess i could be wrong about that since miami's depth isnt that deep...and im glad were going after joey graham who is the better of the graham brothers...i would hate to see us get steven again

but as we know sometimes those two things don't mean squat:tongue2:

Jawad is a restricted free agent, so he has no choice in the matter really. Other teams can sign him to an offer sheet, and the Cavs have right of first refusal to match the offer and retain him. The Cavs don't need to offer more, they would just need to offer the same amount and even then Jawad doesn't get to choose between the two offers - he'd automatically be a Cav if they match the offer sheet. If he leaves, it means he's likely being overpaid. I doubt the Heat are going to extend themselves to get a guy like Jawad. That kind of talk is just LeBron being a dick and twisting the knife.

I don't think the Heat have the cap space to overpay for anyone else. If they want Jawad I'll take another first round pick or two to let him walk.

Do they have any first round picks left?

Yes. They didn't have a pick this year (it went to the Wizards in the Jamison trade) but they have all of their future first rounders, and three of Miami's.

2011 second round draft pick from Oklahoma City
Oklahoma City's own 2011 2nd round pick to Cleveland via Miami (top 40 protected in the 2011 Draft). If Oklahoma City's own 2011 2nd round pick is in the top 40 picks, then Oklahoma City's obligations to Cleveland shall be extinguished. [Miami ? Oklahoma City, 6/24/2010 and then Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2012 first round draft pick from Miami
Cleveland has the right to swap their own 2012 1st round pick with Miami's own 1st round pick. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2012 second round draft pick from New Orleans
New Orleans' own 2012 2nd round pick to Cleveland via Miami. [Miami - New Orleans, 6/25/2009 and then Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2013 first round draft pick from Miami
Miami's own 2013 1st round draft pick to Cleveland (top-10 protected in the 2013 Draft, top-10 protected in 2014, and unprotected in the 2015 Draft.) [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2013 second round draft pick from Minnesota
Minnesota's own 2013 2nd round pick to Cleveland. [Cleveland - Minnesota, 7/26/2010

2015 first round draft pick from Miami
Miami's own 1st round draft pick to Cleveland in the ?First Allowable Draft? (top 10 protected until the 2017 draft at which it will be unprotected in the 2017 draft). The First Allowable draft shall be the draft that occurs two years following the year in which Miami satisfies its first obligation to convey a future first round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

Debits
No picks owed
Source: RealGM

EDIT - I thought you meant the Cavs, not the Heat. Here's where the Heat stand - it looks like their next first round picks would be in 2014 & 2016...

Debits

2011 first round draft pick to Toronto
Miami’s own 2011 1st round pick to Toronto. [Miami - Toronto, 7/9/2010]

2011 second round draft pick to L.A. Lakers
Miami's own 2011 2nd round pick to the L.A. Lakers. [L.A. Lakers - Miami, 6/25/2009]

2012 first round draft pick to Cleveland
Cleveland has the right to swap their own 2012 1st round pick with Miami's own 1st round pick. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2012 second round draft pick to New Jersey
Miami's own 2012 2nd round pick to New Jersey [Miami - New Jersey, 1/05/2010]

2013 first round draft pick to Cleveland
Miami's own 2013 1st round draft pick to Cleveland (top-10 protected in the 2013 Draft, top-10 protected in 2014, and unprotected in the 2015 Draft.) [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

2015 first round draft pick to Cleveland
Miami's own 1st round draft pick to Cleveland in the “First Allowable Draft” (top 10 protected until the 2017 draft at which it will be unprotected in the 2017 draft). The First Allowable draft shall be the draft that occurs two years following the year in which Miami satisfies its first obligation to convey a future first round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]

Edit again... it looks like the Heat will have a first rounder in 2012 - the Cavs have the right to swap their first rounder with the Heat that year, so they'll each have a pick it's just a matter of position.

On a side note, the NBA is a fucking mess.

Just wanted to throw my .02 in on the Cavs off-season without LeBron and the future.
  • I loved the trade for Ramon Sessions. If we're going up-tempo I love a guy who can get to the basket and play 2G next to Mo. Granted, we'll probably have the WORST defensive back-court in the NBA. At least they'll be exciting in the open court. It really is a bonus, if we're truly going up-tempo, to have 2 guys who can lead the break...which leads me to my next point.

  • Mo Williams is going to love playing for Byron Scott in this offense. Byron has already stated he told Mo "he needs to step up". Mo in an offense where he can take shots and create for himself will make him a better player. I expect 18-20 ppg and 6 assists out of him. I think playing next to Sessions will free up Mo's game as well b/c Ramon can handle being the distributor. That's what Sessions is good at.

  • The SF position is a mess right now for the Cavs. Of all positions on this team, this is EASILY the weakest. I know some have speculated Jamison at SF, even myself at one point, but it doesn't sound realistic. Scott would like Jamison as a 6th man off the bench, and it sounds like they don't believe Jamison has the tools to be an everyday SF. That means, as the roster is currently constructed, you're starting Jamario Moon. Ouch. Jamario isn't a starting SF on any team, and his shooting ability next to Sessions is problematic. I'm hoping for the Sign and Trade with the Hawks that brings Marvin Williams on board.

  • I'm legitimately excited to see our front court in Byron Scott's offense. Andy is one of the best energy/effort guys in the league, and he has to be licking his chops for the upcoming season. He FINALLY has a chance to be an everyday starter and show what he is capable of. In terms of our second best player during the Mrs. Wade years, Andy may have been the guy. And he wasn't a starter. Let's see what he can do over 82 games at 35 minutes.
  • JJ Hickson is about to become a 20/10 guy. And he's athletic as all get out. Paired with Andy, I don't think you could be much more excited for a front court getting ready to run.
Above all else, I CANNOT get behind analysts/fans saying this team should tank for the future. We have 15 draft picks over the next 5 years. We have assets to get into the lottery even if we are an above .500 squad. In 3 years we will have a huge amount of cap space and most likely a good nucleus of players. Draft young talent to come onto a team that knows how to win. My biggest concern is running a team out to get slaughtered 60 times and losing the fan base. This team has the opportunity to become a National fan-favorite. LeBron just [censored] all over himself, and casual fans would love to see Cleveland get their asses off the mat and make a run at the playoffs. But if this team tanks, the seats are empty, the players mail it in, you might even see Gilbert get money conscious. It could become a Seattle Supersonics situation. This teams needs to scrap, claw, get [censored]ed and win. The city would love it.

Play to win, but smart under the cap. Use the accumulated draft picks to work our way into the lottery, and bring young players onto a team that needs a superstar to get over the hump.

As an FYI, with the current roster, I think this team has just enough to get into the playoffs. If they can add a Marvin Williams at the SF position, I think they're in. And I hope they do swing a trade for him. A line-up of:

Mo, Sessions, Marvin Williams, Andy, Hickson is not bad. This roster is built for Scott's system. While you may not see a ton of flash on paper, the right system can go a very long way. And bringing Jamison off of the bench as a stretch PF at the 4 would be very solid. This team would really have A LOT of depth.

Mo/Boobie
Sessions/Parker/Eyenga
Williams/Moon/J.Williams
Hickson/Jamison/Powe/Samuels
Andy/Hollins

And [censored] LeBron.

At least Delonte won't need a hotel in Miami or Cleveland. Good for him.

That's all.

I don't think anybody is suggesting that they should just tank but on the other hand, looking at this roster and comparing it with other rosters in the division I don't think a couple of years in the lottery is a bad idea.

It wouldn't be a bad idea, but we also have the luxury of making the playoffs, and still acquiring lottery picks. We couldn't even use 15 picks in 5 years if we wanted too...Trust that the Cavs can package second round picks with other assets to get into the lottery for the next 3 years.

The Cavs are a SF away from having a very respectable starting 5. On paper it may look average at best, but system can be more important than specific players. I'm excited to see Cleveland push for the playoffs, and add future pieces through trades and the draft. I don't have any delusions of the free agent market being kind. But I really like some of the pieces that are already in the fold when you add Byron Scott to the mix(Mo, Andy, Hickson).

It's sad #6 sold out to Miami to be Mrs. Wade. Byron Scott's offensive philosophy could have taken his offensive production to another level. Pat Riley forgot about Showtime as soon as he left L.A. The Knicks and Miami both turned into mauling/defensive teams under him. LeBron will play at a Mike Brown pace while having to share the ball with his daddy and RuPaul. I hope they suck.

Great post. I agree with all of it. I'm also excited to see an intangible element: the hunger to shine without the star. What we have is a team now. With the right motivations, they could make some noise. It just may take 2-3 years.
