Trading the Wallace contract would be much better than working a buyout. Say, they agree to a buyout for $3.5MM. After Andy opts out and they drop Sasha for $1.5MM, they're looking at a cap around $51.6MM. Since the Cap is expected to be reduced to $57.3MM, that would leave them about 5.5MM to spend. I'm not sure but I don't think you can add the MLE and the Bi-yearly to that 5.5 number. Maybe someone here knows for sure.

I'm not sure where everyone thinks the Cavs will find an athletic big man. That's going to be a pretty tough proposition. Look around the league and you'll find very few athletic big men. As long as Howard is around, this team will need, not so much athletic, but a bulky big man, like Perkins, that can guard Howard most of the time without getting help. That should be a priority, since Howard, Nelson, Pietrus and Lewis will all be in Orlando for a while.

One guy that fits that profile is Zaza Pachulia. He's a free agent and probably could be had with the MLE or less. He's only 25 and is big at 6' 11" and 275 pounds. He's strong enough not to get pushed around by Howard and plays with a mean streak. Z. Also he's a pretty good rebounder and is a tough defender. According to Hoopshype, he plays pretty good with his back to the basket. Plus a bonus is that Garnett doesn't like him.

As far a guys available in trades, 2 names I've heard are Samuel Dalembert and Gerald Wallace. Wallace certainly fits the "athletic player" mold. As far as Dalembert, there have been some rumblings about Eddie Jordan possibly wanting to part with him. Given the choice though, I'd rather SIGN Pachulia and trade Wallace and/or Sasha for something else.

I'm just trying to name names that the team has a realistic chance of landing this offseason. Toronto is not going to move Bosh before the trading deadline. Amare is not coming to Cleveland, when they would rather get rid of Shaq. Boozer is not coming (duh).

He's one of those gritty players that you love on your team, but hate on anyone else's. Only averaged 6.3 points and 5.7 boards, but he'd be a nice guy to bring off the bench if Andy left.

... and is strong enough and mean enough to keep Howard busy by himself, thereby letting the other 4 guys stick with those cherry-pickin' 3 point Orlando shooters.

Villanueva to Cavs?

As we've discussed at length in this space, the Milwaukee [URL="http://www.fannation.com/tags/show_tag/4555"]Bucks[/URL] have a difficult choice facing them this summer. They have two key free agents in Charlie Villanueva and Ramon Sessions, and one of them is most likely going to be a casualty of the salary cap. The fact that the Bucks are looking very closely at every point guard available in the draft would make you think they're leaning towards letting Sessions walk, but it's far too early to know. In truth, the Bucks themselves haven't made the decision yet, and are holding out hope that they can find a way to keep both. That said, plenty of teams are starting to think about what Villanueva would look like in their uniforms. One of them might be the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Meh. Good perimeter scorer, might be an interesting potential pickup if Andy's contract demands become an issue as anticipated.

Yeah, wouldn't be "flashy", but if Andy's contract becomes a headache and they need to look elsewhere, this wouldn't be a bad move. He can score in bunches (averaged over 16 ppg in about 26 mpg), has good length, and is a decent defender.

No you can't add to the MLE, as it is seperate from both the salary cap and the Bi- annual.

One name I've heard is Tyson Chandler, he would be able to play Howard effectively. Also, he was dumped by NO, but OKC turned it down after his physicals. He could be had for Ben's contract.

Talk between the Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers of a trade that would have Shaquille O'Neal playing with LeBron James next season is "heating up again," according to a report in The Arizona Republic.
The trade rumor involving O'Neal, Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic may sound practical for Phoenix and dynamic for Cleveland and has been confirmed to ESPN.com by a team executive, but another source close to the situation said "there's nothing going on" between the two teams.
O'Neal, 37, will make $20 million next season in the final year of his current deal, while Wallace will make $14 million in the last year of his contract and Pavlovic $4.9 million with only $1.5 million guaranteed.
The salary swap is close enough to make the trade work under the salary-cap guidelines, and the Suns would save $10 million in the transaction -- $4.5 million in salary and $5.5 million in luxury-tax payments.
They could save even more money if Wallace takes a buyout, a possibility that was raised when Wallace said he was considering retirement after the Cavs' Eastern Conference finals loss to the Orlando Magic.
If the Suns acquired him and bought out his contract for less than face value, they could lower their actual expenditures, although the full amount would still count toward their luxury-tax total.
Multiple sources close to the situation confirmed to ESPN.com in late February that a deal sending O'Neal to the Cavaliers had been discussed.
Wallace and Pavlovic were offered to the Suns for O'Neal as part of the Cavs' well-chronicled quests to add one more big man for the playoffs and show James they were serious about an NBA championship.

Would help against Dwight Howard and would also give the Cavs a legit post up threat, but he is getting up there in age and his pick and roll defense would be suspect at best. Sometimes I feel like this is a trade the media just really wants to happen for the storylines it would present (Shaq vs. Superman) or possibly in the finals (Kobe vs. Shaq).

Shaq has stated his desire to play with LeBron, so that fuels it as well. Shaq has 1 year left on his deal, so it still allows Cleveland to give to max deals the summer of 2010. It'd make sense, IMO. One last hurrah for Shaq, and a legit big man who can body up Howard for Cleveland. If you hold onto Z, you have the best reserve center in the league. They can essentially split those guys minutes, and both would hopefully be fresh come playoffs.

Shaq for Wallace and Pavs would be okay for me depending on the draft. We still need some perimeter length and long term solutions underneath. If Z and Shaq are here that is a one or two year plan at best. Same goes for Camby. Wallace and Pavs were not part of the opposing teams game plan except ignore Wallace, at least with Shaq there is additional thought.

Good post, my only other concern would be that Wallace and Pavlovic are probably the Cavs 2 biggest trading pieces. Is there anyone else out there that they could get that could be better than Shaq. It also has to be considered that Shaq could possibly clog up some driving lanes for Lebron seeing as how he isn't an outside player like Z, and he is not mobile at all (even less so than when he played with Dwayne Wade).
