Selfish loss isn't as good as team win Unhappy Hughes says strange things
Published on Tuesday, Mar 04, 2008

There are times when the words of athletes make you wonder when you left the planet.
When exactly was it that you entered some kind of separate reality, filled with flying bunnies, talking rocks and dancing trees?
Larry Hughes provided one of those moments this weekend.
You remember Hughes. He's the former Cavs player who signed for a boatload of money a few years ago and then was unhappy playing on the same team as LeBron James, a team that a year ago played in the NBA Finals.
Which is bizarre enough in itself.
Anyway, Hughes was traded to the Chicago Bulls recently for Ben Wallace and Joe Smith, and on Sunday, Hughes revealed why he plays the game.
''I play to enjoy myself,'' he said.
Note the word ''myself.''

He makes it look easy LeBron doesn't need to practice those amazing shots to make them
By Brian Windhorst
Beacon Journal sportswriter

CLEVELAND: With one Chicago Bulls defender in front of him, one to the right and not far behind, LeBron James jumped and floated in the air to the left.
Arms flew into his field of vision and he drew contact on the right side of his body. As he started down he cradled the ball in his left hand and flipped it into the air as he continued to fall and swing to the left. The arc, angle and pressure were perfect.
The ball kissed the glass and flew through the hoop to give the Cavaliers the lead for good with three minutes left in the fourth quarter Sunday.
''The difficult shots might look difficult, but they're not to me,'' James said.
That's not star-athlete speak; it's true. Not only does James find finishing around the basket easy, he doesn't practice such shots.
Those off-balance touch shots, the scoops with hands in his face, the high-speed banks from the sides where the ball is loaded with the proper spin? All done on the fly.

Ben Wallace helping LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

Wallace has won championship, looks to show he has plenty left to help LeBron,Cavs get one
Tuesday, March 04, 2008Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Like so many times before, Ben Wallace saw an opportunity and attacked. Early in his debut with the Cavaliers on Feb. 24, Wallace ran to midcourt and harassed Memphis forward Hakim Warrick into a turnover that led to an alley-oop pass and dunk by LeBron James.
Wallace was not finished.
In the fourth quarter, with his back to the ball, Wallace covered Memphis guard Kyle Lowry like a blanket. The smaller and supposedly quicker Lowry could not shake Wallace loose. The heady play resulted in a five-second call for a turnover.

Those defensive plays were either brief flashbacks to what helped Wallace become a four-time Defensive Player of the Year or an answer to questions on how much Wallace, 33, has left.
Cavs management and their fans certainly hope Wallace has not lost a step, especially since Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak, Joe Smith and Delonte West joined the team as part of an 11-player, three-team trade just before the Feb. 21 trade deadline. Wallace is the key piece in the Cavs' quest for a second consecutive trip consecutive to the NBA Finals.

Cavs' Smith could finally be in line for NBA title

Wednesday, March 05, 2008Branson Wright
Plain Dealer Reporter
Joe Smith has chased the basketball Holy Grail ever since he got his first taste in the summer of 1992 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The underrated Boo Williams AAU team of Virginia, led by Allen Iverson and Smith, faced the highly rated Charlotte Royals of North Carolina led by Jerry Stackhouse, Jeff McInnis and Jeff Capel. In the end, Iverson scored 25 points and Smith had 19 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Boo Williams squad to a three-point victory.
"No one really knew what kind of talent was in Virginia," Smith said. "Our state is connected to North Carolina and we wanted to show them we could play, too. The game was for bragging rights."

Smith has been unable to brag since.

Cavaliers are still putting it all together
But newcomers aid defensive effort
Wednesday, March 5, 2008

REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND Sometime before the NBA Playoffs start next month, the Cavaliers could emerge as the deepest they've been in some time.

Head Coach Mike Brown, though, is spending no time thinking about what the Cavs could become. His sole concern is the here and now, where they are trying to introduce four new players to their system while dealing with injuries to some key holdovers.

"Right now, we're two steps behind so we have to concentrate in the now," Brown said over the weekend when the Cavs won a pair of home games.

The Cavs head into New York for a 7:30 game tonight against the Knicks having won three of five games with their new-look lineup. But they are a long way from being the type of team they need to be for sustained success in the playoffs.

"Trying to be patient," is their mindset, said All-Star LeBron James, as they put together a team on the run after trading away six players in an 11-player, three-team trade two weeks ago.

Cavs know the one play that works
UPDATE: 11:11 AM, Tuesday, March 4, 2008
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CLEVELAND They still don't know all the plays.

But the four new Cavaliers have quickly learned one play that works best: Get it to LeBron James.

"He makes it easy," forward Joe Smith said of playing alongside the All-Star. "He's going to make the defense adjust according to how he's going."

James is going quite well these days. Monday, he won his second straight award as Eastern Conference Player of the Month, taking the honor for February.

He then opened up March by taking over Sunday's win over the Bulls.

Eight points, three assists and three rebounds by James over the final 9:55 led the Cavs to their fourth straight home win.

James began that closing stretch by making an impact as a passer, finding Smith for back-to-back jumpers. That's not surprising since the 6-foot-8 James led the conference in assists during February.

"He's one of the most unselfish guys of his stature that I've played with, besides Kevin Garnett," Smith said.

Smith came to the Cavs in a three-team trade nearly two weeks ago that also brought Wally Szczerbiak, Ben Wallace and Delonte West to Cleveland. Smith's ability to knock down mid-range shots and Szczerbiak's 3-point shooting make them dangerous players on the floor with James.

NBA roundup
Cavs get time to work in new guys

The Magic's Maurice Evans, right, soars in for a dunk over the Raptors' Jamario Moon during the first half.

Cavaliers coach Mike Brown called an offensive set during a game against Chicago on Sunday, and a confused LeBron James glared back at the sideline. "They don't know that play yet," James said.
Brown changed the play to something his four new players would be familiar with.
Cleveland hasn't looked sharp since the Feb. 21 trade that added point guard Delonte West and forwards Ben Wallace, Wally Szczerbiak and Joe Smith. But the Cavs have had two full days of practice, the most since the trade, and should be more in sync tonight when they play the Knicks in New York.

What an amazing shot by LBJ...Fading to his left from about 5 feet over half court...:yow1:

Also LBJ with 20 pts, 4 boards, 6 asts, and 2 steals...O yeah and that is just one half... :yow1:

Letting the Knicks hang around, hopefully we come out strong in the second half and put them away...
