Canal Barge Vacation

We're thinking of taking two weeks in September of 2012 to go barging in France. Anyone on here been there, done that? Four of us and we think we'd like to do the drive-it-yourself style. Thinking of Canal d' Midi, but other options are open. Love to hear from anyone who has done this.

ive been boating/jetskiing on a canal in upstate ny... if that counts, likely not anywhere near the same idea. i also just read that ny will open up the canals/toe paths to snowmobiles starting potentially next year (though require membership in a snowmobile club approved by the state-in order to ensure you have massive umbrella over you/your sled)

have not done that, but have been to France. People not nearly as snobby as made out to be.

I know someone who did a French canal barge trip and thought it was wonderful!
