Can we customize the FAQ?

bkochmc

Assistant Coach
This question is more for the powers at be for designing BP...

As I was looking at Mili's thread about the Reputation Chart he created to inform everyone about the new rep system and made me wonder if the FAQ in the top toolbars is customizable. I would imagine it is... The FAQ could then house tables like what Mili compiled, how to link images, how certain functions of BP work, search shortcuts (like using AND, OR,...), and other things of the like. I'd be interested in helping out with making that more informative so that when someone has one of those questions that gets asked alot we can just point them to the FAQ.

Any thoughts?

if so, it might also be nice to add a newbie section, that can explain the rules about whining about dings, posting in what location, complaining with a valid solution as well, etc. Some things are covered elsewhere, but if a newbie could be pointed to an obvious section he didn't bother to read, it would be better. Not a vital need by any means tho.

I agree it isn't a vital need... just something I was pondering. Clarity and others are doing an awesome job on this site and I know they have their hands full doing other more important stuff. If the FAQ is ever worked on I'll offer my services to help compile any reference material for it.

Many, many, many moons ago, I spent about 80 hours putting together a massive FAQ for Bucknuts. They never used it, and I lost my copy in the lightning strike last year.

I am all for a comprehensive FAQ covering both the site, and what we talk about on here. Everything from what a dark green 'ruby' is worth, to what 'greyshirt' means. I don't have any of my old stuff, but it included everything about NLOID, lodging and parking information for visiting fans on gameday, the "who's who" of the online community (Porentas, Schear, Larrabee, Rea, etc.), a glossary (for both osu/football terms and general internet stuff), and so on.

If one or more of you (as a group) want to collaberatively start putting something like this together, I would enthusiastically plug it into the existing FAQ area.

grad and I were just discussing this topic and we'll be starting a thread in the open discussion soon. It will be comprehensive and open to all members suggestions and comments. We'll start simple with forum descriptions and rules/regulations for each forum and continue to branch out from there. Look for a thread late today or tomorrow.

Hope your move goes well Clarity.

That's exactly what I was thinking... start small, get all the basics of the site down then go from there.

0.1 Preamble:
This FAQ is by no means meant to serve as a replacement for conversation on our forums. Is it meant to serve as a place where new and old posters alike can go (or be pointed) to find answers to the most commonly asked questions. Particularly during the season, the sheer volume of posters and threads can become overwhelming. Unless you’re checking multiple times per day, terrific threads with important information can fall by the wayside in a sea of questions like “What does ‘IMO’ mean? Or where are the skull sessions? That’s what this is for. We don’t expect to be able to get rid of all the “newbie” questions this way, but we hope to cut down the number asked, and in the process provide the best answers possible. What follows is a work in progress, put together by posters just like you. Throughout these FAQs we have used the masculine pronouns (he, his, him) rather than feminine pronouns (she, her, hers). We recognize that women participate in NCAA sanctioned athletics - but nobody really cares. (Just funnin ladies, just funnin)

0.2 Bucknuts Overview
One of the “big three” OSU fans sites, Bucknuts has become a home on the web to a large and active messageboard community. We’re all crazy to some extent here, but share a love for anything and everything Buckeye.

4.3.1 - Recruiting Visits
Official Visit

(Working on it)

Unofficial Visit
An unofficial visit to a member institution by a prospective student-athlete is a visit made at the prospect’s own expense. The provision of any expenses or entertainment by the institution or representatives of its athletics interests shall require the visit to become an official visit, except for the following:
(a) The institution may provide complimentary admissions to an on-campus athletics event in which the institution’s intercollegiate athletics team competes, and
(b) The institution may provide transportation to the prospect, when accompanied by an institutional staff member, only to view off-campus practice and competition sites and other institutional facilities located within a 30-mile radius of the institution’s campus, but the institution may not provide transportation to attend one of the institution’s home athletics events (on or off campus) during the unofficial visit.

4.3.2 - Definition of Recruiting Periods

4.3.2.1 - Contact Period
A contact period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.

4.3.2.1.1 - Contact
A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parents, relatives or legal guardian(s) and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged or that takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s educational institution or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect or the prospect’s high-school, preparatory school, two-year college or all-star team shall be considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs.

4.3.2.2 - Evaluation Period
An evaluation period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability of prospects. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospect during an evaluation period.

4.3.2.3 - Quiet Period
A quiet period is that period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the member institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.

4.3.2.4 - Dead Period
A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospects to the institution’s campus. The provision of complimentary admissions to a prospect during a dead period is prohibited, except as provided in Bylaw 13.8.2.5 for a prospect who visits an institution as part of a group. During such a dead period, a coaching staff member may not serve as a speaker at or attend a meeting or banquet at which prospects are in attendance, except as provided in Bylaw 13.1.9.1, and may not visit the prospects’ educational institutions. It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone prospects during such a dead period.

4.3.3 - Timing of Recruiting Periods

(Working on it – this would be the calendar showing which period is in effect at what time)

4.3.4 - Recruit Qualifiers

4.3.4.1 - Full Qualifier

(As defined under NCAA rule 14.3.1.1) A qualifier is defined as one who is a high-school graduate and who presented the following academic qualifications:
(a) A minimum cumulative grade-point average as specified in the “Initial Eligibility” Index below (based on a maximum 4.000) in a successfully completed core curriculum of at least 13 academic courses, including the following:

English 4 years

Mathematics (Algebra I or higher) 2 years

Natural or physical science (including at least one
laboratory course if offered by the high school) 2 years

Additional courses in English, mathematics,
or natural or physical science 1 year

Social science 2 years

Additional academic courses
[in any of the above areas or foreign language,
computer science, philosophy or nondoctrinal religion
(e.g., comparative religion) courses] 2 years

(b) A minimum combined score on the SAT verbal and math sections or a minimum sum score on the ACT as specified in the Initial Eligibility Index below. The required SAT or ACT score must be achieved under national testing conditions on a national testing date [i.e., no residual (campus) testing or regional testing dates].

Initial-Eligibility Index
Freshmen may establish eligibility using the following eligibility index:
Core GPA SAT Sum ACT
2.5& UP 820 68

4.3.4.2 - Partial Qualifier
A partial qualifier is a student who does not meet the requirements for a qualifier but who, at the time of graduation from high school, presents the following core-curriculum grade-point average and the corresponding ACT or SAT score:
Core GPA SAT Sum ACT
2.750 & above 720 59

2.600 780 64
2.575 790 65
2.550 800 66
2.525 810 67

4.3.5 - Redshirt
A Student-Athlete can participate in four years of competition within his/her sport. They have five years in which to use the four years of athletic eligibility. If the Athlete chooses to use all five years to complete their four years of athletic eligibility, the year in which they do not compete in athletic competition is considered to be their “Redshirt” year. During this Redshirt year the athlete is entitled to participate in all events an athlete is entitled to, such as practice, meals, scholarship benefits, etc. The only restriction upon the athlete is that they can not compete in game competition. ANY participation within a game is considered to be a violation of the Redshirt rule (one play in football, one second in Basketball, etc.) and will nullify that year as a Redshirt year and by default cause it to be counted as a year of competition (one of the four allowed by the athlete).

4.3.5.1 Medical Redshirt
A medical redshirt is a redshirt year where the athlete cannot compete due medical reasons. Under some circumstances an athlete can compete to a limited extent before becoming injured and still apply for a redshirt year and not have that year counted against his eligibility. If the athlete has competed at all he must apply to the NCAA for a medical waiver. Whether the redshirt is granted is up to the NCAA, but is based on factors that include the amount of time he competed and the nature and extent of the injury.

4.3.5.2 Sixth Year Medical Redshirt
Under certain circumstances an athlete can extend his eligibility to six years. This occurs if the athlete has already redshirted for one year and is then injured and does not compete for a second year. In such cases an appeal can be made to the NCAA for a second redshirt year based on medical grounds. An athlete cannot apply for a regular redshirt after receiving a medical redshirt, nor can an athlete receive two medical redshirts. Tyson Walter (and hoepfull Ivan Douglas) are examples of 6th year medical redshirts.

4.3.6 - Grayshirt
4.3.6.1 What is a Grayshirt?
The term Grayshirt is a relatively new one and will not be found anywhere within the NCAA Regulations. This term refers to a perspective recruit that during his recruitment pledges his allegiance (verbals) to a school, but does not sign a Letter of Intent with that school and does not immediately receive a scholarship. They defer their athletic career (their five-year period in which to complete four years of competition) by one year, but not necessarily their academic career. They cannot participate in any events that are limited to the “team”, such as practice, during the football season, and are not considered to be on the team in any official way. They can be given a scholarship at anytime after football season is complete for the year that should have been their first under normal circumstances, providing a scholarship is available. At that time they would be considered to be in the next recruiting class. Think of this as “Deferred Admissions” to the football team. A player can enroll at the school and begin classes immediately, but must do so by his own means (no football scholarship).......

4.3.6.2 Further clarification;
As I have encountered the term one of its primary purposes is to delay the start of the five year clock. That clock starts once the athlete enrolls full time, whether they participate in athletics or not. I would argue a true greyshirt could not enroll as a full time student. In the case of Todd Boeckman, for example, it seems the purpose of greyshirting him is not to save a schollie, but to create seperation between himself and Smith/Zwick. This wont happen if he enrolls full time in the fall.

4.3.7 Letters of Intent and Verbals
4.3.7.1 What is a Letter of Intent (LOI)?
The LOI was implemented to introduce ‘certainty’ to the recruiting process. As much as we complain about kids changing their minds on signing day, imagine having them change their minds all the way up to the start of fall practice. That is what could happen before the adoption of the LOI. A Letter of Intent (or National Letter of Intent – NLI) is an agreement between an athlete and an academic institution whereby 1) the athlete agrees to enroll at the institution in the fall and attend the institution for one full year, and 2) the institution agrees to provide a scholarship for one full year. Once signed the agreement is binding on both parties. The LOI applies to students entering school full time for the first time.

4.3.7.2 What is the ‘signing period’ for LOIs?
LOIs can only be signed during a designated period of time. There are different signing periods for different sports, including two signing periods for basketball. For football the period begins the first Wednesday in February and ends on April 1st. An LOI must be signed during the signing period and within 14 days of receipt.

4.3.7.3. What is National Signing Day?
National Signing Day (NSD) is the FIRST day that an athlete can sign an LOI (but not the only day they can be signed).

4.3.7.4 In addition to the athlete, who else must sign an LOI?
If the athlete is under 21 his parent or legal guardian must also sign the LOI. The Athletic Director of the institution must sign the LOI on behalf of the institution (not the coach of any particular sport).

4.3.7.5. Who can be present when an LOI is signed?
A representative of the institution cannot be present when the LOI is signed off campus. However, the athlete can sign an LOI in the presence of representatives from the institution if the signing takes place during an official visit that occurs during the legal signing period.

4.3.7.6 Must an athlete sign an LOI in order to attend an institution?
No. An athlete is not required to sign an LOI. They can simply enroll at the institution in the fall provided the instutituion and the athlete agree that this shall take place. The advantage of signing an LOI for both parties is that it brings an end to the recruiting process.

4.3.7.7 Do walk-ons sign an LOI?
No, a walk-on may not sign an LOI. An LOI is only signed where financial aid is involved.

4.3.7.8 What if the athlete does not qualify?
The institution is released from the requirements of the LOI if the student is not certified by the NCAA Clearinghouse as a Qualifier or Partial Qualifier by the first day of classes for the fall term.

4.3.7.9 Are LOIs administered by the NCAA?
The NLI program is not administered by the NCAA and operates independently of NCAA rules and enforcement. The NLI program is voluntarily entered into by its members (which include all Division 1A schools).

4.3.7.10 What if the head coach leaves the school after the LOI is signed?
The LOI is an agreement with the institution, not the coach. If a coach leaves the school the LOI is still binding.

4.3.7.11 Must an LOI be signed every year?
The LOI is only signed for the first academic year and is in effect for only one year. For subsequent years the institution must notify the athlete if the financial aid is to be renewed.

4.3.7.12 How does an athlete satisfy the terms of the LOI?
The athlete must complete the academic year, not just the playing season to satisfy the LOI.

4.3.7.13 What if the athlete does not satisfy the terms of the LOI?
If the athlete does not satisfy the terms of the LOI the ‘basic penalty’ is that they must sit out two years while in residence at another institution and will lose two years of eligibility. The athlete can practice at another facility and receive aid, but cannot compete. If the Athletic Director at the institution grants a Qualified Release Agreement the athlete is release from the terms of the LOI. However, the athlete must still sit out one year in residence at a second institution without participating in athletic competition in any sport and will lose one year of eligibility. Remember, the LOI only applies the first year, so this rule does not apply to transfers after the initial LOI is satisfied.
