Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

It is becoming more and more clear the NCAA only acts when forced to by public outcry. Otherwise it's all see no evil hear no evil speak no evil.
Second to last paragraph. Those people refused to cooperate with them and they could not substantiate anything.

As to Cam, if there are no witnesses, no bank records, IRS records, and phone and e-mail records do not substantiate that money was given the dad, what the [censored] do you want them to do? Sanction Auburn because the dad tried to sell him to Mississippi State? I agree that it makes sense that Auburn paid the dad, as he went to Auburn after allegedly saying he had to. But if they cannot find a money trial, they cannot find it.

Dammit, all of Bama nation has been trying to link them for a year, and they have more resources than the NCAA. It is just possible that the dumb ass dad realized somehow that it was too risky, that a little bird told him or Auburn that Miss State would squeal, and that for reasons that have NOTHING to do with morality, and EVERYTHING to do with caginess and self interest, they stopped the $$$ transaction for one freaking year until Cam could get his signing $$$.

That is not at all impossible. And if you will not talk, then the bad stuff does not get revealed. See the Auburn guys not talking. See the Pryor refusal to meet with the NCAA any more. See Bush refusing.

I have no doubt that the guys who were on TV saying they got paid got paid. But if they refuse to cooperate, then until you get the NCAA some subpoena power, you will get what you get. And if they get subpoena power, we all better hold our ankles.

Here's what bothers me and my tin foil hat.

1) If you self report, you're effed. What kind of message is that to send, for either party? "We usually can't find anything, so we'd like you to do it for us." As others have said, there's no reason anyone should ever self report. Ever. Ohio State's compliance office are suckers for exposing themselves to the media [Mark May] storm over the past almost a year. (only partially kidding... I want to do things the right way, and am glad that we're trying)

B) This went away because ESPN didn't cover it. Please compare the coverage between OSU (again, much of it self inflicted due to the self report thing) and Auburn's scandals/rumors etc. When the four letter network chooses to start making schools switch conferences (Big East/ACC), think of ways to bypass NCAA guidelines (Longhorn Network and HS football), or shape the national perspective of incidents (Mike Leech/Cam Newton) and it works... that's when the NCAA has lost all credibility.

The SEC wins again. I wonder what would be if sEcSPN tried to set up camp down there like they tried in Columbus. I won't hold my breath.

OSU already is since they cooperated (mostly). No reason everyone else shouldn't be, too. :groove3:

you don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Both governing bodies made that abundantly clear.

can't wait for Brent to be given the next script to read at an Auburn game. the NC game reflection on his departure from UF was particularly comical.

I lost all faith last year when the NCAA wouldn't touch Nick Fairley after crap like this.

At least they maintained their reputation on their way out. For a little while, folks might have confused them for an entity that enforced the rules strictly but became obsolete when the super conferences were formed.

now any policing of OSU, USC, etc will no longer sully their proud tradition.

:p The non-Buckeye world is screaming because of the almost assured no FTM or LOIC. One man's rape is another man's bad motel soft core porn.

The cooperation is why you were not hammered. I've never believed for one minute that your guys did not know it was wrong to sell their stuff. How they reacted after being specifically told not to makes me believe it more. But the NCAA bought that excuse, and got the number of game ineligible ban that was what most thought they deserved (even though letting them play in the Sugar Bowl was viewed as tOSU getting off too light by almost everyone. But that is equally the NCAA and B1G fault).

Your cooperation is why even when your coach lied the NCAA did not allege FTM or LOIC. Your cooperation was HUGE in the outcome. Your cooperation is damn impressive, and a real reason for everyone to think highly of your school. Good Lord, throwing Tress under the bus was not an easy thing to do. Are there programs that would shred the e-mails from the attorney? You bet your ass. If you had, and someone talked, and it was later found out that you hid them? Y'all are going bye-bye for a decade if they found that. You are playing with 70 guys and not seeing bowls. And don't think it would not have come out later. The higher ups could black mail each other with that info, and the lower level staffer that found the e-mail could hold the whole program hostage.

There is NO way to keep that secret. So you self reported. That is not why you were punished. You were punished because rules were broken. You were treated lightly (well...will be) because you self reported. Self reporting is why you will get through this in no time. Not self reporting is why USC will be fucked for a decade.

More allegations surfaced in March when the four former Auburn players raised more claims of wrongdoing in the program.

Raven Gray, Stanley McCover, Chaz Ramsey and Troy Reddick all told HBO?s ?Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel? that they received thousands of dollars while being recruited by or playing for the Tigers.

They said the cash was delivered in book bags, envelopes and even handshakes. Ramsey played at Auburn most recently, in the 2007 season.

When FOUR former players accuse their alma mater of paying them how much corroboration do you need?

Apparantly you need ESPN to ram it down everyone's throat on an infinite "news" loop in order for the NCAA to actually open their eyes when they step on campus.

ankles.

Funny, I don't recall stakeouts of star players at their apartments being reported around Auburn. You know, the kind of witch hunt that was going on up here. But don't let that get in the way of the conclusion that Auburn and OSU were scrutinized equally.

Yay. Facebook, cell phone cameras and buddies.

Meanwhile ESPN has FOIA requests and an avalanche of tabloid reporting/pressure.

I'm guessing their Auburn FOIA request was closer to the laughably small Oregon request than the ESPN demand & lawsuit for every document in the history of Ohio State athletics.

So - you are saying the NCAA made stakeouts?

Talk about the NCAA or talk about the press. I disagree with you on one and agree on the other. Mixing them up confuses things.
