And machines now can use up to 4GB of RAM. It takes but 1GB for Vista to run smoothly.

I know it takes 1GB but with a lot of the other stuff that runs in the background, that seems to be quite a bit of RAM for an operating system.

Especially when it just seems to be a "dressed up" version of XP.

Vista Basic will look like XP warmed over. It runs completely different.

Vista Home Premium is a major step up from XP in appearance and function.

How's the function much better?

And who gives a shit about appearance, XP is fine.

Vista is Microsoft's latest attempt to control everything you do with computers and the internet. Just as the programs from internet tools like yahoo, msn, aol insert more and more into your computer it is all about tying up your resources and finally your spending.
If they control more then they make more.
Stick with xp.

BTW the computer that i worked on this weekend - 256MB of RAM - but it was a 2.6ghz processor

You think that's bad? Mine is a 5-year-old Dell with 256MB RAM and a 1.7GHz Pentium 4. The only time it bogs down is when my youngest logs out (switch user) with a shit-load of windows still open...

Mine is a 5year old 1.6GHz with 512. Its slower than molasses. I did a full system recovery about 12 months ago, maybe less. And its slow again.
