call from my aunt - "i'm getting strange errors when i start my computer"

iambrutus

Screw Blue
so i fire up her PC and she gets an error that says "Cannot access Desktop - access denied" - the computer started up and just sat with an empty desktop after you clicked OK - so i created a new user account and was able to login just fine. then i looked at the "desktop" folder for that user and it was empty but still would not allow me to access it. I have no clue what she was doing, (neither did she) but she told me that she was "cleaning up some files that didn't look like they needed to be there"

this kids is the reason that some people should not have a computer.

I do all the work on my mother's computer. She at least knows enough to know that she doesn't know shit about computers and won't touch anything that doesn't do daily on it.

This Friday, I'me heading in to set up her new PC with Vista on it. Wish me luck.

you are a brave man!

BTW the computer that i worked on this weekend - 256MB of RAM - but it was a 2.6ghz processor

Who would set up a PC with only 256MB of RAM? The processor is plenty fast enough, but you might as well be running a 90Mhz Pentium with that little RAM.

Not yet. My PC with Vista on it is sitting in her office. Mommy bought me a new PC.

I'm pathetic. :(
I'm not sure why you would want to put it on your mother's computer. I have heard there are problems with drivers and problems with compatibility. There might be some problems that would be difficult for a novice computer user to handle.

Its already on her new machine. I'm transferring her business from the old PC to the new one.

The PC she'd using now is beyond hope. She just decided to get a new one right as Vista was released. I've checked the programs and periphials she uses and so far (knock on wood) none have had problems on Vista in the manner in which she uses them. Her printers and scanner have drivers released already and her accounting software has only had issues on server based applications.

She should be fine. Either way, I'm leaving myself four days to work on it.

I bought something at Best Buy yesterday and they asked me to take a two question survey on Vista. "Have you heard of it and what do you think of it."

Said I heard of it but have no desire to switch to it b/c I'm not a gamer and am perfectly happy with XP.

Also told them I heard it requires a ton of RAM to operate.

But what we call "a ton of RAM" today will be squat in two years. The 64-bit versions of Vista will be able to support a machine with 256GB of RAM.
