Game Thread Cal Bears at tOSU - Sat, Sep 15, Noon ABC

Yikes! That was pretty ugly and frustrating. But the defense stepped up with a stop when it had to. And the offense stepped up and made plays when the game was on the line.
A learning experience? :tongue2:
Oh,and all those sacks!

Whew.

Well, this team is mediocre right now. There really isn't any other way to put it.

The LBs and the D line simply disappear at times. Coach Meyer gave the 2 seconds speech over the summer and then you have guys (Etienne Sabino leaps to mind) that quit playing before the whistle and then watch as the RB breaks one. 3 carries for 156 yards? That guy for Heisman!! The offense is really struggling and Coach Meyer really isn't kidding when he says that there are a dearth of play makers on offense. Braxton is one, but he looked lost today. The O line had some serious break downs and the D was outplayed today by a bad Cal team.

But I'll take the win and hopefully the players learn from today's mistakes.

Thought the Dline was solid today. Four guys aren't going to be able to stuff the run though. You need your LBs and Safeties to fill holes, take proper pursuit angles, and get the man down. Neither unit is even average at doing that right now. Worst part is that the talent behind those starters are pretty much freshman.. so we're going to have this issue most the season IMO

Really liked the stats for Jordan Hall's return. Not bad for only having a few days of practice - here's hoping he gets better for UAB and B1G play.

Otherwise, there is no way this team is going to go to Michigan State and beat Sparty.. Looks like a 9-3 or 8-4 team unless they fix things. On the other hand, if they ever figured out the fundementals (tackling, no dropped passes), this team could beat a lot of people.

Fixing tackling and some questionable schemes (as Spielman indicated on air) on defense should go a long way. 35 points on offense should be enough to put an opponent like Cal away at THE Ohio State University.

:oh:

Just got back from the game so here are my observations:
Sat behind possibly the douchiest buckeyes fan that I've ever seen, but I won't focus on that.
I think it comes down to fundamentals with this D. Gang tackling seemed rare as did wrapping up.
Braxton made some nice plays but also the boneheaded interception.
Roby made some plays and Shazier layer the wood on a few plays.
Devin Smith makes the big TD plays but dropped I think two balls on third down.
Hall looked good.
D line didn't show up at times but they also made some big plays near the end.
As a student I yelled my ass off almost the entire game. It was loudish during the game but it got really loud after we scored our last TD.
It was a frustrating game but also very exciting.

Braxton's play was subpar today but yet had over 300 yards of offense and 5 tds, and the majority of it came from basically 2 quarters. Think of him when he fully understands the offense...

Braxton played great bud.

He was 50% on his passes with 250 yards, 4 TDs and only 1 INT. He didn't take many sacks and tried his best to make reads and throw it away.

He also went for 75 yards on the ground with a 6 yard average and the only "rusher" to score a touchdown. He put his body on the line when they needed him.

It wasn't Braxton today. It was the dropped passes on key third downs. Smith stepped up with 145 and 2 TD's but it doesn't excuse the drops.

The Buckeye front defensive line came to play, bringing the rush we all cried for. They did their job, the secondary was as wishy-washy as normal. Making picks, getting sacks, laying the wood. However giving up big plays on first downs, they were bailed out by 3 bad kicks by Cal.

Bottom Line: Braxton did his job. They need to iron out the secondary and figure out who the starting RB is going to be. The team needs leaders.

PS. Where was the passes to the TEs?

I thought Hall looked good in a shaking the rust off performance. However, I'm not sure he is the back for the inside zone read. Getting Hyde back to fill that role will make Hall that much more effective, doing what he does well.

This. He has a big place in this offense. But he shouldn't be carrying the ENTIRE load at RB.

Repped, couldn't agree more.

Braxton did great, many drops. The defensive line was all over Maynard and I thought they played as well as they could've. We didn't rotate many guys and I thought Nate Williams was out there too much, but we needed him.

The Linebackers and Secondary though. My god. I'm beginning to think that we just don't have the type of players at Saftey that we will need in the future to really make this defense Elite. I like Bryant's hitting ability but that's about it. Barnett reminds me of Anderson Russel, we are missing that Coleman or Hines type of Saftey that we've always had up until last year.

Also could this be a product of coaching as well? I think most of us could agree that while we aren't there yet on offense we are doing much much better than last year. However, this year with better talent and more returning we have the same issues as last years defense. Can't tackle, poor pursuit, and too many big plays against. Getting Herman has helped improve our offense, and we have Fickell back as main DC and the problems continue on D. I sure hope Fick gets the problems fixed this year because 2 years in a row now is a trend.

IMO, Braxton played okay. Yes, there were some drops, but he also uncorked some bad throws, and missed a few open guys. And that interception was horrible. It's to be expected, though. He's still learning and getting comfortable in a brand new offense. He still put up excellent numbers, and that speaks to his potential.
