I haven't used it, as I haven't cut the cord yet, but check out the ChannelMaster DVR+ and see if it fits what you're looking for. Its supposed to integrate with Sling and no subscription fees.So can someone recommend a standalone DVR solution? We have minimal PC power at home...a worthless laptop my wife uses for work and iPads. We are looking at going with an HD antenna (the RCA ultra thin comes recommended and picks up the largest number of channels in our area it seems) combined with our Apple TV and Sling TV. My wife's only concern is not being able to record shows, although we talked about being able to use a family member's cable to login to possibly watch recently aired shows on some of the apps like NBC, CBS, etc. But we'd still like the ability to record a show or a sporting event when we want to.
It seems like Tablo is an option but I'm a little confused. Will it record stuff over Sling TV as well as over-the-air antenna broadcasts? My understanding is that the 2-Tuner would still require a $5/month or $50/annual subscription...is that correct?
That's kinda where I want to be. Especially with a 4-month-old we don't want to come home and just sit in front of the TV, and we do that too much now. Sometimes it almost feels like work to try and keep up with everything we're recording. The biggest thing you'll notice is how to do addictions change after you cancel cable. We've replaced some of that with Netflix and Hulu, but you lose the obligation to keep up with shows. You go back to watching things because you want to do so.
Be careful on the on demand stuff. They generally only keep 5 episodes alive online at a timeThere's currently 5 or 6 shows that I watch via recordings, most of which could be accessed via on demand services now. The rest mostly comes from either netflix or amazon prime. I'd much rather watch a season straight through over a few days instead of having to wait a week to watch a new episode.
