OK. So I was walking thru WallyWorld Friday (Only place in town where I Live) and a 65" Roku TV that I kind of had my eye on was on sale for $250 less than it has been. It's now sitting in my living room. Was GREAT watching the game on it! I've used steaming services like Netflix, Hulu etc. thru other devices, but seeing what this thing is capable of, I'm seriously looking at dumping my TV cable package, going internet only and picking up a couple more Rokus for my other TVs. I have a very good HD antenna I can use for local channels (not currently connected) and was wondering a) anybody have experience with the Roku TVs, and b) suggestions on the best streaming service to use. It has Sling TV, Youtube TV and PS Vue built into it, all of course for their monthly cost. With the increase in cost for stand alone internet (Spectrum is my only option) is it worth it to dump my TV package or not. Currently have the "Gold" package with my total monthly bill around $190.

We have a couple of Rokus. One that I connect to the primary TV so that everything is run through the amp. A second Roku stick like USB dongle thing that is connected to the TV in our workout room.

We also have DTV so I've never tried / considered dumping the DTV for a game. Not because I don't want to... or wouldn't consider cutting the cord... but more because I'm lazy. I should try to go a month or two to see what I would miss from DTV if we went 100% streaming services.

My 2 year Verizon contract ended a month or so ago, and the price went up. I looked at cutting for a min but didn't really have the time to really research it, so I called in to renew for 2 more painful years. I was jumping from 50 to 100 Mbps, with a small price decrease. I figured it'd be OK to bite the bullet for 2 more years.

LOL JUST KIDDING. They changed the plan name I was on from Sports & More (not offered any more) to Sports & News. The difference? Sports & News doesn't have the Nickelodeon and Disney channels that my kid will kill me for, along with MTV or Comedy Central. I, of course, didn't notice this when I clicked to agree to the new 2 years. So I had to call back in and bitch.

To get the sports channels I was used to AND the other ones, I'd have to pay $35 more per month. That's not gonna happen. I want to undo the contract, get my old channels back, and just not be on a contract and pay a little bit more each month (while I research which cable cutting option I want). "Oh, I'm sorry we can't revert back to a package that no longer exists".

So now my option is to cancel and eat the full 2 year early termination, or find a package that has at least ESPN and BTN, plus the kid channels. There isn't a cheaper option that has those things plus Comedy Central for whatever reason. Whatever. Give me the ESPNs plus kid stuff. Hang up. Turn on the TV to see what's on. Oh look.....Kingsman is playing on FX.

Now I don't get FX or FXX.

I’ll just chime in again and say that I am really digging Vue.
Yeah, I've been checking out trials of the different services, and PS Vue has really impressed me. Good selection of plans, all my local stations included, excellent picture quality and audio. I've been running it through my Roku TV and have Roku express devices on two others. Everything works great on all of them. I think I'm about ready to pull the trigger on dumping my Spectrum TV package and going that route. Even with the modest increase in internet only service, and the price of my streaming services, I'm gonna be able to cut about $90 a month off my cable bill.

I did the trial for Vue a couple years ago, right when Sony had their hack and their networks went down. Scared me into thinking what if it happens during a Buckeye game. I should've looked into it again. :smash:

On a trial for Hulu with Live, and it was great for The Game Saturday.

Worth noting that local channels aren’t available in every location. So it’s possible that Vue isn’t the right thing for you unless you can get over the air signal for local channels. I get over the air for local so that means I don’t care what Vue offers for that.

Yeah, I saw where that depends on location. Fortunately up here in NW Ohio, it includes all four of the major network local stations from Toledo. Thats a HUGE plus for me since I wouldn't have to reinstall and rewire for my OTA antenna. (took it all down a couple years ago, still have it though)

Started with Hulu Live at the beginning of this football season and I’ve been satisfied. It includes all the local channels, so I can dvr anything. Hulu provides the ability to add OSU football and basketball to a favorites list and it automatically records all games. Occasionally when watching live I’ll get some glitchy internet stuff but nothing that’s made me regret getting rid of Dish. Only thing I don’t like is that I have to watch commercials on dvr. Hulu does offer a commercial free upgrade for $12/mo or something like that.

That right there is a huge feature. With my random schedule, I remember to record the game about 5% of the time before Saturday morning, and many of the major TV providers deleted their functionality to remotely record something :roll1:

I just cancelled my TV service for the year but I may have to look into this.

I have generally been pleased with WiFiing(not ideal) DirecTV/Now on a Roku Stick this football season. I'm sticking with it even though there are minor software issues which I believe they will solve given time. I haven't missed a game and I get all the local channels. Picture looks great also. I get 20 hrs of "cloud" recording. The football games get shorted because of the current recording set up but I have been able to record the shortened version and rewatch anything I may have missed.
