Too soon old, too late smart
Maybe because oil money isn't one-time, but on-going. Just pump a bit longer/harder, and voila. Black gold. And, the UT alums aren't shy about funding what they want/need in a Texas team. 'Dallas' was a soap opera, certainly, but actually depicted many truths about the oil scene. Anyway, point being, Texas can/will buy/rent any player that they believe will give them a better team.
