Nick Mangold knows new contract won't come from Jets until after season, begrudgingly accepts stance

CORTLAND - Mark Sanchez was lost at the line of scrimmage, confused by the defense staring back at him that afternoon in Oakland last season, when he leaned on his righthand man for help.

"What do you got, Nicky?" the quarterback asked his center. "What do you want?"

The response was nearly imperceptible.

Nick Mangold, ready to snap the ball with his right hand, lifted his left hand, quickly pointed to his left and tilted his head in the same direction.

CORTLAND ? Nick Mangold is anxiously awaiting the first episode of HBO's "Hard Knocks," which airs Wednesday night at 10.

"I'm trying to get an early copy," Mangold cracked. "They won't give it to me. Something about I'd probably put it on Twitter. I don't know. It's kind of like sausage. You don't want to see it being made. But you love eating it."

Should he be the star?

"Of course," the All-Pro center said. "What kind of show will it be without me? Seriously."

Nick Mangold's long-term extension with the Jets is expected to be announced as early as Monday or Tuesday.

The next of the Jets? young starters to sign a long-term deal with the team? It looks to be Nick Mangold.

The Jets and the All-Pro center are closing in on a long-term contract extension that could be announced as early as tomorrow or Tuesday, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for the team or Mangold.

Terms of the deal are still being finalized, but it is expected to be a mega-deal topping the five-year, $37.5 million contract St. Louis' Jason Brown -- the league's highest-paid center -- signed last year.

Sources: Nick Mangold deal close

With the Darrelle Revis holdout dominating headlines for three weeks, the New York Jets quietly have been negotiating a long-term extension for All-Pro center Nick Mangold. The two sides are close to a new deal that likely will make Mangold the highest-paid center in the league, league sources told ESPN.com.

Mangold, reached Sunday night at his home in New Jersey, declined to comment, saying he wanted to speak with his agent Monday before discussing it publicly. But a source close to Mangold said, "It should be done any day now."

A Jets spokesman would not confirm the deal.

Nick Mangold was purposely ?stone-faced? when he met with reporters earlier today.

?I will let you know,? the All-Pro center said about signing a long-term deal with the Jets, ?and we?ll have a big party.?

Mangold has not signed yet, but he and the Jets reached agreement on a new, seven-year deal worth $55 million today, according to someone with direct knowledge of the details of the contract.

That person requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak for Mangold or the team.

The amount of guaranteed money was still being negotiated but is expected to be more than the $20 million Rams center Jason Brown received last year. Brown set the previous mark for centers in the league with the five-year, $37.5 million contract he signed last year.

Great to see how this one is working out.

Nick stayed with the team, kept working, didn't whine, didn't hold out, and it looks like he's getting what he earned.

And the way his career is going, he's on track to end up in Canton.

I've gotta say that I have to give him a ton of props here. I'd like to think that I'd have it in me to do what he did -- IMHO the right thing... Glad to see that it's all working out.

Now happy and well-paid, Nick Mangold is the Jets' anti-Revis
By Jon Saraceno, USA TODAY

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. ? As dominating at their respective positions as these two New York Jets teammates are, Nick Mangold never was going to be a Darrelle Revis in training camp.

No holdout. Not his style.

Using a player's chief negotiating leverage would not have fit the fourth-year center's personality. Refusing to put finances ahead of team, Mangold reported to camp and eventually signed a seven-year extension that included a $22.5 million guarantee.

He is the NFL's best-paid center.

"It is not me ? it is not who I am, it's not what I do," said the former first-round draft choice from Ohio State, the 29th overall player selected in 2006.

The bearded 26-year-old center with the flowing golden locks said he weighed his options last spring and concluded, "I could probably use the work."

"I know there is a left guard battle going on, (and) hopefully I can lend a helping hand," says the two-time Pro Bowl center, referencing the battle between second-year pro Matt Slauson and rookie Vladimir Ducasse to replace Alan Faneca.

Mangold's teammates eventually noticed, even as Revis, the Jets' Pro Bowl cornerback, continued his protracted freeze with management.

"He treated it like a professional," says Jets guard Brandon Moore. "He could have easily made a stink about it. A lot of guys didn't even know it was an issue. I think that is a testament of how professional he is."

Many people have asked Nick Mangold about his balky right shoulder in the last two weeks, and the Jets? affable center with the quirky sense of humor appreciates the concern, even if much of it is only from reporters. ?I?m running out of thank-you cards,? Mangold deadpanned after a recent practice.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. ? Many people have asked Nick Mangold about his balky right shoulder in the last two weeks, and the Jets? affable center with the quirky sense of humor appreciates the concern, even if much of it is only from reporters.

?I?m running out of thank-you cards,? Mangold deadpanned after a recent practice.

No matter. Mangold?s continued top-notch play despite his injury illustrates one of the hallmarks of the Jets? offensive line so far in 2010: attention to detail no matter what adversity they?re facing.

Despite having a new starter ? second-year pro Matt Slauson at left guard to go with Mangold and veterans Brandon Moore (right guard), Damien Woody (right tackle) and D?Brickashaw Ferguson (left tackle), the Jets are ranked ninth in the NFL in rushing offense through three games. It?s not the lofty heights of their No.1 ranking last season, but they?ll take it.

Also encouraging was that after surrendering five sacks in their first two games, the Jets allowed none in their win at Miami last week. The Jets (2-1) will visit winless Buffalo today. The Bills? defense has only four sacks and is allowing 4.2 yards per rush.

Mangold is at the center of the Jets? attack in more ways than one. Because of his sprained shoulder, he missed a series against New England, plus two days of practice before the Jets beat Miami.

?Nothing surprises me with Nick,? offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. ?I know he fought through it. He, Damien and Brandon, they?re kind of the leaders of that group. When you?re the center, so much goes on and you?re in so much control. He just puts everyone at ease being in there. [Backup] Robert [Turner] did a great job stepping in there the game before, but having Nick in there is great for everybody. Nothing surprises us about what he does, but it was a great performance.?

Mangold ?knows how to play the game and he knows how to fight through adversity,? Ferguson said of Mangold?s performance against the Dolphins. ?I give him a lot of credit because that?s not an easy thing to do.?

?It?s getting better,? Mangold said when asked about his shoulder. ?Obviously it?s not great.?

He added philosophically, ?when it stops hurting, it?ll stop hurting. Unless it?s something serious, a little pain never hurt anybody. [Playing through it] is just one of those things you do.?

A Connoisseur at Center, Mangold Loves the Grape

Nick Mangold stores more than 200 bottles reserved for special occasions in his makeshift wine cellar.

Mangold traveled to Napa Valley during the Jets? bye week to explore his interest in wine. So there stood perhaps the best center in pro football, inside Vineyard 29, swishing and swirling, an oak tree of a man with an interest in oak tones.

At closing time, Mangold and his wife, Jenny, sat on the patio, overlooking the valley, sharing a bottle of cabernet. He had struck employees at the winery the same way he strikes teammates.

?He seemed really curious,? said Holly Anderson, the winery?s national sales director. ?He really wanted to see the whole process, to connect with and understand it.?

As the Jets readied for Sunday?s game against Denver, teammates described Mangold, 26, with words rarely associated with offensive linemen. These included cerebral, complex and intricate, although sarcastic ? ?incredibly sarcastic, amazingly sarcastic? guard Matt Slauson said ? won the most votes.

Mangold?s approach to life is in his Twitter biography, where he writes, ?I try to find the humor in everything while promoting the virtues of being manly.? Thus his hobbies include grilling, golf, fine dining, video games, the Dave Matthews Band and classic cars.

Yet Mangold also loves his wine. Sure to go over well inside the locker room was this statement: ?I?m a cabernet guy. I?ve enjoyed blends. When you start mixing different things, like when you get a cab sav and then a cab franc together with a little merlot, it?s excellent.?

Drawing a line between old friends
Pals and rivals from pee-wees to the pros, Mangold and Hawk face off Sunday

Jets center Nick Mangold and Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk grew up less than five miles apart.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- When New York Jets center Nick Mangold crouches into his stance Sunday and scans the Green Bay Packers' defense, he will see part of his childhood.

A few yards away from Mangold will be A.J. Hawk, the Packers' left inside linebacker. They go as far back as two football players can go, back to playgrounds and pee-wee leagues. Back to Centerville, Ohio, circa 1995, and the Centerville Elks, their sixth-grade team.

Mangold was the big kid in the neighborhood and the best lineman, and Hawk was a man-among-boys linebacker, crazy intense. Some things don't change.

They grew up less than five miles apart in a small town near Dayton, lived together for four years at Ohio State, became first-round draft picks in 2006 and served as groomsmen in each other's weddings. Their parents are friends, too, and occasionally bump into each other around Centerville.

Now they prepare for the Battle of Centerville, Part II. Mangold owns a 1-0 lead, as the Jets routed the Packers in '06. The rematch figures to have a different feel because Hawk's role has changed. Green Bay has switched to a 3-4 defense, creating the potential for more head-to-head confrontations between the lifelong friends.

"It'll be weird beforehand," Mangold said, "but it'll be nice afterward."
