Many people have asked Nick Mangold about his balky right shoulder in the last two weeks, and the Jets? affable center with the quirky sense of humor appreciates the concern, even if much of it is only from reporters. ?I?m running out of thank-you cards,? Mangold deadpanned after a recent practice.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. ? Many people have asked Nick Mangold about his balky right shoulder in the last two weeks, and the Jets? affable center with the quirky sense of humor appreciates the concern, even if much of it is only from reporters.
?I?m running out of thank-you cards,? Mangold deadpanned after a recent practice.
No matter. Mangold?s continued top-notch play despite his injury illustrates one of the hallmarks of the Jets? offensive line so far in 2010: attention to detail no matter what adversity they?re facing.
Despite having a new starter ? second-year pro Matt Slauson at left guard to go with Mangold and veterans Brandon Moore (right guard), Damien Woody (right tackle) and D?Brickashaw Ferguson (left tackle), the Jets are ranked ninth in the NFL in rushing offense through three games. It?s not the lofty heights of their No.1 ranking last season, but they?ll take it.
Also encouraging was that after surrendering five sacks in their first two games, the Jets allowed none in their win at Miami last week. The Jets (2-1) will visit winless Buffalo today. The Bills? defense has only four sacks and is allowing 4.2 yards per rush.
Mangold is at the center of the Jets? attack in more ways than one. Because of his sprained shoulder, he missed a series against New England, plus two days of practice before the Jets beat Miami.
?Nothing surprises me with Nick,? offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said. ?I know he fought through it. He, Damien and Brandon, they?re kind of the leaders of that group. When you?re the center, so much goes on and you?re in so much control. He just puts everyone at ease being in there. [Backup] Robert [Turner] did a great job stepping in there the game before, but having Nick in there is great for everybody. Nothing surprises us about what he does, but it was a great performance.?
Mangold ?knows how to play the game and he knows how to fight through adversity,? Ferguson said of Mangold?s performance against the Dolphins. ?I give him a lot of credit because that?s not an easy thing to do.?
?It?s getting better,? Mangold said when asked about his shoulder. ?Obviously it?s not great.?
He added philosophically, ?when it stops hurting, it?ll stop hurting. Unless it?s something serious, a little pain never hurt anybody. [Playing through it] is just one of those things you do.?
