Nick Mangold wants to talk moneyJets center says his agent will explore contract talks with team later this week.

Because of new, restrictive rules and an uncertain financial future for the NFL, the notion of rewarding a young star with a lucrative contract extension no longer is simply a matter of two sides agreeing on a price. It's complicated. Nevertheless, there have been some monster deals recently -- and Nick Mangold has noticed.

"You look at it and you wonder," the New York Jets All-Pro center said Wednesday.

He's beginning to wonder, why not me?

Mangold is entering the final year of a five-year contract (due to make $3 million in 2010), and he'd like to sign an extension before the start of the regular season. Thing is, he might have to take a number and wait outside Mike Tannenbaum's office, as several prominent Jets face contract situations -- namely linebacker David Harris, cornerback Darrelle Revis and left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

"Love the team, love the area, but you see how many people they have to get done," Mangold said. "It should be interesting to see how it all plays out."

To this point, there have been no substantive negotiations, according to Mangold, who described the dialogue this way: "Pleasantry calls, but nothing serious." He expects to huddle with his agent later this week to study the recent extensions around the league, with the hope of also discussing the situation with the Jets' front office in the coming days.

Report: Jets' Mangold not thinking about holdout

Darrelle Revis has hinted he might hold out from Jets training camp, but Nick Mangold, also looking for a new contract, won't say if he will, NJ.com reports.

Appearing at a charity golf event yesterday, Mangold was asked if he's thought about skipping part of camp, which begins Aug. 1.

"Being May, that?s too far off,? Mangold replied. ?We?re going with it as it is, and cross that bridge when the time comes. I don?t expect it being an issue."

Revis earlier this offseason said the Jets had promised to give him a new contract and if they reneged he could skip training camp. Later reports of Revis seeking $20 million a season were refuted by his agents.

Mangold has said he expects a new deal before camp.

Mangold can thank Shonn Greene for a left thigh bruise that caused him to skip team drills during Thursday?s OTAs.

?Our fantastic young running back decided to run into me Tuesday,? Mangold told The Daily News. ?I took a pretty good shot to the thigh. I thought it wouldn?t be too much of a bother. But getting out there and moving was quite painful.?

Greene added Holmes to his personal hit list by barreling over him on Thursday. Somebody should tell the bruising RB that OTAs are supposed to be noncontact.

?He doesn?t run with his eyes open,? Mangold cracked. ?Or he?s color blind.?

Jets center Nick Mangold has not ruled out possible holdout, either

Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold, in the final year of his rookie deal, understands Darrelle Revis is the priority for contract talks.

During each stage of the offseason, Nick Mangold and his agents have assessed his next move. The Pro Bowl center, who is looking for a long-term extension as he enters the final year of his rookie deal, decided it would "behoove" him to attend the voluntary offseason program and OTAs.

But on the day when teammate Darrelle Revis skipped an OTA session because he was unhappy with his contract talks, Mangold didn't make any promises beyond that.

"We make decisions based on whats going on, and when the time comes we?ll make another decision," Mangold said. "I'm not going to say right now rigidly, 'This is going to happen, that?s going to happen,' because things change, and I don?t want to put my foot in my mouth."

OTAs end next week, and the next stages are mandatory mini-camp starting June 14 and training camp in August. Missing either would incur a fine, something Mangold said does weigh into the decision-making.

"You've got to look at the pros and cons of dropping 16,000 dollars per day, and you've got to look, realistically, is it going to change anything?" Mangold said. "Is it going to light a fire under anybody? You've got to try to judge the best you can because you don?t really know, and you hope to make the best-informed decision that you can."

Mangold said there have been "zero" negotiations on his contract front, clarifying that there has been "talking" but no "hard-core negotiations." The team sent Revis a contract proposal two weeks ago, and Mangold recognizes that the cornerback is first on the long list of Jets whose contracts are up after this year.

"As of right now, it appears Revis is the priority on the list," Mangold said, "which I don?t care either way who is the priority and what not, as long as my timeline gets fulfilled."

Mangold's timeline is to have a new deal before the season. LB David Harris, also entering the final year of his rookie deal, would like to have a new deal before the 2010 season as well.

One complicating factor is the 30-percent rule, which in the uncapped year prevents a player's salary in 2010 being more than 30 percent greater what it was in 2009. Of course, there are loopholes, including signing bonuses.

"They do have a ton," Mangold said of the contracts the Jets have to tackle this year. "So it should be very interesting to see how everything pans out and how they manage to manage all of it. It should be interesting."

Center Nick Mangold may skip New York Jets' mandatory minicamp next week because he wants a new deal.

Nick Mangold may be a no-show for the Jets' minicamp next week.

The All-Pro center said he was "50-50" to attend next week's three-day mandatory minicamp. He'd be subject to a fine if he decided to skip the sessions.

Mangold, who is entering the final year of his five-year rookie contract, admitted that skipping minicamp "is always a consideration." He's also fully aware that the Jets could slap the franchise tag on him next year rather than extend him this season.

"That definitely is a possibility that they could say, 'Hey, we're going to let you play through and franchise you later,'" Mangold told the Daily News. "I think that will put a sour taste in my mouth that they'll let me play it out without the security of having years on my contract. I think that would be a disappointing way for the relationship to continue on."

"I wouldn't put it past them to do it," Mangold added. "But we'll cross that bridge if it gets to that."

In an ideal world, Mangold, arguable the best player at his position, would received money comparable to Rams' center Jason Brown's monster deal last year.

"It's not quantum physics," Mangold said. "I assume this is just the way that it goes. You battle it out as needed."

Although David Harris insisted that he's not thinking about his new contract - the linebacker is in the final year of his rookie contract too - Mangold left little doubt that it's on his mind.

"Of course, I think about it," Mangold said. "I got a short career. It's always on the back of my mind. It's been on the back of my mind since February when they said, there's x, y and z why weren't not doing it."

The center also said the contract talks have taken some of the fun out of the game this offseason.

"It takes a little bit out," Mangodl said. "I don't want to have to deal with it. I'm forced into dealing with it. It's kind of a pain."

Money matters. Take this to the bank (no pun intended): C Nick Mangold, LB David Harris and LT D?Brickashaw Ferguson will not get contract extensions in 2010. The Jets have yet to begin negotiations with any of the players and, considering the uncertainty of the CBA, the organization is showing no sense of urgency. The Jets probably won?t admit this publicly, but I think they?ve already made a decision to wait.

By waiting until after the season, GM Mike Tannenbaum is putting himself in an almost impossible position, with Mangold, Harris, WR Braylon Edwards, WR Santonio Holmes and CB Antonio Cromartie all unsigned. Say goodbye to two or three of those players.

Mangold doesn't boycott minicampEmail Print Comments2 By Rich Cimini

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets center Nick Mangold, who said last week there was a 50/50 chance he would skip the team's mandatory minicamp because he's unhappy with his contract, reported Monday morning for the start of the three-day camp.

Mangold, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, is due to make $3.3 million in the final year of his rookie contract. As of late last week, the Jets hadn't made an offer, according to Mangold.

"We'll put it at 50/50 you never know," Mangold said last Thursday. "Got to get through the weekend and make our decision on Sunday."

It was Nick Mangold's turn yesterday to be The Disgruntled Jet.

Like teammate Darrelle Revis, who popped off a day earlier, the center expressed how upset he is with the team over contract negotiations he described as "basically zero right now."

Mangold, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract and wants the security of a long-term extension, something the Jets have talked about but not made happen.

"It's deeply disappointing that we are where we are," Mangold said during the second day of mandatory mini-camp in Florham Park.

CENTER OF ATTENTION: Nick Mangold works out at mini-camp in Florham Park yesterday, when he went off on the Jets over the stalemate in his contract talks.

"I've tried to do the right things on and off the field, and I feel it's the Jets' turn to do the same. Not having that security of an extension is bothersome."

The Jets could always have Mangold play out the final year of his contract and then slap him with the franchise tag.

Even though that would guarantee him a large salary, the franchise tag wouldn't offer long-term protection against injury -- which is why Mangold remains very cool to that idea.

"It'll affect our long-term relationship," Mangold said.

"If they're going to let me go through the season without the security of a long-term deal [and then apply the franchise tag], I'm going to have to decide my wants and desires to be on a team that would allow that to happen."

Mangold said he would never demand a trade, but -- like Revis -- still isn't ruling out a training-camp holdout.

"I expect something to get done, and that's the mode that I'm in," Mangold said.

Mangold: Issue 'deeply disappointing'Email Print Comments40 By Rich Cimini

FLORHAM Park, N.J. -- Nick Mangold didn't feel the need to skip the New York Jets' mandatory minicamp to send a message. Unlike teammate Darrelle Revis, he didn't feel it was necessary to make a statement by feigning injury and sitting out a few plays in practice.

The All-Pro center suspects his employers already know how he feels about his contract situation, adding, "Nothing else really needs to be said or done."

In other words, he's ticked and they know it.

"It's deeply disappointing," Mangold said Tuesday after the morning practice. "I've tried to do the right thing, on and off the field. I feel it's the Jets' turn. Not having the security of an extension is bothersome."

Mangold won't be training-camp holdout
By Rich Cimini
ESPNNewYork.com

There's one less headache for the New York Jets.

All-Pro center Nick Mangold has expressed frustration over the team's unwillingness to negotiate a contract extension, but he indicated Friday night that he's not planning a training-camp holdout.

"It doesn't seem to me to do any good to do it, so I'll be there with bells on," Mangold told the NFL Network.

The Jets report Aug. 1 to camp in Cortland, N.Y.

In last month's minicamp, Mangold hinted that he might be a no-show for training camp. He's entering the final year of a five-year contact, due to make $3.3 million. He's looking for long-term security, but the Jets have used the uncertain labor situation as the reason for not wanting to extend Mangold.

i met mangold down in new orleans for the national championship game vs LSU a few years ago...talked to him for about a half hour...most down to earth and nice guy ever...and he smokes awesome cigars

What's the worst that can happen if the Jets/Mangold don't agree to a new contract before the year is out?....He'll be an unrestricted free agent and that may not be all that bad either.

I'm thinking the worst that can happen is he could get injured and not be worth much?

Mangold arrives ? without new deal
Jets Blog

CORTLAND ? Nick Mangold thought about taking the same route as teammate Darrelle Revis and holding out at the start of training camp.

But unlike Revis, the Jets? center arrived at SUNY Cortland yesterday, and was at peace with his decision.

?I?m a football player,? Mangold said. ?It?s just one of those things where I decided, after thinking about every option and everything, to be here and put my best foot forward and try to have a good time up here in beaut-iful Cortland.?

Mangold is set to make $3.495 million this season, the final year of the rookie contract he signed in 2006. After making the Pro Bowl each of the past two seasons, he hoped to receive the same treatment as left tackle D?Brickashaw Ferguson, who received a six-year, $60 million extension earlier this offseason.

But when he had to decide whether to hold out of camp, Mangold simply looked in the mirror.

?It took a lot of time to come to [the decision], but in the end, it?s who I am, and I?m not gonna stray from who I am,? he said. ?I didn?t want to cross that bridge of trying to change who I am.?

Mangold admitted, though, that he isn?t sure it is the right business decision, and said it is something he could be left thinking about if it doesn?t work out.

?That?s to be seen,? he said. ?That?s one of those great hindsight questions, when you get to look back and say, ?I wish I would have done this? or ?I wish I would have done that.? I?m happy with the decisions I?ve made and how I?ve gone about it, and I?m still proud of everything I?ve done.?
