C Nick Mangold (All American, B1G Champion, National Champion, 7x Pro-bowler)

Rex Ryan says Mangold could play without practicing
Posted by Mike Florio on September 29, 2011

Jets center Nick Mangold continues to miss practice after suffering a high ankle sprain on September 18. On Thursday, however, coach Rex Ryan suggested that Mangold could still play on Sunday night against the Ravens.

?I?m encouraged that he?s getting better,? Ryan said of Mangold. ?Each day, he seems to be getting better. He hasn?t practiced, but he definitely feels like he?s getting better. The thing that?s encouraging about that is he?s doing some things, like stepping over deals, doing some change of direction things and some movement things where it?s not getting worse. It?s actually feeling better the next day, so I?m encouraged by that.?

Ryan said that it?s not necessary that Mangold return to practice before playing. ?Guys, I?m not one of those ?he has to practice? guys,? Ryan said. ?We?re talking about Nick Mangold here, so, no. He doesn?t have to practice.

Ryan said that, barring a setback, he?ll make a decision about Mangold?s availability on Sunday.

Mangold game-time decision for Jets
Jets Blog
By BRIAN LEWIS
Last Updated: October 1, 2011

Jets center Nick Mangold practiced in a limited capacity yesterday and got bumped up to questionable for tomorrow in Baltimore.

Nevertheless, coach Rex Ryan said it's a game-time decision. No, really, it is.

"He's a legitimate game-time," Ryan said. "Not one of those, you really know what's going to happen and say he's game-time. He literally is [a] game-time [decision]," said Ryan, who didn't have Mangold make the trip to Oakland last weekend, but feels the proximity to Baltimore and 8:20 p.m. start time may help.

"I think if [yesterday] was the game, I'd say no. But the fact that it's a Sunday night game may help the process."

Mangold was back practicing for the first time in two weeks, since suffering a high right ankle sprain against Jacksonville. Mangold said if he's cleared, he expects to play the entire game, rather than be eased in this week with limited spot duty.

"If I can go, I imagine I'll be out there the whole time. I think it'd be ill-advised for a couple of snaps," Mangold said. "It's not like a corner you can throw out there. There's continuity amongst the line, relationship with quarterback, flow of the game.

"Me personally, I don't think it's all that great of an idea."

If Mangold doesn't play, rookie third-stringer Colin Baxter will have to contend with Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, one of the NFL's most disruptive linemen.

"He's a strong, powerful man," Mangold said of Ngata. "He's also got pretty good quickness. That's why they [signed him] for a long time. It's going to be a difficult task for us up front."

Mangold's sorely missed
Jets Blog
By MARK CANNIZZARO
October 6, 2011

There are no statistics associated with the center position in football.

But here's a pretty significant statistic associated with the 2-2 Jets playing the last two games without starting center Nick Mangold because of an ankle injury: They're 0-2 without him.

Those two games -- losses in Oakland and Baltimore -- are the only two of Mangold's career that he's missed after starting 89 in a row since he was drafted, including postseason.

On Sunday against the Patriots in New England, Mangold is expected to return to the lineup and not a moment too soon for the staggering Jets offense.

With that, the Jets hope a return to some normalcy on offense ensues, particularly after Sunday night's calamitous embarrassment in Baltimore, where Mark Sanchez was reduced to looking like an overmatched high school quarterback because of poor protection and a nonexistent running game.

Mangold's importance to the Jets cannot be overstated.

"Mark Sanchez is the captain and pilot of the plane and Mangold is ground control,'' Jets defensive tackle Sione Pouha told The Post yesterday. "He's so pivotal. He sees the flow of wind, the flow of weather. There are a lot parallels. His experience enables him to see things and those things don't happen overnight. You can draw it up on paper but when bullets are live, there's a different speed to the game, a different urgency and a different emotion to it.''

Rookie free agent Colin Baxter, who was a late signing for the Jets and wasn't here for training camp, did as well as could be expected replacing Mangold. But, while no one wants to throw him under the bus, his inexperience left the Jets' offense naked without Mangold there to make the protection calls and be the command center for communication.

Sanchez recently told a story about his rookie year when he came to the line of scrimmage and as he was about to take the snap he had a vapor-lock moment and forgot the play and Mangold mapped out the play for him.

Baxter or any other inexperienced fill-in is not capable of that kind of adjustment on the fly the way Mangold is.

"He's the best center in football,'' Rex Ryan said yesterday. "He knows the whole picture and that gives you confidence.''

Most importantly, it gives confidence to Sanchez, who didn't look like he had a confident bone in his body against the Baltimore defense the other night.

"There's something to be said about experience,'' Jets right guard Brandon Moore said, adding that "there were certain things that came up'' in the Ravens game that a rookie has never seen and simply cannot adjust to quickly enough.

"That's what Nick brings; he has experience and understanding how to read thing and make split-second decisions,'' Moore said.

"He's the quarterback of the O-line,'' tight end Dustin Keller said. "He puts everyone in a position to be as successful as they can. Mark can be back there and be confident that Nick is going to put him in the best protection for him. If Mark doesn't recognize something immediately then Nick will recognize it. They're a great combination together.''

Nick Mangold expects to play
ESPNNewYork.com

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets center Nick Mangold is questionable for the team's game at New England, but will likely start after missing the last two games with a high right ankle sprain.

"I'm ready to go," Mangold said.

Week 5: Jets at Patriots

Gang Green is slumping. Up next? The rival Patriots. Jets Center ? Blog ?

Mangold was limited at practice Friday, as he has been all week, after being injured three weeks ago. But coach Rex Ryan says "I feel good about" Mangold being able to play, and the All-Pro center also says he's optimistic.

Ryan stopped short of saying Mangold would definitely go Sunday. "Well, he's listed as questionable. There's that New England Patriots' response," he quipped.

Mangold was replaced the last two games by rookie Colin Baxter, who struggled last week at Baltimore.

Ryan said linebacker Garrett McIntyre (concussion), wide receiver Logan Payne (broken wrist) and linebacker Bryan Thomas (Achilles) will be out. Thomas is on the roster even though he is out for the season. Ryan said the Jets could fill that roster spot before the game Sunday, but he was cagey.

"That's a strong possibility so you can just put yes in there probably," Ryan said. "It's a competitive thing."

NICKED NICK: C Nick Mangold, who played the entire game only three weeks after sustaining a high-ankle sprain, said it felt "pretty good" during the game. Afterward, he suggested it was sore.

"It was as I'd expect after playing on it a full game," he said.

With the Dolphins coming up on Monday night, Mangold will have an extra day to rest. The Jets will have a light practice Wednesday, getting into the heavy prep work on Thursday.

Jets? Nick Mangold Sits Out Practice, Expected To Play
October 13, 2011

NEW YORK (WFAN/AP) ? Jets center Nick Mangold did not participate in practice on Wednesday, but coach Rex Ryan thinks he?ll be fine to start against the Miami Dolphins.

?I expect him to play,? said Ryan.

Mangold, who returned last Sunday after missing two games with a high right ankle sprain, worked with trainers and did some jogging off to the side during the team?s light practice.

The Jets were likely giving their All-Pro center an extra day to recover since they don?t play again until Monday night.

Jets center Nick Mangold returned to practice today after sitting out each of the past two days.

Mangold was in uniform -- the team is not in pads today -- and participated in warm-ups and drills during the portion of practice open to the media. Coach Rex Ryan has said all week he is confident Mangold will play, but the high ankle sprain that kept him out of two games may restrict him in practice early in the week for now.

Mangold Full Go at Practice

Florham Park, N.J.- Without Nick Mangold the Jets offensive line was a horrid mess, but once the All-Pro center returned the offensive line steadily improved to get back on track and it?s hardly a coincidence that the Jets won two of their three games since Mangold?s return. After a few straight weeks of playing with limited practice reps Mangold has good news for Jets fans, he?s well rested, healed and back to full go at practice.

With a healthy enough to play, but not practice, Mangold the Jets offensive line got back to protecting Sanchez and opening holes for Shonn Greene, now that they have Mangold back at 100 percent things should continue to improve as this offensive line starts to gel and get in a rhythm of their own. And the Jets will need Mangold at his best as well as they need the line to be a cohesive unit if they want to continue their winning ways in these next few weeks. With a road trip up to Buffalo to face the surprising Bills and a home game against the hated Patriots a week later (and the Bills again just two weeks after the Pats) nothing will come easy to this Jets team and they will need to be clicking on all cylinders in order to emerge from this stretch of games in pole position for the division. Which is a very real possibility thanks to the Steelers knocking off the Patriots yesterday and bringing the Jets to within a game of the division lead.

NY Jets' Nick Mangold leads the way for running attack, making his ankle injury a thing of the past
Gang Green ground game gets spark from center
BY Manish Mehta
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
Tuesday, December 13 2011

image.jpg

Center Nick Mangold appears to be all the way back from a high ankle sprain.

Nick Mangold flashed some of his open-field blocking skills on Sunday. He made a signature block on a 36-yard screen pass to Shonn Greene, further evidence that his high ankle sprain is a distant memory. Mangold made several highlight-reel blocks to spark a Jets offense that has found a rhythm heading into this weekend?s game against the Eagles.

?You don?t get a lot of opportunities to showcase how well you?re feeling,? Mangold said of breaking free from the trenches on screen passes. ?(I) got lucky on a few of the calls where I was able to move around a little bit. It was great to see Shonn and L.T. being able to make plays off of those blocks.?

Mangold missed the better part of three games earlier this season due to the ankle injury suffered early in Week 2, but he?s been steadily getting back to his typical self.

?It?s tough to get this body moving like that,? Mangold cracked. ?I wouldn?t have come back if I wasn?t able to do all the things that I wanted to do. That was my goal as soon as I was injured to make sure that I come back and not be limited.?

Rex credits ?best in the NFL? Mangold for Jets? offensive turnaround
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 16, 2011

nick-mangold-pic.jpg

The Jets? offense appears to be on the right track after some rough stretches this season, and Jets coach Rex Ryan credits one player for that more than any other: Center Nick Mangold.

Ryan was asked today about the offensive line looking much better now than it did earlier in the season, and he sang the praises of Mangold for getting the offense going.

?I think the big thing was getting Mangold back healthy,? Ryan said, in comments distributed by the team?s PR staff. ?I think that was the biggest deal. You figure you can replace a center, but a center at that level? Mangold is the best in the league. I think we all realize that now. We all knew it anyway, but when we never had him for that stretch, obviously, we really missed him. Our entire offense, the way we?ve practiced these last couple of weeks, I don?t know want to say it?s a different offense, but the bugs are out. We?re at a high level right now. Wednesday practices are good. Thursday practices are good. Friday practices are good. I think that leads you to, obviously, play much better on Sunday.

Mangold missed the Jets? games against the Raiders and the Ravens, and the Jets lost both of them, with the offensive line often looking out of sorts without him. The offense still isn?t the Jets? strength, but with Mangold up front it looks competent.

And Ryan is starting to feel more confident. He joked with reporters that they soon may be hearing the brash head coach openly talking about the Super Bowl again.

?Right now, we?re fighting for our playoff lives,? Ryan said. ?We have to get in the playoffs before we can talk Super Bowl, then we will.?

Nick Mangold wants teammates to ?Man up and put your name to it?
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 11, 2012

After reading anonymous quotes from some of his teammates ripping Mark Sanchez and saying they?re rather play with Peyton Manning, Jets center Nick Mangold has had enough.

Mangold took to Twitter on Wednesday to take issue with his unnamed teammates who told the New York Daily News that Sanchez is ?lazy and content because he knows he?s not going to be benched.?

?This,? Mangold tweeted, with a link to the Daily News article, ?is false. If ?unnamed sources? want to attack Mark, man up and put your name to it.?

Mangold makes a fair point: If you?re a player on the Jets, and you want the Jets to get better, anonymously attacking Sanchez through the media is not the right way to go about it. A couple of Jets players have manned up and put their names on their comments, including backup quarterback Greg McElroy and running back LaDainian Tomlinson. But much of the criticism from within the Jets has come from people who didn?t put their names behind that criticism. It?s not surprising that Mangold is unhappy about that.

Jets' Nick Mangold speaks up in support of quarterback Mark Sanchez

Jets center Nick Mangold said clearly that Mark Sanchez is "my guy."

Showing the kind of veteran leadership that is needed in a fractured Jets locker room after an 8-8 season, Jets center Nick Mangold went on ESPN 1050 Radio today in defense of his quarterback, Mark Sanchez.

Mangold, a six-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler, said he believes in Sanchez "100 percent." Most strongly, he brushed aside speculation of the Jets' interest in Peyton Manning and said he wants to move forward with Sanchez.

"I think if anybody could get a clean bill of health, shoot, I?ll take Joe Montana if he had a clean bill of health. Dan Marino, I think, would be another great one," Mangold said on "The Michael Kay Show," acknowledging Manning's unique ability. "I think it's all speculation, and I think that Mark Sanchez is my guy. Hes the one I want to go into battle with, and I wouldn?t be too keen to seeing that being changed.

Mangold responded to a Daily News article today in which anonymous Jets players criticized Sanchez, some calling him "lazy" or "coddled" or advocating for the team to acquire Manning this offseason. Manning sat out this season after having two neck surgeries, and he may be available this spring as the Colts are expected to draft Stanford's Andrew Luck No. 1 overall.

The veteran called the opinions in the article "wrong" and "false" and also "disconcerting," from the vantage point of a player hoping for team chemistry to be rebuilt. He said he did not believe that the opinions expressed in the article were widespread, leading him to question the motives of the anonymous players.

"It was saying he was lazy, didn?t put the work in, felt complacent, and I think it couldn?t be more further from the truth," Mangold said. "The guy puts in more work and more time, cares more about the team than I think anybody else in that locker room. And for somebody to come out and say that, and not put their name behind it, really bothered me."
