Center Nick Mangold was injured in the first quarter of today's game against Jacksonville.

Jets center Nick Mangold will have an MRI tomorrow after leaving today's game against the Jaguars with an ankle injury, according to a person with knowledge of his injury status.

The X-Rays are clear and Mangold likely suffered a high ankle sprain, the person said. That person requested anonymity because the team has not commented on Mangold's injury yet.

Mangold left the game late in the first quarter after a Jaguars defender appeared to roll up on his right ankle. He was replaced by Colin Baxter, who was claimed by the Jets off waivers from San Diego.

Jets' Mangold needs MRI exam for ankle injury
Jets Blog
By BRIAN COSTELLO
September 19, 2011

The scene inside the Jets' locker room was not all celebratory after yesterday's 32-3 victory over the Jaguars.

Center Nick Mangold sprained his right ankle in the first quarter, and never returned to the game. X-rays showed the ankle was not broken, but the All-Pro center will undergo an MRI exam today to determine how much time he will miss, if any. Mangold left the locker room on crutches and was wearing a walking boot on his right foot.

"[It's] very frustrating," Mangold said. "It's not what I want. It's not what I expected. It's difficult."

Colin Baxter made his NFL debut replacing Mangold. The Jets picked up Baxter two weeks ago off waivers from the Chargers. Baxter had one error on the timing of a snap, but fared well otherwise.

"Kind of got thrown in the fire there," Baxter said. "But I feel like I had a few stupid little mental mistakes I've got to eliminate. But other than that, I feel like it wasn't too bad."

Mangold has started 82 straight regular season games for the Jets.

Jets may face Oakland Raiders without Nick Mangold
Published: Monday, September 19, 2011
By Jenny Vrentas/The Star-Ledger

Rex Ryan, now in his third season as the Jets head coach, has never entered a game without Nick Mangold as his starting center. But this week, he?s bracing for uncharted territory, deeming Mangold ?very iffy? for the trip to Oakland.

Mangold suffered a high ankle sprain in Sunday?s win against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The good news is that today?s MRI showed no ligament damage. The bad news is that high ankle sprains often keep players out for weeks, despite Mangold?s high pain tolerance and 82-game start streak.

?I don?t think it looks very good as far as playing this week,? Ryan said of Mangold, a three-time Pro Bowler. ?With that being said, he thinks he can go. ... We?ll see how it progresses. I wouldn?t count him out; he?s a tough guy.?

Nick Mangold update

Florham Park, N.J. ? The prediction of time out for C Nick Mangold?s high ankle sprain was set to be two to three weeks and as of this afternoon, nothing has changed, even though he seems extremely optimistic about the situation. This Sunday the Jets are facing off against the big defensive line of the Oakland Raiders and the team is one day away from knowing for sure if they will be without Mangold.

This isn't a familiar spot for C Nick Mangold but due to his injury he might have to get used to it for a couple of weeks. We'll find out soon enough. (JetsInsider.com Photo)

?Tomorrow we?ll definitely know if he?s going or not.? coach Ryan said, ?If he?s not going to play, then obviously he won?t make the trip out there. I don?t see it happening. He seems to think (he will be able to play.) We?ll see.?

Coach Ryan is obviously not as optimistic as the reliable center whose 82 straight game streak is on the line. It doesn?t seem to be Ryan?s lack of confidence but just protecting his player from further inujury, which is always a smart plan. Coach is very impressed with the way Mangold is coming along though but still is playing it safe.

?He?s off the crutches, doing different things.? Ryan said, ?He?s been on a bike and he?s also doing other exercises and stuff. For a high-ankle sprain, he?s well ahead of the game. We?ll make that decision. Sometimes you?ve got to protect the player from the player.?

Mangold was off the crutches today and walking around in a boot as he made a late locker room appearance. The second he walked through the door, the media dropped what they were doing and swarmed his locker for any new updates, but all we got was the usual.

?Everyday gets better. That?s what we look for. One day at a time.? Mangold said.

The streak of 82 straight games played is on the mind of the talented center and he is proud of what he has accomplished but he understands the reality of this and is putting his priorities in the right order.

?It is very important. I?m very proud of it.? Mangold said, ?It is something I take great pride in, but at the same time it?s not more important than what?s doing what?s best for the team and what?s best for myself.?

Mangold kept the interview short and sweet and the only thing really taken away from it was the fact that he knows that any day he could feel better and that tomorrow is another day.

?Today was no chance.? Mangold said, ?but tomorrow you never know.?

Nick Mangold won?t travel to Oakland
Posted by Josh Alper on September 23, 2011

The chances of Nick Mangold starting at center for the Jets against the Raiders this weekend never looked good and we can now turn our attention to other matters.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is at Jets practice and shares the news we?ve all been expecting. Mangold will not make the trip to Oakland and is out for Sunday?s game. Colin Baxter, an undrafted rookie who the team claimed off waivers at the end of training camp, will make his first NFL start.

As you?d expect, Baxter had some tough moments against the Jaguars in Week Two. The team?s running game never got on track, although it didn?t look very good when Mangold was healthy either, and pass protection was also a problem for the rookie. With right tackle Wayne Hunter also struggling in his transition to the starting lineup, the Jets will have a less than ideal offensive line to do battle with an aggressive Raiders defense.

Mangold?s high ankle sprain is expected to keep him out a while longer. With road games looming against the Ravens and Patriots, the Jets need Baxter to be a quick study. Simply replacing Mangold as a blocker is tough enough, but the center was also responsible for setting up the team?s protection schemes.
