C Nick Mangold (All American, B1G Champion, National Champion, 7x Pro-bowler)

Homecoming game in Cincinnati for pair of Jets

Nick Mangold certainly wasn't going to let Mike Nugent -- the team's kicker, of all people -- one-up him.

The Jets teammates grew up in Centerville, Ohio, a town about 45 miles north of Cincinnati. The pair, both out of Ohio State, will play near their hometown for the first time Sunday when the Jets face the Bengals, meaning more ticket requests than usual.

Nugent said he made a request of 50 to 60 tickets for family and friends.

Mangold laughed when told about that number.

"I'm about half of where he's at," the center said. "Apparently, he's got more family. That's what I'm going with. I don't want to believe that he's got more friends."

Mangold and Nugent are not alone in returning to their home state. Quarterback/receiver Brad Smith (Liberty), safety Eric Smith (Groveport) and guard Adrien Clarke (Shaker Heights) all grew up in Ohio, though much farther north of the city best known for its Skyline Chili.

"It's nice because it gives the opportunity for some family members who aren't able to travel. This gets them the opportunity to come watch a game," Mangold said.

Home sweet Ohio for Jets' trio

CINCINNATI -- When he was very, very young, Nick Mangold had dreams of being a quarterback.

Reality, however, quickly set in for the Jets' center, who knew his body type would make that an impossibility.

"At about 4 or 5 years old," the 6-foot-4, 300-pound Mangold said, "I realized that I wasn't going to be able to do that. So, it was neat to be able to watch Boomer" Esiason.

Uh, Nick, that makes the former Bengal and Jet sound kind of old, doesn't it?

"Yeah, he'll really appreciate that," Mangold said dryly.

Esiason is one of the few historical connections between the two teams, who will meet today at Paul Brown Stadium for only the fourth time in the last 14 seasons.

But Mangold is one of several current connections. He and kicker Mike Nugent both went to Ohio State, and both are from Centerville, Ohio, which is about 40 minutes from Cincinnati. And left guard Adrien Clarke also played for Ohio State, and is from Shaker Heights, a Cleveland suburb.

"It's neat," Mangold said, "because I have a couple of family members who aren't able to get away for a game, so it's nice for them to come and be able to see a game."

Mangold said he left about 20 tickets for friends and family, but Nugent's list is about three times as long.

"He has a lot more than me," Mangold said, smiling, "almost double the amount of people that I do. Maybe he has a bigger family."

Mangold said he "never got to too many [Bengals'] games but always followed them on TV" and added that one of his favorite players besides Esiason was Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson, the defensive tackle who was the No. 1 overall draft choice in 1994.

Jones had his best game as a Jet. No running back had gained 100 yards against Pittsburgh's outstanding defense in more than two years, but Jones finished yesterday's game with 30 carries for 117 yards. Jones showed off a physical running style that has been missing for too much of this season, and he was helped by a big game from center Nick Mangold, who took on the Steelers' enormous nose tackle, Casey Hampton, and got the better of their one-on-one matchup.

Ferguson, Mangold usher in friendship

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold met at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., in 2006 and immediately clicked. Their friendship grew as they made the pre-draft rounds and were both drafted by the Jets.

They would learn about life in the NFL -- on and off the field -- together, and will perhaps anchor the Jets offensive line for the next decade.

But nobody envisioned where their relationship would go, least of all Ferguson.

One day last season, Mangold, who was engaged to his high school sweetheart, Jenny, asked Ferguson to be in his wedding. Flattered by the request to share a day so special, Ferguson quickly said yes.

The lavish ceremony took place last April in the couple's hometown of Centerville, Ohio. Approximately 300 people attended. Mangold's groomsmen included Ohio State teammates A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel as well as Ferguson, a former star at the University of Virginia.

"I think whenever somebody asks you to be a part of their wedding, that's a really big honor," said Ferguson. "Usually, you think of best friends and people you've grown up with being in your wedding. I didn't think he saw me in that light in the two years we've known each other. I was really honored.

"I had a great time. Met his family. His wife is a wonderful individual. ... It was a tough situation (being around all those Buckeyes). I couldn't talk junk because their record was better than ours. I had to let that one good go."

Jets About to Jump to the Next Level
By Joe Caporoso | June 10th, 2008

Nick Mangold - Mangold was a pro-bowl alternate his rookie season but took a few baby steps back last year because he surrounded by a weaker line. This year he will have future hall of famer Alan Faneca lining up next to him, which will help tremendously on the field. Under Faneca?s mentoring, expect Mangold to become the best center in the NFL over the next couple of years. Yes, I said the best center in the NFL.

Ranking the top 5 NFL centers

Maybe next year?

The top breakout candidate to crack the top 5 for '09:

6. Nick Mangold, New York Jets. Mangold is not particularly strong and doesn't have the physical tools some look for, but he is instinctive, tough, and smart, and all he has done is start from the first day of his rookie season, making all the protection calls and leading his unit with solid play. He's already one of the game's top ten centers and should be on this list going into next season.

When Eric Mangini arrived in New York, fans knew he would be cleaning house by removing older players that did not fit his plans. Among the casualties was perennial Pro bowler, Kevin Mawae. Practically a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame, Mawae was the identity of the Jets' offensive line for years.

He epitomized that hard-nosed nasty that fans love to see out of players. Fans feared he'd be irreplaceable. Fortunately, Mangini's plan to re-build the team from the trenches involved selecting Nick Mangold. Chosen 29th Overall in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Ohio State Buckeye was a key component in Mangini's plans.

Mangold will be working, uh, closely with Favre

By Mark Gokavi

A few leftover Brett Favre-related items not suffocatingly covered by the four-letter network:
? Favre's going to get real familiar with Nick Mangold's, uh, personality. The Alter High School grad and Centerville native is the Jets center and figures to be working closely with the future Hall of Famer. No word if Mangold has talked to A.J. Hawk about the whole saga.

Clicking on Nick Mangold's official Web site ? nickmangold.net ? you get treated to a hefty dose of heavy metal music from Metallica.
Pictures of Mangold ? the New York Jets center from Ohio State and Alter High School ? are splashed on the site, and the words "Strength," "Agility" and "Force" flash on your computer screen.
The 6-foot-4, 300-pounder will put those qualities on display when the Jets play host to the Cincinnati Bengals at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J., on Sunday, Oct. 12.
"I'm making strides and always trying to get better," said Mangold, a third-year veteran who was selected No. 29 overall in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
He calls it a dream come true to be snapping the ball into the hands of a future Pro Football Hall of Famer ? quarterback Brett Favre.
Numbers "74" (Mangold) and "4" (Favre) are a team.
