Center rankings: Some of the smartest players on the field
Posted: May 11, 2009

As RealScouts, a group of former NFL scouts, take a look at the top centers, it's important to note that these guys are among the smartest players on the field. Not only must they make their own adjustments, they must read the defensive front and make the line calls out to teammates, hear the quarterback's audible, re-adjust the line calls, snap the ball and then get his man blocked -- all in a matter of a few seconds.

NFL centers come in all shapes and sizes, and our top-10 ranking is representative of that.

1. Nick Mangold, Jets. The Jets' offensive line had its best season in a long while, and it starts with Mangold. He doesn't overwhelm with physical tools and there isn't one aspect of his game that stands out, but he does everything well. He has started every game of his NFL career, showing excellent football intelligence, competitiveness and instincts. As his strength and technique continue to improve, he will get even better.

Q&A with ... Jets C Nick Mangold
Posted: May 25, 2009
Bill Eichenberger

After a recent practice, Jets center Nick Mangold told Sporting News' Bill Eichenberger that the arrival of coach Rex Ryan has been like a shot of adrenaline for a team still hurting after a late-season collapse cost them a playoff berth. Mangold said the energy and enthusiasm have returned in a big way to the team's training complex in Florham Park, N.J.

Q: What are your first impressions playing for Ryan?
A: It's been fantastic. He has a great passion for the game. The defense is fired up. And as an offense, going against that kind of defense every day is only going to make us better. But it still is kind of a pain in the butt.

Q: Why is that?
A: His defense, the schemes that he brings in, they are pretty complex. They are making us think upfront.

Q: Recently in Sporting News Today, RealScouts, a group of former NFL scouts, rated you as the No. 1 center in the league. What's your reaction to that?
A: That's kind of them. Should I send a thank-you note?

Q: Do you think you deserve that sort of ranking?
A: Seriously, I really do appreciate it, but there are some guys out there who are heads and shoulders above me.

Q: Who would that be?
A: A big one right in our own backyard is Shaun (O'Hara of the Giants). He is a fantastic center who has been doing it at a high level for a long time.

Q: From the outside, it appears the Jets' offensive line is a clear strength of this team. Do you view it the same way?
A: Definitely. I believe that the line drives your team, at least on the offensive side. And our guys take that to heart. We try to be the leaders, to set the tempo, to get our guys going, to make sure we are doing all the right things.

Center - Nick Mangold vs. Shaun O'Hara

Run blocking:
Mangold - 141 POA attempts, 857 yards, 133 POA wins. Mangold's POA win rate - a phenomenal 94.3%. Mangold's YPA - 6.1.
O'Hara - 165 POA attempts, 1,181 yards, 139 POA wins. O'Hara's POA win rate 84.2%. O'Hara's YPA - 7.2.
Run blocking advantage - O'Hara's YPA is very good but Mangold's YPA in relation to the rest of his line is better. Mangold also had a huge POA win rate edge, so he wins this one fairly easily.

Pass blocking:
Mangold - Two sacks allowed, one offensive holding penalty, zero tipped passes, one QB hit while passing. Total splash plays - three.
O'Hara - One sack allowed, one offensive holding penalty, two tipped passes, two QB hit while passing. Total splash plays - six.
Pass blocking advantage - Mangold has a clear edge here as well.

The bottom line - Both made the Pro Bowl but Mangold is the best center in the NFL. Advantage Mangold. Jets lead 2-1.

By Jets Staff

Thomas Jones had a career year in 2008. Did he treat his O-line to anything?

Yeah, he got us a watch, which was very gracious of him. As an offensive line, we appreciate it.

If you?re teaching a kid to play center, what?s most critical to his success?

Make sure the quarterback gets the ball.

Anyone who follows you on Twitter knows you?re a huge Dave Matthews Band fan. Is it safe to say they?re your fav?

They are tied for the fav. It?s them and Metallica.

Do you prefer their older, jammier stuff, or their more recent stuff?

Both. I like a good jam but some of the new stuff has been fantastic.

Martians abduct you and say they?ve been watching you put on your second head and your green and white skin every Sunday. They want to know why 80,000 people come to watch you every week. What do you tell them?

Football is America?s game.

Do you have a funniest moment from inside the huddle?

Yeah, my rookie year we were down in Miami and it was an intense part of the game and somebody had said something. I forget who it was, but it was directed at Chad [Pennington], and Chad fired back with "Hey, this isn?t my first time at the rodeo," and we all kind of just cracked up there a little bit.

What does it mean to have the O-line return completely intact?

Oh, it?s fantastic. I think it?s a great asset to the team.

Last year, the line had two new starters in RT Damien Woody and LG Alan Faneca. It also happened to be Bill Callahan's first season as your position coach. Now with everyone returning, how will that continuity help?

The ability to be together, and at the same time the ability to dive deeper into things. We started off with the basic stuff, but now that we?re together and we?ve been together, you get deeper into the depths of O-line play.

When was the last time your hair was shorter than shoulder-length?

Shoot, freshman year of college or so.

Who?s the best defensive tackle you?ve faced?
Because I?ve gotta play him two times a year, I?d have to say Vince Wilfork.

What do you miss most about college?
Not having a mortgage payment [laughs]. No, what I miss most about college is the lack of responsibilities as you go through school.

What would you be doing if you weren?t involved in professional sports?

Crying. I would probably be working in real-estate development.

How did you prepare for the business side of football when you were coming into the league? Is there anything that surprised you once you got into the league about the business side?

No, you can?t really prepare for it. You just kind of have to learn it as you go. You kind of learn on the job and it takes a while to fully understand it.

Can the Jets have the best O-line in ?09?

I would expect so. That?s our goal.

New York Jets Examiner Nick Mangold speaks: An interview with the New York Jets' Pro Bowl center
July 31

35271.jpg

There aren?t many opportunities in life for a 6?4?, 300-pound offensive lineman to go unnoticed; it simply doesn?t happen. Yet, on a stormy July afternoon in lower Manhattan?s lavish Tribeca Grand Hotel, Nick Mangold effortlessly blended into a crowd of video game lovers whose attention rested solely upon UbiSoft?s Holiday lineup.

Despite towering over everyone in attendance, the New York Jets? Pro Bowl center proved to be no match for the multitude of demos and previews UbiSoft brought with them.

Mangold played a secondary role to Panasonic?s high-definition plasma displays, featuring Assassin?s Creed II, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Red Steel 2, RUSE, and much more.

On the surface, the former first-round pick looks like he?d be more comfortable with an axe and flannel shirt in the middle of a forest. But the long blond hair and grizzly beard can only camouflage his jovial charisma for so long.

Within minutes, he?s encouraging everyone in close proximity to have their mind-blown by the uniqueness of the hotel?s restroom before they leave for the day.

The afternoon was one of palpable anticipation. While UbiSoft?s upcoming Holiday titles received well-deserved interest, any sports? fan could tell Mangold?s mind was with football, the Jets, and the beginning of training camp in Cortland, NY.

The man appeared absolutely focused. The video games serve only as a momentary distraction for No. 74 as he makes his necessary adjustments prior to an arduous month of practice and preparation.

Discussing everything from Madden ratings to his arrival in New York following the Kevin Mawae era, Mangold makes it abundantly clear that, no matter what, football comes first.

Nick Mangold suffers knee injury | ProFootballTalk.com

Though coach Rex Ryan says it's no big deal, Jets center Nick Mangold suffered a knee injury during practice on Sunday.

"It is a knee, but it's not a serious thing," Ryan said. "I don't know the timetable, he may miss a practice or two, I'm not real sure. But it's not serious.

"I'm not exactly sure [what the injury is], but it's nothing serious. There was no ligament damage or anything else. It's probably more of an inconvenience than anything else. Anytime you deal with a knee though, it's pretty scary. He should be fine."

One thing we've learned over the past few days is that the initial diagnosis of a knee injury can change, dramatically -- whether it's initially believed to be an ACL tear but isn't, or whether it's not believed to be an ACL tear but is.

Hope it's minor...

Jets not concerned about Mangold's injury

Center hurts right knee in running drill

By Dan Sweeney ? [email protected] ? Staff Writer ? August 10, 2009

CORTLAND - As New York Jets starting center Nick Mangold walked off the field with a trainer during practice on a gray, overcast day at SUNY Cortland, the Jets' hope of returning the same five offensive linemen that started each of the team's 16 games last season looked briefly gloomy, much like the weather.
adlabel_horz.gif

Mangold went down about an hour into Sunday's morning practice during a nine-on-seven inside running drill and did not return.
However, coach Rex Ryan said the injury to Mangold's right knee is not believed to be serious. He said there is no ligament damage, and that he doesn't know the timetable of Mangold's return but he may miss a practice or two.
"Anytime you deal with a knee it is a little scary," Ryan said, adding that "he should be fine."
In his fourth season out of Ohio State, Mangold is part of an offensive line that paved the way for the AFC's leading rusher, Thomas Jones.
The other members of that offensive line are left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson, right tackle Damien Woody, left guard Alan Faneca and right guard Brandon Moore.
