Recruiting Insider: Towns commits to Harvard, Wesson offered by Ohio State

Kaleb Wesson offered by Ohio State

Hours after receiving his first Big Ten offer from Iowa, 2017 Westerville South big man Kaleb Wesson received his biggest offer to date, as Ohio State offered the 6-foot-9 post savvy center on Monday.

The son of former Ohio State big man Keith Wesson, who played for the Buckeyes as a post player in the 1980s, the younger Kaleb is reaping the benefits of a breakout sophomore season in which he helped lead Westerville South to its first-ever state championship game.

With the best post skills of any player in Ohio's 2017 class, Wesson has been on a steady incline since exploding onto the scene with the Wildcats this past season. A highly-skilled big man with great feel for the game, Wesson has been a major priority for Ohio State for quite some time, visiting the Buckeyes' campus several times last fall.

Receiving previous offers from Xavier and aforementioned Iowa, we feel great about Ohio State's chances in pursuing the rising junior big man, as Wesson has indicated on several occasions that playing for the hometown Buckeyes would be a dream of his.

While Wesson is rated as an elite offensive tackle by several national football recruiting services (247 Sports rated Wesson as the No. 9 offensive tackle nationally), the 6-foot-9 big man informed Prep Hoops Ohio on Monday that he does not plan to play football in the 2015 season, opting to shift his focus primarily to basketball.

HOW KALEB WESSON'S COMMITMENT IMPACTS OHIO STATE'S RECRUITING EFFORTS

55570_h.jpg,qitok=RXEEXhUH.pagespeed.ce.QKipbwSs2Q.jpg

After years of underwhelming post play following the departure of Jared Sullinger, Ohio State head coach Thad Matta seems to have figured out exactly what he wants out of his 2016 and 2017 recruiting classes: Matta wants to go big.

At least that's the impression the Buckeyes are giving off, anyway, with the addition of 6-foot-8, 280-pound four-star big man Kaleb Wesson on Friday night. At that size, he was also a highly-touted football recruit along the offensive line playing at Westerville South High School, located near Columbus. But, for now, it appears Wesson has opted to play on the hardwood at the next level.

WESSON EXPANDING HIS GAME
If you missed Birm's article on 2017 commit Kaleb Wesson, check it out here.

His humility – despite the hype surrounding high school athletes committed to play for Ohio State – is impressive.

"I'm not actually sure why (Ohio State) offered me so early but I did have a really good summer," Wesson told Eleven Warriors. "They have told me that I have low post scoring which they haven't had in the past few years and that I bring something different to the program."

The future Buckeye big man competed at the first NextUpRecruits Ohio camp in October. Even with his frame, Wesson displayed some ability to put the ball on the floor and hit jumpers. He knows modern power forwards or centers need to be more versatile to avoid being constrained to the low-post area. Although he is certainly crafty down there too:

I'm the same age as his father Keith. The elder Wesson was a Niles Red Dragon. I know this because I once had the pleasure of having "SPALDING" imprinted on my forehead by him courtesy of a slam dunk. I was glad when I got to Ohio State and saw he was now on our side. Even happier to see his son follow in his foot steps.

Doubt if he makes the 12 man roster for the FIBA World Championship games but it is still a very nice honor and playing against some of the best will only help with his development.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Kaleb Wesson has another chance to show he's one of the top high school basketball players in the country this summer.

Wesson, the Westerville South center committed to Ohio State in the 2017 recruiting class, has accepted an invitation to the USA Basketball U17 training camp for the 2016 FIBA World Championship.

USA basketball released the full list of the 39 camp participants on Thursday. You can see the full list here.
