Portland's 'point' of view

Twenty-four hours had yet to pass on the draft lottery transformation of the Portland Trail Blazers, and general manager Kevin Pritchard and his staff already had brainstormed a most intriguing idea: If they're going to draft Greg Oden, they should take a hard look at making a trade to get Mike Conley Jr. to come with him.

So the discussion is under way, a source close to the team and Oden said Wednesday night, about trading into the top of the lottery for a second draft pick to secure the franchise center's personal point guard. It would be a brilliant, bold stroke for the Blazers G.M., and here's the thing: Pritchard has the parts and the imagination to make it happen.

I always love the references to "sources close to..." and "after speaking to confidantes ... " -- to say that Greg was relieved by a small market is not true. His personal choice would have been Atlanta - not exactly small. Of the teams with the best chance to win the lottery, he liked Boston because it was a good bball town. He would like to have a home in LA -- the only place he really did NOT want to go was Memphis - a small market. Funny how things get spun and speculated on.

you know what i say "if its not from the horses mouth..." unless credibility is established its not worth much in my view. and when "sources" dont give their name or anything, yeah real credible...

Boston columnist Bob Ryan on SportsCenter:

"People of Portland, be aware. You will win a championship within 3 to 5 years with Greg Oden, and it won't be the last."

This was in response to which NBA centers his career would resemble. He mentioned Parish (3 titles) and Olajuwon (2 titles).

But he would have considered Greg the greatest thing since sliced bread had the Celts won the 1st pick in the draft...talk about sour grapes.

Be a little less transparent Bobby.

How is predicting multiple NBA Championships sour grapes?

I took the parts of the statement, "a championship in 3-5 years" & "but it won't last" as : "He'll probably be enough to get you a title, then fade into mediocrity."

I didn't bother to read the whole thing becasue on the Cowherd show a day or 2 ago CC said Ryan's column was really whinining how the Celtics are somehow cursed for not winning the lottery (again), so I figured it was more of the same.

EDIT: guess i couldn't "read it", as I just reread that you said it was a quote from SportsCenter, so maybe I misinterpreted the jist of what you / he was saying.

Double Edit: "and it won't be the last." OH! Completely misread it...by bad.

Greg Oden's Take: "Wherever I go, I need to get a raincoat!"
by: Mike Schmidt - NBDL, NCAA Scout, Jonathan Watters - Director of NCAA Scouting
May 29, 2007

On the wrist injury, and whether it changed his perspective on playing his sophomore year at Ohio State?

"After this year? Yeah. It was kind of like, some things are going to happen no matter what. You never know what?s going to happen that next year. It?s a great opportunity to go to the NBA, and I feel like I can keep on improving and get myself up to that level to be a pretty decent player in the NBA."

Oden paired with Russell in first marketing deal

Greg Oden has been drafted by a trading card company, and will be on the same team as Bill Russell.

A possible No. 1 draft pick, Oden signed a multiyear deal Tuesday to become a spokesman for Topps Co. His first deal? A card featuring him and Russell, the Boston Celtics Hall of Famer, on the 50th anniversary of the company's first basketball set.

Oden's road show continues at NBA predraft camp
Posted: Thursday May 31, 2007 8:35 PM

Despite the virtual guarantee of being a top-two pick, there was some question whether Oden would decide to make the leap into the professional ranks. Some wondered if he was truly dedicated to the pro game, having strongly considered staying in school - mostly to enjoy campus life.

"I'm sorry if I look kinda different, that it didn't seem like I had the passion to come out," Oden said. "It's the kid in me, I'm 19 years old. I'm enjoying walking the oval at The Ohio State University. But when you put me out there on the floor, it's no difference who I'm out there with. I'm gonna go out there and I'm gonna fight, even if I am a little scared.

"If you dunk on me one time, I'm gonna come back and I'm gonna hit you wherever it matters to stop you from scoring the next time."
