C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

I'm reluctant to post this ridiculous quote in this thread, but it's a known national writer, and it was quoted by David Briggs in The Lantern today, so the topic is probably unavoidable. I've lost almost all respect for William Rhoden, it's just sad that he felt compelled to make the comparison.

"Oden's presence should raise concerns at Ohio State, where, for the second time in five years, a star freshman athlete is in position to lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. I look at Oden and think about Maurice Clarett. In his freshman season, Clarett led the Buckeyes to a 14-0 record and the 2002 National Championship. He never played another game at Ohio State as his life spiraled out of control. He is currently in prison ... What is to prevent Oden from repeating Clarett's tragic story? After all, without careful supervision, celebrity can override a player's character" - William Rhoden in the New York Times on why Columbus police should be on guard for a drunken and gun-toting Oden wandering the streets at 3 a.m.

Seriously though, this may be the most ludicrous statement ever written. David Briggs

Note that Briggs is quoting Rhoden

The basic assertion, in this article, at least from what I can see is that if you're a young, black, talented, highly touted athelete, (these are the only things Oden and Clarret have in common) you're on the hairy edge of going wrong your whole life.

This is pretty insane...

Unreal. To overlook pre-existing character flaws in Clarett just so he can make an asinine statement like that....unbelievable. What a hack.

"Rhoden's presence should raise concerns at the New York Times, where, for the second time in five years, a "journalist" is in position to make up complete garbage and have it printed in what used to be regarded as a top newspaper. I look at Rhoden and think about Jayson Blair. In 2003, Blair plagiarized and was forced to resign after having had a history of high error rates and sloppiness. He never wrote another story at the Times as his life spiraled out of control. He is currently in college intending to go in to human resources... What is to prevent Rhoden from repeating Blair's tragic story? After all, without careful supervision, New York Time's journalists can make stuff up without consequence for years, and even attack various Universities and students in them to sell a story."

There, I wrote my own "story"

It's not even a relevant arguement. If you try to make that comparison, then you have to throw in every star freshman athlete that has come through the spotlight in the last 10 years.

Guys like MoC are going to get in trouble eventually, just because of who they are and how they have been raised. To lump in good guys like Greg Oden into that category, just because they are a star athlete on a top team as a freshman, is not only ridiculous, it's unfair.
