C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

I am asking out of ignorance, but isn't the issue with Oden flexing of the wrist? Isn't there some sort of device he can wear that stabilizes the hand and wrist so it wont flex? Would'nt a one handed Greg Oden be a nice 9th man right now?

Or are we thinking he might redshirt? :)

Actually, the issue is with the strength of the wrist. The medical staff wants to be 100% sure his wrist is strong enough to withstand contact before he will be cleared. He will wear a special brace during practice and games to give him added protection. He has been going through non-contact drills and doing conditioning. Bottom line is when everyone feels the wrist is strong enough to handle contact he will play. He will have to play himself into "basketball shape" and build his endurance.

Here is the latest -- Oden was expecting to play Friday but the team physician will not release him to play. He feels ready and wants to play -- is practicing full speed and is not having any trouble -- but he said Thursday that he is not released to play yet and now he doesn't expect to be in action until probably December 16 vs. Cincy. I will try to pass on any changes I hear to that schedule.

It is frustrating for Greg and everybody else, but better to be safe with him.

With the scorers on this team I doubt Greg will be depended on to carry this team offensively. Defensively is where Greg is going to change the game, tremendously. He only has to be in shape and prepared metally to really make an impact defensively and on the boards. His shooting touch and flexibility in the paint will come back with time. I think our depth will allow Greg to maybe come back a few games sooner since he shouldn't have to shoot that often, other than some offensive rebounds and wide open dunks. The dunks are what I'm afraid of though.

I think he'll have a major impact on the offense by just being in the game. I don't think there are too many opposing centers that can handle him one on one; therefore, he'll be double teamed. Which should open up even more scoring opportunities for the other four. With three opposition players trying to guard four, someone will be open. Watch Cook, Lewis, Harris, Lighty, Butler, and/or Conley, etc. really light up the scoreboard when they are shooting threes basically unguarded.

I never said Oden wouldn't be a major contributor, I said he wouldn't be counted on to carry the offensive load. He will definitely make and impact if nothing else but tipping the ball back in and bringing down offensive rebounds for increased opportunities.

Oden will be a force on both ends of the court and he may not be the first option on offense every time down the court but he will get his touches inside. He is to damn good to just be ignored on the offensive end. Obviously, he will not have to carry this team offensively but I think as the season goes on he will have an increased role.

just a bump

Nothing new to report, but I just could not see letting the Big O's thread fall so far down. Cannot wait for his return, I will be interested in seeing how quickly and smoothly he meshes on the offensive end. I think that he will command double teams a lot of the time and he is a good passer out of the post, so more open threes and dunks on our other explosive players cutting to the basket.

I was a little disapointed with our inside guys not rotating to the basket when Conley drove to the basket, they did not make themselves available so he was forced to kick out for the three and when he was unable to do this, he got his shot blocked a couple of times. I think that Oden will help here as well as he is used to Conley getting by people and finding him.

:oh: :io:
