More coverage of the verbals. Basically, Matta was the key to their decision.

Funny because Illinois never really had a shot at either of them...

One thing I found interesting was in the WTHR article...we've been lead to believe for so long that Conley would most likely be making his choice and Oden would simply follow. Whether this is true or not we don't know yet, but the article says this:

Both indicated they wanted to commit before their senior season, with Oden making up his mind first, and Conley choosing to follow his teammate to Columbus, Ohio.
That to me was pretty interesting...

Here are some great tidbits of info from ExclusiveClothes on the wake board (if you don't know, EC is THE insider when it comes to knowledge of Conley/Oden)...

he wait honestly was more of the parents worried about OSU sanctions, if it was up to them especially Oden he would have committed in May.

Another weird thing is the people on peegs.com are saying almost the same thing thats being said on this board. Just change the name of Cook to Conley.

"EC, Can you confirm my suspicion that Oden never really like Wake all that much?"
- Not that much, the only reason he would go is if Conley went and I don't even believe that was a lock.

Oden wants to go to school, he has a 4.0 GPA. He doesn't even like talking in public at all much less the media hype he would get in the NBA. I think Oden stays 2 years of college.

Because he has his "friends" Conley and Cook with him. Oden doesn't want to be THE GUY to save the team or the program. He loves to be just one of the guys and can be that just fine. As long as he has his friends and family close by he will be fine.

I just got done rewatching the highlights from the Indiana Junior/Senior All-Star game. The thing that is most impressive about Conley and Oden is how methodically they play. Conley has a little shake and bake to his game, but most of what he does is dice you apart with precision and fundamentals. He does not look that quick on film but constantly beats his man using more than just speed. He uses positioning, stance, footwork, etc. to constantly get himself by his man or get an open shot. And he always seems like he is in total control. Oden on the other hand will occasionally wow you with a dunk or one of his patented blocked shots with his elbow (because that's how high off the ground he gets). But a lot of the time he is also very vanilla. He has a few things he knows will work and uses them to his advantage again and again and again. Make not mistake about it, these two can light up the scoreboard in a flash. But I think the maturity with which they play is astonishing considering they are only seniors-to-be.

Watch the films on Bucknuts if you get a chance...

from the front page of SI.com...

It's official
High school star Oden picks Ohio State

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- High school standout Greg Oden said Wednesday he will play college basketball at Ohio State.

The 7-foot Oden and Lawrence North teammate Mike Conley announced in unison during a news conference at their high school that they would both play for the Buckeyes, starting with the 2006-07 season.

Oden, the national prep player of the year, was considered a possible No. 1 pick in next year's NBA draft until the league changed its rules last week to require players to be at least one year out of high school before they can be drafted.

The verbal commitments aren't binding until the players sign letters of intent. The earliest they can do so is in November.

Oden, who has led his school to two straight Indiana high school Class 4A championships, said the NBA rule change didn't force his college choice. He chose Ohio State over Indiana, Wake Forest and Michigan State.

"It didn't really affect my decision, because I always knew I wanted to go to college," Oden said.

Oden was named national high school player of the year by USA Today, Gatorade and Parade magazine after averaging 20 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots as a junior last season.

Conley, a point guard, averaged 10.7 points and five assists.

They cited a comfort level with Ohio State coach Thad Matta in making their decision
