Oden signs endorsement deal with Nike

BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) ? Greg Oden, the 7-footer who is expected to be a top pick in the June 28 draft, has signed an endorsement deal with Nike, the shoe and apparel maker confirmed Friday.
The terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed.
Oden, who declared himself eligible for the draft after one year at Ohio State, earlier signed a three-year contract with the trading card company Topps worth at least $3 million.
After getting a late start his freshman year because of a wrist injury, Oden led the Buckeyes in scoring (15.7) and rebounding (9.6) and topped the Big Ten in shooting percentage (.616).

Oden Is Solid on and Off the Court
By LIZ ROBBINS
Published: June 27, 2007

Greg Oden held a tissue in his left hand, coughed like a truck rumbling through Times Square and graciously extended his right hand.

Greg Oden, a 19-year-old, 7-foot center, played one season at Ohio State, helping the Buckeyes to the N.C.A.A. championship game.
?Don?t worry,? he said with his mustache-stretching smile, ?I used hand sanitizer.?

Oden was looking out for others even though he was only beginning a whirlwind schedule of interviews yesterday in his first visit to New York City. The 19-year-old, 7-foot Oden is approaching tomorrow night?s N.B.A. draft ? where he is likely to be the first pick (by Portland) ? with a cold.

Oden called his one season at Ohio State ?the greatest year.? He loved being the Big Man on a campus that revolved around football, keeping him out of the spotlight until he helped lead the Buckeyes to the national championship game. Even after Florida won, Oden could not get to class without being mobbed.

?Every time I go somewhere and someone recognizes me and I?m with Mike Conley Jr.,? Oden said about his former point guard who is likely to be drafted no later than fourth, ?I?m like, ?Do they not recognize you? Is it my face? What?s going on here?? ?

Greg Oden

June 26, 2007
By DESMOND CONNER, Courant Staff Writer

The Ohio State coaches were enamored of Greg Oden the person during a recruiting visit to Columbus. There was a football game that weekend and because it was an unofficial visit, Oden had to pay much of the cost. He did pass through tailgaters outside Ohio Stadium, met folks, saw the game and, apparently, had a good time.

"It's not unusual for us to get letters from parents after visits just thanking you for everything during the visit," said John Groce, the Buckeyes' associate head coach. "But Greg himself sends us a note afterward and I believe it said something like, `Thank you, I really appreciated the time we spent together.' ... That's when we all kind of looked around and said, this is some kind of person."

As if there was ever any doubt, I would still like to congratulate Greg on this tremendous achievement. On PTI the other day, he only wished that he would be taken in the first round. Let me know if you can come up with a bigger understatement. Greg Oden, my friend, you are THE MAN!!! Go Greg, and Go Bucks!!!

Rob Oller commentary: Oden's size wins out in tale of two talents

As the NBA prepares to wheel out its draft-day dessert cart, only two choices put my salivary glands on high alert.

Greg Oden and Kevin Durant. Oden or Durant? It's like trying to choose between the Dutch apple pie and New York-style cheesecake.
The draft in New York tonight is the deepest in a decade, but as effective as Ohio State's Mike Conley Jr. and Florida's Al Horford likely will become, they're not in the same category as Oden-Durant.
