C Austin Parks (Official Thread)

247Sports lists Parks as the No. 18 center in the nation and the No. 6 prospect from Ohio. ESPN ranks him as a four-star prospect.

"Being a kid from Ohio, having them want you to play for their school, I feel really honored," he said of the Buckeyes. "Every time I went there they always made me feel like a priority, saying how they would use me and use me in the right way. I’ve done research and watched games and they do use their bigs the way that I could be used to help them win some games."

Ohio State offered Parks a scholarship during the early summer after a sophomore season that saw him earn second-team All-WBL honors as the Roughriders went 16-7 overall. Ohio and Toledo were his first scholarship offers, but Ohio State, Indiana, West Virginia, Michigan State, Dayton and Illinois, among others, all followed suit in June.

Assistant coach Jake Diebler has been Parks’ primary recruiter.

It’s not yet known how big Ohio State’s 2023 class will become.

Knee injury keeps OSU verbal Parks out of team camp but he should be back soon

Ohio State men’s basketball verbal commitment Austin Parks had hoped to join his St. Marys (Ohio) Memorial teammates and play at OSU’s team camp. But a knee injury kept Parks on the sideline.

The injury could keep Parks out of action for four to six weeks, meaning he could miss one or more of the travel ball weekends scheduled in July.

Q&A WITH AUSTIN PARKS

Parks spent a few moments with reporters at the OSU team camp. Here are excerpts from his interview session.

Q: What is the nature of your injury?

Parks: “It’s just a stress fracture in my knee. I will be good in five weeks and will be running in four.”

Q: To be here as a commit, does it feel different?

Parks: “It is my home now. I feel comfortable walking around and I know where everything is at. The guys are here now. It’s pretty cool to know this is where I will be.”

Q: How have things changed since you committed?

Parks: “I get to focus on one thing and that one thing is playing basketball. I only have to focus on one school. I don’t have to go around and talk to all of the other coaches and think about making a big decision. It’s done and over with. I can relax and just focus on getting better. It took a lot of pressure off of me.”

Q: Have you talked much with George Washington III? What kind of relationship have you been able to build with him?

Parks: “We see each other all the time at AAU tournaments. We always talk about when we come down here and work out together and when we can get a few shots up. We’re getting to know each other a lot more.”

Q: The All-Ohio guys like Dailyn Swain have talked about trying to bring you on for July. You have the knee situation right now. Is that something you’ve thought about?

Parks: “It is cool that these guys who are getting recruited by the same school I’m going to, I could play with these guys and get to know them a little bit more.”

Q: How do you view yourself in terms of a position? There has been more of a push toward versatility and less usage of the traditional center. How do you see that working out?

Parks: “I know what I have to do. I won’t be out there being a point guard. I do have to get better at all of these other abilities like ball handling and shooting and all of these other things. I know I have to be the big guy. I’ve watched plenty of college basketball and NBA. I’ve watched all of these great centers. I try to follow what they do.”

“I feel like me and Felix would be a good frontcourt and all that. I’m ready to play with him, and just the versatility between me and him, It’s gonna be scary. … I feel like we’re two different players, but we work together really well,” Parks said.

Parks said he hadn’t spoken much to junior center Zed Key prior to his visit to Ohio State camp, but loves to watch him play and admires his work ethic most of all. Parks said the effort Key gives on every play is a template for “how I need to be” at the college level.

Parks’ injury, a stress fracture in the knee, sounds more concerning than the rising high school senior seems to be about it. Parks said the issue will only keep him out for a little over a month in total, and that he may even return to play in a tournament at the end of July.

“It feels fine, honestly. It’s just a cracked bone. It’s just a stress fracture in my knee,” Parks said. “I’ll be good in five weeks and I’ll be running in four. … It’s good to sit back and take it in. It’s really a good chance for my teammates to go out and prove themselves. Without me playing they get to step up and take a bigger role, which is good for them when the season rolls around.”

Missed this commit, but seems to be the type of center we have been clamoring for that would indeed pair with Okpara like a high-end cabernet goes with a filet mignon. Use a different metaphor if you would like, but great pickup and hopefully our frontcourt looks solid with Parks in the fold.
