Buying Phones Off Contract

So apparently there's a glitch in BB's system that would allow me to get a phone at the 2 year contract price and allow me to kepe unlimited data

There's an option that says keep same data plan, and when you get the phone you use your old sim card instead of the new one, and contract will be extended and still have unlimited

Ting is a pretty good option for anyone looking for a cheaper cell phone bill and they don't have the need to upgrade their phone every year. If you have a smart phone, many models you can bring with you to Ting without costing you a penny. They don't offer phones at all, so you basically either buy one up front from their store, or you bring your existing one with you.

Ting is no contract, only pay for what you use deal. If you only use 700 minutes one month and 100 texts you get charged $20 for the minutes and $3 for the texts. If your minutes go up to 1200 the next month you'll get bumped up from $20 to something like $28 for the minutes, but only for that month. I've got my wife and I on Ting, and between the two of us our last phone bill was only $60 for 2038 minutes (She's got a lot of sisters), 403 texts, and I think 150 mb of data. That's a pretty good deal. Both of us had older phones though, so I had to pickup a couple Galaxy S3 phones online for a couple hundred, but we've cut our phone bill in half by going to Ting, so the phones will pay for themselves in a matter of months.

The only downside to Ting is it utilizes the Sprint network. Sprint's network isn't quite as nice as Verizon or AT&T's, but it gets the job done. Now, if I could get my wife to use the VOIP feature and cut those 2000 minutes down, our cell phone bill would only be about $20 total!

I always find it interesting that companies are willing to give better deals to non customers to woooo them as opposed to loyal existing customers to reward them for being a customer. Case in point if you are new family of 4 to Verizon or ATT you can get an amazing deal that includes 10 gb of shared data and unlimited talk and text for $160 a month. That same deal for a current Verizon customer is well over $200 a month. We have 3 lines with 2 of them being smartphones and to share 4 gb of data is $180 a month.

Yep. Similar situation just happened to me with Xfinity/Comcast. I went online to try and upgrade my equipment to the new platform, but no offers for what I currently have, but for only $25 more a month blah blah blah. Online sales guy was no help. Said "There are no packages like you currently have that carry the X1 platform in your area, you would have to upgrade for only........" Bullshit, it is nothing more than an equipment change. I don't want a home phone number and don't want to rent your shitty modem for $8/mo when the one I own works just fine. I only want TV and internet service, and one DVR box. That's it. I have been with them since moving down here, but the new guy is apparently more valuable than me.

Yeah, the communications business is AWFUL these days. Theres absolutely no incentive to stay with a carrier/provider. It's not like they will offer you better deals the longer you stay with them. You get a promotional offer for maybe a year, or you get a free phone, and then in a year you pay out the ass for as long as you're part of that company. They've completely bought into the idea that it's harder to establish newer customers than to hold onto old ones, so they forget about the people currently paying their paychecks. I had the same experience with AT&T that buxfan had with Xfinity. I had been with AT&T on my wireless since...probably 2001. I actually started with Cingular before they were bought out, and then stuck with AT&T.

So, in 2011 the wife and I tried to get phones with AT&T jointly. I tried to add her to my current plan (Which was updated in 2008, so I wasn't still under 2001's rates) by just adding a device, but a store rep said it wasn't possible because I had a "Grandfather" plan that they didn't even offer anymore. The cheapest plan I could get for the two of us was something like $30 more than I had been paying, not counting the additional device charges. I pointed out how long I'd been a customer, pointed to a better promotional offer they offer new customers, and why I don't just cancel my contract (Contract period had been up) and start over as a new customer? The sales rep said he couldn't advise that. So, thats when I just nixed the whole thing and went with Ting. Just stupid business practices...
