Game Thread Buffalo Bulls at tOSU, Aug 31, 12 ET, ESPN2

2. Braxton has an annoying (and dangerous) habit of giving up ground when the pocket breaks down, which often leads to huge negative plays. He got away with one in the third quarter when he was sacked and fumbled at the two-yard line, but the play was negated by a personal foul on the Buffalo defense (Khalil Mack with hands to the face).

This play concerned me. At first I thought it was luck, Braxton fumbled, and then we got lucky with a penalty. Then I saw the replay for the second or third time, and noticed one important thing. The guys who forced the fumble and put on the huge pressure was the one that committed the penalty. He only got past the lineman that was blocking because he pushed on his facemask. Had the penalty not been committed, the likely fumble wouldn't have happened. Though there is a good chance there would have been a sack. I am looking for a replay, but can't seem to find one.

I rewatched the game on DVR today. It was Mack pretty much face masked the center out of the way.

They said on the radio that he didn't play his senior year because of an injury. I think knee problem or broken leg was the injury and he flew under the radar because of that...

I wonder how many tackles he would have had his senior year if he didn't have the knee/leg injury?

"Mack attended Fort Pierce Westwood High School in Fort Pierce, Florida. Mack had 140 tackles, including eight for a loss and nine sacks his senior year. He was named third-team All-State in Florida, as well as first-team All-Area, and helped lead the Panthers to a district championship.

Rated as only a two-star recruit by Rivals.com, his only scholarship offer came from Buffalo, which he accepted."

I'm going back and rereading what I missed on gameday, and noticed this ...

Won't lie, I hadn't heard of Mack until @vrbryant wrote him up in 4sight. Kid is a beast.

Post #116 from Tuesday, C-Dog...

Urban is already talking up Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. McShay gives Mack a mid-second round grade. Given the absence of any conversation with Buffalo/MAC fans, sounds like Mack is by far their best player.

Granted - however in talking with my brother after the game as he was both on field level and up in the upper deck, he said the difference was very noticeable even within the stadium. Add in being amped up to play and going at game speed, the younger guys especially were having issues. Brax and Shazier will be fine going forward I think.

After the All-Access special last fall and the way Brax went down in The Game in 34 degree weather, he's clearly got issues chugging a Gatorade. As for Shazier, there aren't many places to store water when you've got 4% body fat. Maybe it's time to get him on the pickle juice with extra salt and sugar.

So funny. During crampfest '13, I was sitting with another lacrosse coach and our kids at a BW3s out here and we totally discussed them having a couple gallons of pickle juice on the sidelines for the next game.

Yep - makes me think there's a body chemistry thing going on with Brax or perhaps he's a little too heavy for what he's trying to do. Anyway, if you cramp up every game your usefulness dwindles quickly.

Interesting and insightful comments and view points in this thread.

My take?

It was a pretty darned good scrimmage game that highlighted some areas to improve on and build up. This IS why we schedule the Little Sisters of the Poor early on, after all. I honestly didn't expect 60 or 70 points from the Bucks since there were so many new wrinkles they needed to work on.

I WAS disappointed that The Bullets allowed 20, but again this was a scrimmage and the youngsters were getting their feet wet. The future looks bright.

SD State should show some more improvement and then bring on Cal.

Put Dontre on kick returns! The lad has some wheels.

I wouldn't say the Silver Bullets allowed 20, as 7 was on the offense when Mewhort completely whiffed on a cut block of Mack and Braxon threw the ball right to him on a tunnel screen. Another 7 came on a short field off a turnover that probably is not a TD with Roby and CJ on the field.

It will be interesting to hear Urb's presser on Monday afternoon. If Mewhort executes his cut block on Mack, at that time, Wilson would have clear sailing. I agree with so many others in this thread. It was a good game for us to straighten out all the kinks and quirks that were visible. I hope our defense shows much improvement before the trip out to Berkley and the Bears.
