Buckeyes' Post-Texas Poll Rankings (merged)

At this point, we are talking about "backing in" to the NC game. I think that we should postpone any talk of an NC until the Bucks win their remaining games; if Ohio State goes 10-1, and there are fewer than two undefeated teams, then maybe we can NC talk again.

Winning out wouldn't be "backing into" the NC game. It would be us going out and playing excellent football and taking advantage of an opportunity if it comes our way. Backing into a game is what happens when an Oklahoma loses two games and gets awarded a trip any way. The goal is still the same, the road is just a bit longer now.

FWIW, Oklahoma lost only one game - the Big 12 title game to Kansas State in 2003 - before dropping the BSC NC game to LSU and finishing 11-2.

In any event, the Bucks are relying on others to lose when they could've simply taken care of their own business.

Lord - You do make a point. Let me just throw ONE last food for thouyght out there:

USC looses twice this year, OSU goes on to be 10-1 outright Big10 Champs, Texas has a loss and say VaTech runs their table with a sole loss. All are ranked top 5. Since Texas has beat us, and they play "VaTech" while we play "USC" and Texas beats "VaTech" while we handle "USC". Could we make a STRONG point for a National Champ this year still seeing has how both teams had losses (our to a higher ranked squad)?

It depends on when Va Tech takes their loss. If it happens late in the season they drop behind us without a chance to climb back into the picture. If you take a loss it must be in the early part of the season or you are sunk, with the exception of Oklahoma a couple of years ago.

Hey, an NC is definitely possible, but the Bucks still have a lot of work to do (win 9 in a row, with a few testers along the way), and then still hope that a few other teams stumble. I'll start thinking NC again around week 9 or 10, if the Bucks still have only a close loss to Texas to tarnish their season.

Yes they should have, but this isn't like Michigan State in 1998. We lost to the second ranked team in the land, there is no shame in that. The fact that it was such a hard fought game that we dominated a huge portion of further demonstrates that we are among the elite in college football. In this game the bounces did not go our way, it happens. We have an outstanding team that with a little luck will play in the Rose Bowl this year.

I am not sure any of the teams left on our schedule are up to the task. Michigan looks putrid on defense, Iowa is over rated and Minnesota is beatable. I think it will come down to what it always comes down too: beating Scum.

I would like to think no lower than #6:

1. USC
2. Texas
3. LSU
4. Virginia Tech
5. Tennessee
6. Ohio State
Etc.

...but more likely #9 or lower:

1. USC
2. Texas
3. LSU
4. Virginia Tech
5. Tennessee
6. Florida
7. Georgia
8. Florida State
9. Ohio State
Etc.

Losses by USC and or Texas won't help too much.

Remember two years ago? Oklahomo lost their last two games, and still played for the championship. And worse, they finished the season ranked 3rd even with back to back loses.

If the Prophylactics lose, they will still be a top three team. If Texas loses, they won't drop behind us, simply because they beat us. Besides other things having to happen (is that English?) either USC or Texas would have to lose twice.

I think the bigger question is: should prophylactics be capitalized?

First, the larger question: No. I don't think prophylactics should be capitalized.
Second, Oklahoma lost their last game (the Big XII title game meltdown to K-State) and played in the Sugar Bowl two years ago. They didn't have two losses going into the BCS title game. They had one. Of course, they had two by the time LSU was done with them. You know, I think if SoCal loses, they (USC) are not necessarily a top three team. I mean, if they lost, it would have to be to a Pac 10 team, which does not have anyone in the top 10. (Cal is at 16 or so) Possible stumbling blocks for them are ND or Cal. But I doubt they lose to either. In the event of a loss, I think they would fall out of the top 5, actually. However, I think you make a better point about Texas not sliding past Ohio State with one loss.
